- With over 40 years’ worth of material to sift through, if you’re someone new to the world of Gundam, it’s a fair question to ask, “Where the hell do I even begin?”. Thankfully, this video is here to explain how, and more importantly why, you should try getting into Gundam.

That's something I think Evangelion did really well, despite its lack of focus on robot-fighting; the EVAs looked both terrifying and yet sleek & cool with great colour palletes
Even though I loathe Evangelion, I'm all for more unique mech designs. I just don't like those of EVA because of their super thin, lanky bodies and their sneakers. That said, it's true that they did colors right. Nice amount in nice proportions across the chassis.
@@BeeWaifu Being fair, they're not mechs, they're giant creatures in suits of "armor" and boots
Yaa I totally agree it’s a good show and the EVAS are rly cool and the way that they are controlled is rly interesting as well
@@BeeWaifu the 3 main characters and their attitudes were huge turn off for me, I was 5 eps away from completing and I couldn't take it anymore so I just stopped watching it and instead went on to watch Ghost In The Shell and Giant Robo
@@cartoonworld1000 As you should have.
It makes perfect sense that the war machines of gundam are both cool and terrifying. An that they're coveted and sold as model kits. That's literally what happens with real world war machines.
True
We have a decent sized hobby shop near my home. There is an entire aisle for Gunpla. However, there are two aisles filled with warships, tanks, and fighter jets.
Yeah but weapons of real war aren't designed with the intent to sell toys to children. The gundams are. That's where the strange dichotomy lies.
Already a Gundam fan, but I just wanted to say this is the absolute best of these "where to begin Gundam" videos I have seen, especially with such an unusual recommandation.
Thanks, glad to hear it.
"Gundam is really good at naming stuff"
Gundam Death scythe Hell Custom: Am I a joke to you?
The traditional method of getting into Gundam for the first time is falling into the cockpit
I think that there’s two ways to get into Gundam:
1. The best/most effective way
2. The easy/accessible way
Either way is completely valid depending on your experience with the mecha genre or your willingness to overlook dated visuals. For the the best way, it’s pretty obviously Mobile Suit Gundam 0079. That series is one of the classic anime of the 20th century that is super important for anime in general, and you hit two birds with one stone. And it’s still an entertaining show to this day, and it just makes everything else click into place as it explains the world really well, and there’s obvious next steps for the franchise.
For the easy way, it’s one of the AU series which helps you get your foothold in the mecha genre before knowing of the Gundam franchise is for you. For this option there is a couple of series, the big ones being 00 and Iron Blooded orphans, but Wing and Seed have their fans, but come less recommended.
I actually have not seen F91, because I’m relatively new to the franchise, but it does seem like an odd choice considering it seems to have similar problems to the 0079 compilation movies from what I can tell. I think that the compilation movies are adequate if you here about how good Zeta is and want to jump into that, but I generally prefer the series to the movies and find it more enjoyable.
Gundam is a franchise I do plan to check out when I have the chance, but since I normally don't like my entertainment TOO violent and there is FAR more Gundam content than I can possibly analyze all at once, and that there's so many other franchises I already like and will get into in the future, I think I will just watch a few Gundam shows and movies, and this is one of them! I also plan to watch the original 1979 TV series, the Gundam Wing series that aired on Toonami (in my country at least) and... I will see what else there is and decide what I shall and shall not watch. I hear Gundam Seed Destiny is bad, so I likely won't watch that one, yet I hear its GBA game is good! If an existing franchise has more content than (at least seemingly) you can watch in your lifetime, it can be hard to decide how to get into it. Had I watched the 4kids dub of One Piece back in the day, as bad as that is, I probably would've saved the time it'd take me to watch the story all over again when the Funimation dub arrived, just starting where the 4kids dub left off!
Being a child of the 90s, I’ll always have a soft spot for gundam wing and G gundam, despite how different it is from the rest of the series 😂
G Gundam is straight-up built different lol.
