I came here from the Rizz show. Subscribed and gained 10lbs, credit score dropped, and wife left with the dog. But at least I know who the best thrash guitarists are!
Dave is probably the best, but my personal favourite is Skolnik of Testament. The way he writes melodies and really makes the guitar sing really rivals the virtuoso guitarists in the glam scene (Like George Lynch, Malmsteen and co.). Though that can also be said about Dave and a few of his hired guitar players as well like Marty Friedman and Chris Poland. Overkill are my personal favourite thrash band, so maybe I should suggest Bobby Gustavson or Dave Linsk, however none of the hired guitarists of overkill have really remained that much and gotten "legend status". Overkill's had a very revolving door of guitar players, so not much to pick there despite their picks being really good picks. They were mainly about Bobby Ellsworth and Verni as a band.
Rob Cavestany, Reece Scruggs, Jeff Waters, and Eric Peterson all deserve a shout out. I also really love the guitar work in Vektor but I have no idea who is playing what.
This gonna be a good one...even tho he was rhythm I always felt Scott Ian was underrated even as respected and regarded as he is bc anthrax wasn't one of the other big 4 bands...just my opinion
100% agree with Mustaine being the best. Saw Megadeth live last year, and the dude's playing is still absolutely unreal. That being said, I definitely feel like Marty is worthy of mention as well.
Finally someone gives recognition for the thrash master, he has had so many good guitar players in his band and he knows the genre! You gained another subscriber today!
DAVE MUSTAINE ABSOLUTELY SUCKS FUCKING BALLS AND MEGADEATH IS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST FUCKING BAND ON THE PLANET THE TWO GREATEST THRASH GUITARIST OF ALL TIME WILL ALWAYS BE JAMES HETFIELD AND AN KIRK HAMMETT AND METALLICA WILL ALWAYS BE THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST BAND ON THE FUCKING PLANET. IF IT WAS NOT FOR METALLICA MEGADEATH WOULD NOT EVEN BE A BAND
Kreator is slowly becoming one of those bands I'm kicking myself for not discovering earlier. Hell same with Testament and Exodus. Great riffs from all of these bands.
Not really thrash, but I think Lenny Rutledge from Sanctuary has to be given credit for what he did, at least in terms of songwriting. Of course, vocalist Warrel Dane was the actual driving force when he was still alive, but they were a great combo with Lenny. And after all, it was Dave Mustaine, who discovered Sanctuary and even produced their first album. Mixed it badly, true, but Sanctuary and Megadeth - as well as Nevermore, Sanctuary's descendant band - were going together for a while and it is to note that he found them. If Dave Mustaine works with a certain musician, he definitely is a good one. Rutledge is no exception.
I kinda want to say James Hetfield, even if he’s the rhythm guitarist. Dude is a riff master and his natural ability to make such awesome riffs and rhythm, and DOES IT WHILE SINGING is fucking amazing. His sound and riffage helped create what we think of as thrash.
Dave’s definitely got skill, no question but as more of a rhythm player myself Hetfield and Scott Ian are the two I look up to the most along with other thrash-adjacent guitarists like Matt Heafy & Rob Flynn
No love for Ron Jarzombek? That dude is crazy good...and crazy. I can't name too many other guitarists (thrash or otherwise) that name Carl Stalling as an influence.
Been lots of great thrash players. One of my favorites that I don't think is as well known is Jeff Loomis. Love Mustaine an a lot of what Metallica has done. The Big Four have always been my favorite bands even though I've loved many others, they've just been with me since the 80's. So many good players over the years.
My list: 10th bobby gustafson of overkill 9th frank blackfire of sodom 8th rob cavestany of death angel 7th james and kirk of metallica 6th kerry king and jeff hanneman of slayer 5th alex skolnick of testament 4th jeff waters of annihilator 3rd mike sifringer of destruction 2rd mille petrozza of kreator (nice of you to give them a shout) 1st dave and marty of megadeth
That’s a hell of list Bobby Gustafson never gets any love, what a hell of player, also Rocky from suicidal even though it’s not trash dude could bang it out
Larry Lalonde doesn't get any credit as a thrash guitarist, even though he started in thrash and death metal. I heard that's why Primus opened on the last Slayer tour. Ler was friends with Slayer pre-Primus.
Okay I'm gonna be honest, aside from mentioning some members from Testament and Kreator, this whole list was playing it too safely. I think you need to broaden a little of your thrash metal catalogue (this goes out to others too) and know that there are others that could've been mentioned. Not to say that you might've found your next Kerry King or your next Dave Mustaine, but there are a lot of thrash guitarists out there that put the 'thrash' to their guitar work.
It's hard to choose between Dave Mustaine and James Hetfield, but the overall best guitarist is Mustaine. Such a guitar god and has been killing it since 1981 with Metallica. James Hetfield is one of the better rhythm guitarists ever.
Dave Mustaine's influence looms large in thrash metal. There's no denying that. I personally think that a couple people surpass him in technique though. As far as Rhythm guitar playing, James Hetfield hands down!! He has the fastest/tightest picking hand in all of thrash. And his guitar tones on Albums like "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets" are still being chased by guitar players to this day. For lead guitar playing, I'm going with Alex Skolnick of Testament. He's a crazy good lead guitar player! Very innovative and very underrated in my book!