Same
G Gundam even named as mobile fighter. Not as mobile suit like the rest of gundam tales
I love F91, it's really the only self-contained movie in the series except the compilation movies of 0083 and 08th MS Team. However, I think part of my enjoyment came from having watched all the previous entries in the series. F91 feels like the original series, Zeta, ZZ, and maybe Char's Counterattack mixed together, and watching those series first helps you "fill in the gaps" as it were, since F91 can be a bit confusing. In other words, watching those previous series will introduce you to tropes and ideas that F91 reuses and helps to understand the movie better. Heck, Seabook is like Amuro, Kamille, and Judeau rolled into one. It's a rewarding experience.
Oh, F91 isn't a 13 episodes series squished into a 2 hour movie, it's a ~50 episode series squished into a 2 hour movie...
Hathaway is cool, but I'm honestly more excited for what comes after with the UC next 100 project.
I think After War Gundam X is also a good recommendation, at least for anyone that likes 90s adventure anime.
My first introduction was Gundam Wing, and while I have not kept up over the years, it's still one of he best to me
ALWAYS wanted to get into gundam. Great video ! Thank you for making this
Glad you enjoyed it.
I knew there was a reason I'm irrationally afraid of novelty-sized bullet casings!
Outstanding video, made bitterly tragic by the fact this film isn't available to purchase in the UK :(

Piracy is morally justifiable if you cannot legally access the product in your region.
@@SelectScreen Speaking of that particular scene, it would be a hilarious example of the juxtaposition between "cool anime mecha" and "literal horrors of war" if they sold a Gunpla diorama of it.
At 46 years old, last Christmas I received my first Gunpla. Two months later I am currently building my 8th Gunpla and I am a few episodes into Double Zeta. I have a long way to go, but I jumped in head first and plan on diving deeper every single day.
Too bad F91 isn't available to stream ANYWHERE!!!
I thought this was going to be a video showcasing various ways of getting into the cockpit of mobile suits.
If someone would like to build me a mobile suit so I can do the proper research, I'd be more than happy to make that video.
Step 1: Watch Gundam
Step 2: Be hooked for life
When they signed Tomino and his crew to create toy advertisment series i bet they didn't expect he will bring them an epic space opera.
I started my love of Gundam with GundamWing. Been hooked ever since.
Gundam The Origin is what the SW Prequels should have been. Near perfect origin/backstory of the main antagonsit.
Nope I disagree because it changes Char's characterization too much for me. This guy is responsible for setting into motion everything in UC? It's a nice alternate story but cannot replace the mainline universe.imo
Honestly Clone Wars is what the Star Wars prequels should have been, which is great because it’s canon to the movies.
@@thomasffrench3639 That was a major disapointment that the Clone Wars started at the end of Episode2 and was almost finished at the beginning of Episode3. If it is was so important for the story why it wasn't in the movies? Why George? We should have been in the Clone Wars already at the begining of Episode1.
@@Grift76600 well the prequels should’ve just been a tv series

Never Forget: Mechs don't need legs in space.
Would you do a video on BlueGender?
Unfortunately, I haven't watched it, so not sure if I'd have anything meaningful to say. I'll add it to the list of anime to watch, but shamefully that list is very long, so it might not be any time soon.
@@SelectScreen quick question is Mobile Suit Gundam origin and Mobile Suit Gundam (Universal Century) the same thing?!!?
Yes, Origin is canonically the first thing in the Universal Century Timeline continuity, although it was made over 3 decades after the franchise began. As you could probably guess from the video, I personally wouldn't suggest starting there, but as you can also see from many of the comments, people have very differing opinions on that question as well.
@@SelectScreen to understand GUNDAM fully do I need to read the manga...
Great video. In my opinion, Iron-Blooded Orphan I feel is the best way to get into Gundam. I've tried watching so many other Gundam series, but IBO I felt was the most interesting. I have even gotten my friends into Gundam because of it.
I believe it. I've never really been able to get into IBO, but it makes sense that a Gundam show that strays away from your typical UC-style setting and story would have appeal for different kinds of viewers. So, still glad it exists even if it isn't really to my taste.
Ibo is the best spin off Gundam. It was a masterpiece to me. Tekkadan downfall was sad
Should i not start with thunderbolt
@@Ankushdas2001 You can, it's absolutely amazing but only 2 movie-length episodes. Its only issue is that it's incomplete, but amazing nonetheless.

Hey, great video!
I'm currently watching the '79 series and I think I'm going to go through the list at 5:19, including your recommendation. I ordered my first gunpla, too, I'm excited to get into the series, thanks again. :)
You love to hear it.
hope it went well. building my first gunpla and watching 08th MS. wanted to see what else i should watch.
Went pretty good, I've built 4 now. lol I marathoned a lot of series, and I highly recommend '79, Zeta, Char's Counter Attack, and Unicorn was pretty good, too. I think my favorite was War In the Pocket.
Can't say I liked Wing, sadly.
@@AegisREDflector have u seen Thunderbolt yet? U should check it out they're great movies
@@AegisREDflector I also didn't like wing, I'm not sure why tho. I'm much more of a fan of Amuro's story I guess
I've just watched Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterstrike, and I have no idea what happened at all, but there was a hell of alot of explosions. Which was cool.
I remember watching gundam back in the turn of the century on toonami. It was awesome, totally got hooked, ended up playing online in rpg chat rooms on AOL. Lmao the good ole days
that explained why f91 felt like a whole season worth of story
Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket is the best Gundam serie.
I’ve been trying to get into anime, and figured I would like gundam. Currently watching “Mobile Suit Gundam 00” because I read a Reddit post that said it was a good starting point. I like it so far, but I’ll definitely check out F91 next. Thanks!
Sorry if this has already been answered but what is that song after the intro, between 2:18 to about 3:00 I love that sort of industrial/shoegaze sound, reminds me of silent hill.

followed this 2 years ago. now ive completed the UC, RC, FC, AW, CE, PD, and starting on the 00 timelines! I am alsk currently reading and playing through gems like Zeonic Front, Crossbone, Sentinel, F90 Fastest Formula, and MSV-R! This WORKS!
Somewhere in October I have a hyperfixation on Mecha and robots because I want to draw some soon. So I saw Gundam and I got interest in it and I want to get into it and your video is very helpful on that. Also I played Gundam versus beta years ago and I enjoyed it I was played it with my friends and we had fun.
I have to admit, you make this franchise sound pretty appealing.
I think you got confused at around 15:09. The Vanguard are definitely the good guys.
I've watched a lot of gundam and I've built a lot more kits but this video was still very well made. I just have to say I think the compilation movies for the first series is better because of the filler cut and the improved animation
for some reason i am fondest of V-Gundam. It may have been the first series i ever fully watched.
F91 is a guilty pleasure Gundam title for me
I would recommend watching Gundam '79 or Gundam 00
43 isn't that bad. It's literally the equivalent of around 20 episodes of a live action drama show. It's shorter than the entirety of Stranger things.
The thing is that most live action dramas tend to be more engaging, as the original Gundam series are a bit slower paced compared to modern shows. These shows were designed for weekly series instead of being dropped at once
YOURE SOO UNDERRATED!!!!
Erupting burning finger, nuff said.
I thought this was a tutorial on how to get into the actual mech itself
Here's the thing though the compilation movies are very improved in terms of animation and plot movement I would say as a starter show the 08th MS team is the best despite my start with 00. It is UC during the 1 year war. Great animation and plot not too long not too short and quite frankly awesome
I would personally not do F91 but that's just my opinion
Exactly
Only the third compilation movie, Encounters in Space has significantly improved animation, the first two mostly just reanimate the worst-looking shots from the TV series.
I Recently got into Gundam because my buddy told me to watch gundam IBO and it was amazing definitely should watch if you want to get into gundam then after watch gundam 00
Gundam 00 and 0079 are the best starting places.
F91 was actually the first Gundam I saw, on a fansubbed VHS back in the mid-late 90s… and it left me completely cold. I also tried some of 0083 and 08th MS Team, and wasn’t into them either. It was Wing that made me into a Gundam fan (although I did eventually try 08MST again and liked it the second time around)
I started with SEED and got back into it with IBO.
I first heard of gundam when I was a kid I played dynasty warriors gundam 2 after getting it for like 10$ at GameStop and now 5 years later I’m just learning that it was a show before a game
This is a very well presented video and I like the formatting; definitely going to check out more videos :D
I like Gundam Seed. The second series of Seed: Destiny, not so much, but Seed was good. It was my gateway series, and it is good for being an origin story, excellent animations, and none of that psychic stuff I hear is in other series have.