@rafyta7 Groove Metal? lol. Groove metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that originated in the early 1990s and is also known as neo-thrash or post-thrash. And metallica is more groove then any of the people listed.
Luke, you got it wrong with Dave Mustaine. Marty Friedman is the best thrash guitarist and it’s not even close, he can do everything Dave Mustaine does on his best work and his solos were better than Mustaine’s. Marty Friedman is the thrash goat.
Alex Skolnick would school all these guitarists. How many of them had Joe Satriani as a teacher and then graduated from Berkley School of Jazz? Alex is the most legitimate guitarist out of all of them.
Although I'm not going to say Dave mustang isn't a great metal guitaist only a moron who's never sat down a listen to Megadeth would say that without Dave mustang Metallica wouldn't be where they are now and Cliff Burton of course but Megadeth isn't Thrash there's a difference between heavy metal and Thrash anyway that's a tough question because there's a lot of great thrash guitar players out there along with James hetfield Metallica isn't Thrash haven't watched the video yet though.
THE TWO BEST THRASH GUITARIST OF ALL TIME WILL ALWAYS BE JAMES HETFIELD AND KIRK HAMMETT THAT SHOULD. E A GIVEN WITHOUT METALLICA THERE WOULD NO SUCH THING AS THRASH METAL. THEY WERE THE FIRST EVER THRASH METAL BAD, IF IT WAS NOT FOR METALLICA THE TERM THRASH WOULD NOT EVEN EXIST. DAVE MUSTAINE SUCKS BALLS MEGADEATH IS ABSOLUTELY GARBAGE, THEY WOULD NOT EVEN BE A BAND IF IT WAS NOT FOR METALLICA.

Dave Mustaine for me. His playing is genuinely moving.
Also awesome that you gave X-Men 97 a shout-out.
Exodus is my fav thrashband.
Gary Holt my fav guitarist
This kind of video is awesome!! Think it would be cool series to breakdown guitarists by sub genre like this
Favourite Thrashers: Armoured Angel (bias because Canberran)
Best guitarist: Ryan Waste
I came here from the Rizz show. Subscribed and gained 10lbs, credit score dropped, and wife left with the dog. But at least I know who the best thrash guitarists are!
Thank you for subscribing!*
(*success results are not guaranteed)
Dave started it. All the players you mentioned all say Dave blew them away when they first saw him. Except Kirk
1. Marr
2. Tea
3. Freed
4. Man
I think he is not included because he ain’t mostly thrash
Best soloist; yes. Overall guitarist; Dave.
I actually agree with you ... for once. Surprising!
I would have loved to see Marty Friedman, but I can understand why you wouldn't want to add all the guitarists Megadeth has been through!
Danny Spitz and Dan Lilker are underrated as hell and never get mentioned in this discussion
To be fair, Spitz didn't really stay in music after he left, though, from what I've heard, he's really made a name for himself as a watchmaker.
Lilker is a bassist
@@plasticgreendan5919 For some reason I always thought he played guitar in Nuke Assault, that explains why he's never mentioned 😂
Mille Petrozza from Kreator gets overlooked too much. Such a great band, and probably a lot more influential than a lot of people realize
This gonna be a good one...even tho he was rhythm I always felt Scott Ian was underrated even as respected and regarded as he is bc anthrax wasn't one of the other big 4 bands...just my opinion
Anthrax is in the big 4!!!! Saw all 4 together live lol!!!
And hell yeah for the X-Men 97 shout-out.
Tommy T. Baron needs more love! Coroner gets overlooked way too often!
100% agree with Mustaine being the best. Saw Megadeth live last year, and the dude's playing is still absolutely unreal. That being said, I definitely feel like Marty is worthy of mention as well.
I love Marty's work too, but I think Dave deserves it for being foundational to the genre.
Marty isn't really a thrash guitarist. He's more neoclassical. He just happened to be playing over top of mustaines thrash riffs in megadeth
Ah man this is the first comment that showed up before even pushing show more... Damn spoiled..
But it makes sense he is
Now we need to know who are the greatest Bass player in Rock/Punk/Metal and alternative music.
Gary holt
I think its a crime to not mention Marty Friedman
No mention of Jeff Waters?
Marty Friedman belongs in the conversation. So does Kurdt Vanderhoof of Metal Church, IMO.
Dave popularized the spider walk riff. That's all I need to say
You really need some Jeff Waters in your life
Finally someone gives recognition for the thrash master, he has had so many good guitar players in his band and he knows the genre! You gained another subscriber today!
Charlie Benante wrote the majority of Anthrax’s songs. He definitely deserves some credit.
I was thinking the same thing
5 alex skolnick
4 eric peterson
3 alex skolnick
2eric peterson
honarble mention : akex skolnick and eric peterson
1 alex scolnick
For some reason Scott Ian has always seemed like he would generally be the friendliest guy in thrash.
Tommy from Coroner is so underrated and needs more recognition
Knew Dave was going to be the number one. He truly is great with the guitar, regardless of anything else.