Seed is good, but it has problems baked into it; the slow pace and slowly changing status quo makes it a little rough, but when Seed hits its stride, it's one of the better non-UC shows.
I just recently got into Gundam and SEED was also the first one I watched. I watched a couple episodes of Destiny, but wasn’t impressed. Right now I’m watching 00.
F-91 Was my first introduction to the Gundam Universe, back in 1991.
I thought that mobile suit Gundam was made in 2000s so I watched the 1st episode and holy was the artstyle and the animation sooooo outdated so I checked the release date of it and found out it was made in 1979 HOLY THIS SHOW IS SO OLD
i would just watch the origin first its the litteral start of UC and has sick animations a good story and most importantly sets you up to understand why char does what he does its the perfect start and lets not talk about the point that the origin explains slowly and steady why zeon does the things it does the perfect start into gundam xD
Yo the whole time you were doing your intro I’m thinking F91 would be a great entry point, then you said it and I was like omg I agree!
how crazy you'd say that, since F91 was the FIRST model kit series i started building back when they first appeared in Hungates in the USA.

Even if G Gundam was my first series, my first completed Gundam experience is F91 (also, I like Cecile's drip)
I think I picked the wrong time to try and get into gundam. After 2020, I am so tired of politics and death and from what I've seen. Those are the bread and butter of this series.
Well, fwiw there are definitely people who would tell you I'm thinking way to hard about Gundam and that it's just big robots having cool robot fights. But yeah... in my own personal opinion, I wouldn't say Gundam is really all that subtle about it's politics, so if you're not in the right headspace for that, might be worth coming back to it later.
it's much less political than the video lets on. it gets preachy sometimes but that's either because 1) treize from wing is unfortunately only able to preach truth, but also 2) it's a show to show and not just tell children that war sucks, but it's also to sell toys so they gotta make it look cool
@@epy0nkaru it’s one the most political media I’ve seen, so it’s completely fair to not want to watch it because of politics.
Try g Gundam at lot less of the politics
The series I’m most familiar with is the Gundam series with the Shuffle Alliance. While I only saw a couple of episodes, I remember seeing it airing on Toonami when I was growing up
Thanks for the video…just a tip: if you read a script make the text size smaller, it won’t make your eyes flicker across the words so rapidly
I watched Gundam F91 and Gundam Seed when I was a teenager in Nigeria 14 years ago.
As long as you don't try to tell me Hong Kong Phooey was geared toward kids we'll be ok!

I've gotten my girlfriend in through Origin, and then 08th MS Team and 0083 while I kinda explained the OYW and then CCA. Edit: Also, you look kind of like a serial killer from the 70's, thats pretty neat!
I luckily perchance saw a mecha gaikotsu video on gunpla and I though they looked so cool, I bought MG Exia (still my favorite kit btw) then watched 00 to completion.
That's how I got into Gundam
Is the gundam manga a good place to start?
Great video man. Thanks
Great video, great song, what’s the track used at 2:18?
My first introduction to Gundam was Stardust Memory. Then I watched the 08th MS Brigade, then After War Gundam X, then War In The Pocket, and then the 0079 Series, and then Turn A Gundam.
Me too. I have yet to watch the original Gundam.
I started the 1970s series, then watched the compilation films.
i remember watching g gundam on toonami in random order and being so confused as a adult i got back into gundam and started with the gundam movies 1 -3 and then i watched chars counter attack. I was super confused because of the time gap i didnt know anything about zeta or double zeta i was used to seeing the gundam and then the nu gundam shows up blew my mind lol didnt even know how much time passed in between the movies i should of looked up a order of the series for sure 😂
0:33 so now you tell me! I finished the third movie like 10 minutes ago I’m burnt out
I couldn't find the full series anywhere, so I just settled with the compilation movies, I thought they were pretty good, are they a decent enough substitute?
Edit: I watched a different timeline video and started with F91 because it was pretty detatched, then I watched the compilations and will probably watch 08th MS after
So what to watch after that?
Maybe thats why i found Gundam 00 easier to get into. Because the main character Setsuna isn't scared of Killing from episode 1. Which i guess makes him the Gundam Series Oddball MC. XD
Gundam 00 is also to this day the only Gundam series i could get into at all. And that's after 4 attempts based on fans recommendations.
I don't think Gundam is up my alley, personally, but thanks for an interesting video!
Cool man, honestly the way this video is he's setting it up like it's a massively complicated story. While yes it is complicated, this is also the universal timeline. Gundam has single shows that are full stories in themselves that you can just watch in whatever order. Like you can watch Gundam Seed by itself, you don't need to have seen anything before that to enjoy it.
Hi I'm new to gundam
And I really wanna watch for sawanos music cant someone pls give me a watch order..
Do I need to start from the 1980s anime ?
Sawano’s music huh, In that case the series and movies with his music are Unicorn, Narrative and Hathaway, which are unfortunately a good bit down the line of the main UC timeline so you’ve got a bit of watching to do.
Here’s the main timeline:
Original series (or three compilation movies) > Zeta > ZZ (double zeta) > Char’s Counterattack > Unicorn > Narrative > Hathaway. From then on you can go on to F91 and Victory.
As of writing this, Netflix currently has the three original compilation movies, Char’s counterattack Unicorn and Hathaway. This of course depends on your region. You’ll miss out on Zeta and ZZ but you can probably understand whats going on with what’s there.
You could start with Unicorn straight away and work your way back, like I did, but it’s probably a better experience if you go chronologically
@@Jc88500 appreciate this
The first Gundam *anything* I watched from start to finish was actually SD Gundam Force. I'm not afraid to admit that, because I really appreciated how much fun it was. However the first real Gundam show I watched was Wing, during College. But my favorite show, full stop is Gundam 00.
Look me in the damn eye when talking about gundam
He probably reading the script
I'm trying to get into Gundam and while this video has been really helpful in figuring out where to start, it's still difficult due to how limited and overpriced the dvds and blu rays of gundam are here in the UK. As far as I know, there are no official versions of F91, 0080, or 08th MS available in the UK, so I've had to resort to buying bootleg versions as my only way of watching them which isn't the most convenient. I've heard there's some Gundam stuff on Netflix? But idk if it's worth the monthly subscription.
Sunrise, why do you have to be so difficult?
You're very true. There is occasionally some stuff you can watch for free on the official Gundam TH-cam channel, but I don't think they currently have anything I mentioned in the video. It's a problem Gundam fans around the world have had for years, and really the only surefire way of getting around this is "pirating", which you certainly won't find me scolding anyone about if that's what they decided to do.
I'm not in the UK but I'm in Ireland so the same rules apply. It seems the only official releases we have are the single series like Seed and Wing. Netflix has Iron blooded orphans and Unicorn, that's it so far. What you could do is stream them for free on crunchyroll with ads but they don't have any of the universal timeline other than The Origin. Still a really easy way to watch, G gundam, Wing, Seed, Seed destiny, unicorn (I believe), 00, iron blooded orphans and a few more.
Hulu has Iron Blooded Orphans, Unicorn, Seed Remastered, 00, The Originals, 08th, Wing, and maybe 1 or 2 more. Not sure if that changes based on region, but that's what I've got access to in the US.
First series I watched was IBO, hard to see anything topping that
I may be late so you probebly wont see this but from what ive remembered it was toonamis gundam wing that brought in new people during the time. so wouldnt gundam wing itself be a good starting point for new comers in our current time as well?
No you're definitely right, Gundam Wing airing on Toonami was probably the biggest spike in Gundam fandom outside of Japan there's ever been (I mean that's how I first saw Gundam). But as a show, I don't think it's as good as the original, and while you can still enjoy it on it's own, Gundam Wing is in it's own way, sort of a riff on all the Gundam that came before it. So I still stand by watching the original series is better, or F91 if you're short on time and just want a free taste test.
How do you get in gundam? It s easy!

I have to mention that ORIGIN the OVA *is not* part of the main UC timeline. It's a UC spin-off that Sunrise tried to turn into a prequel; the ORIGIN manga is just an alternate retelling of 0079.