DAVE MUSTAINE ABSOLUTELY SUCKS FUCKING BALLS AND MEGADEATH IS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST FUCKING BAND ON THE PLANET
THE TWO GREATEST THRASH GUITARIST OF ALL TIME WILL ALWAYS BE JAMES HETFIELD AND AN KIRK HAMMETT AND METALLICA WILL ALWAYS BE THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST BAND ON THE FUCKING PLANET. IF IT WAS NOT FOR METALLICA MEGADEATH WOULD NOT EVEN BE A BAND
Testament's Eric Peterson. Next question.
When I first heard of and to anthrax I thought Scott ian was the frontman and guitarist
Bobby Gustafson. That's all. Look him up.
He was damn incredible!!!
Kreator is slowly becoming one of those bands I'm kicking myself for not discovering earlier. Hell same with Testament and Exodus. Great riffs from all of these bands.
North Carolina. I would pick somewhere like Chapel Hill or Durham.
Not really thrash, but I think Lenny Rutledge from Sanctuary has to be given credit for what he did, at least in terms of songwriting. Of course, vocalist Warrel Dane was the actual driving force when he was still alive, but they were a great combo with Lenny. If Dave Mustaine works with a certain musician, he definitely is a good one. Rutledge is no exception.
i think the fact that dave and hetfield sing as well as play guitar puts them a little higher than the rest.
Mille Petrozza also sings.
The hardest working man in metal is the best and his name is Phil Demmel!
Rob Cavestany is one of the most underrated in thrash. Give Death Angel a listen. For my money he’s a million times better than King or Hammett
Keep the good content coming.
Mustaine is #1…number 2 is whoever else is playing guitar in Megadeth at the time
Tommy T. Baron.
Hetfield or mustaine. Cant decide between these two
Maybe a follow up focussing on new bands from the last 10/15 years?
If we're talking about pure thrash, definitely James is number 1.
Reese Scruggs deserves way more recognition
For me it's Mustain and Skolnik...
My list:
10th bobby gustafson of overkill
9th frank blackfire of sodom
8th rob cavestany of death angel
7th james and kirk of metallica
6th kerry king and jeff hanneman of slayer
5th alex skolnick of testament
4th jeff waters of annihilator
3rd mike sifringer of destruction
2rd mille petrozza of kreator (nice of you to give them a shout)
1st dave and marty of megadeth
That’s a hell of list Bobby Gustafson never gets any love, what a hell of player, also Rocky from suicidal even though it’s not trash dude could bang it out
I agree Dave is the best 🤘🏻
Dave "I replaced David Ellefson with NFTs" Mustain is a guitar prodigy. Massive shithead. But wild with the guitar.
That's only one of many monikers he's been given over the years.
Only guitarists in thrash better than Dave are the ones he hired to play alongside him. And not all of them either, lol.
I would have gone with Dimebag Darrell myself.
I love Thrash Metal 🤘🎸
Larry Lalonde doesn't get any credit as a thrash guitarist, even though he started in thrash and death metal. I heard that's why Primus opened on the last Slayer tour. Ler was friends with Slayer pre-Primus.

Chuck Schuldinger was an incredible guitarist!!!
Probably Gary Holt ir Dave Mustaine ( bot incredibly versatille on the thrash camp)
I knew Dave would be your favourite
DIME?? How is he not on the list??🤘
Mustaine is fantastic ! 🤘
Dave Mustaine's influence looms large in thrash metal. There's no denying that. I personally think that a couple people surpass him in technique though.

holt, hanneman
Alex scolnick by far
Dave might just be the most metal person on the planet.
@rafyta7 Groove Metal? lol. Groove metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that originated in the early 1990s and is also known as neo-thrash or post-thrash. And metallica is more groove then any of the people listed.
No love for Andreas Kisser?
Max is better.
I’m the biggest ‘Deth fan but i need to give James Hetfield the props. Dave’s been sloppy af for years now.
I think Mustaine
Luke, you got it wrong with Dave Mustaine.
Marty Friedman is the best thrash guitarist and it’s not even close, he can do everything Dave Mustaine does on his best work and his solos were better than Mustaine’s.
Marty Friedman is the thrash goat.
Dave was much better at rhythm though
I can't say I disagree, but Mustaine was foundational to the genre.
No Dimebag?
I think most would consider Pantera to be Groove Metal, not thrash.
Alex Skolnick would school all these guitarists. How many of them had Joe Satriani as a teacher and then graduated from Berkley School of Jazz? Alex is the most legitimate guitarist out of all of them.
Alex Skolnick. Next question.
Lars
Dystopia is such a great album musically. The MAGAt lyrics....not so much.
Short answer: Kerry King.

I know that song…
THE TWO BEST THRASH GUITARIST OF ALL TIME WILL ALWAYS BE JAMES HETFIELD AND KIRK HAMMETT THAT SHOULD. E A GIVEN WITHOUT METALLICA THERE WOULD NO SUCH THING AS THRASH METAL. THEY WERE THE FIRST EVER THRASH METAL BAD, IF IT WAS NOT FOR METALLICA THE TERM THRASH WOULD NOT EVEN EXIST.
