Mad Marty yeah but motors designed more for the track aren't good for sitting still or stop and go, they're meant to be taking in alot of air. People use the excuse they aren't made for the street and for the most part they're correct. Not many sport bikes are really made for the street. My brother has a new r6 and even that runs hot asf in traffic so I don't see the big fuss people have over Ducatis

Congrats chief. Are you buying it from a dealer with a warranty and a service record? Known issues with 1299 are clutch slave cylinder leak and rear rocker cover leak on right side. Enjoy.
You just explained why I installed the radiator guard immediately. I’ve seen someone else do the manual override also. Changing the coolant to mostly water is also a good idea.

Please do a valve adjustment video! I love the design of these Panigale desmo valve systems (no more belts and no stupid cam chain running around all the bullshit at once) and id love to know how to do my own valve services when I can finally get my own.
Also with all your DIY stuff maybe come up with a difficulty rating, lot of this stuff is hugely helpful to know how to do but if you don’t have any previous understanding it might be hard to identify stuff. Love your videos, really encouraging me to buy a Panigale.
These bikes are crazy 🔥. I recently purchased a bike for my wife to enjoy the virtues of motorcycling. A few days ago I was leading her down the roads of northern Vermont, only riding 35-50 mph. On a hot and humid day the bike was running 212-216. I typically run a more spirited pace and run mid 190s. I typically track a 1199r and the fan will be on by the time I pull it Into the pits.

My streetfighter 848 2014 overheated because a stone damaged the lower radiator then it broke down on the road. Now it won't start up again even after leaving it overnight. The fan didn't start up at the time. When it cut out there was coolant leaking out so I don't know what has happened and why it won't run do you have any advice 🤔 😢
How easy Is it to replace lower radiator? My panigale’s looks the same, fins all bent.
Great ingenuity. Was the lower radiator just shot to hell? When you pulled it you can clean it, blast it with some water to clean the gunk out.
Did the aftermarket radiators help?
I did the same thing to my Ducati 749. Except I just tap into the negative wire right off the fan and used the toggle switch to connect to the negative on the battery. On my bike the fan always gets 12v to the fans and a relay connects the negative to turn the fans on. So on my bike the relay can still control the fans but I can also manual turn them on without any issues. Also removing the thermostat actually makes the bike overheat more and faster. I tried that and made it worst so I put it back in. Hope this helps anyone. Keep up the great videos.
Good idea all bikes should have this option just in case. Especially a race bike! Put in sport mode should kick on a fan lol
Ever thought about radiator guards? I’ve installed mine on my 1199 mainly to prevent rocks from puncturing the radiators, but they should prevent radiator wear like you have, too, no?

Thats a great idea! I was considering that after i did a coolant flush and disconnecting that pesky exhaust valve which even made the bike stall when hot. even here in southern Ontario here in the warmer weather I'm finding going below 60-70kph she gets hot. but before i start cutting wires, where do you get a tuneboy? thanks for the video
Andrew Smith tuneboy is a tool that allows you to alter the ecu, and can even turn your start button into cruise control. Not a simple thing. Contact them before you do anything. FYI tuneboy can void your warranty. Tuneboy Link

Have you seen the kit, where you install some type of carbon fiber (I forgot) in the area of the exhaust. It essentially redirects the heat away from your body back to itself. Have you seen this?
No I haven't seen this. I'm only aware of the heat shield kits. With the comfort seat I don't have much of an issue with heat.

I got an almost new original lower radiator off ebay for 70$... they have after market new ones for 120 or so. Haven’t changed it yet but I’ll put a cover over it when I do to protect the bigger rock hits... mine has 10k on it with a lot of high speed. So it beat up bad.
I don’t own a Ducati, but my ZX6r never gets above 212*. I live in Kansas and we get 110* sometimes in the summer. Most of time it’s 95+*. My bike most of time is 165-185*. Sounds like you got a good work around.
When yours burped did it come out of the drain tube? My 17 supersport has a little coolant leak but it's coming from the tank itself
Braden Pryor yes, the drain tube is connected to the coolant reservoir tank. That's where it typically comes from when the radiator pressure expands past the radiator cap valve. Where is yours coming from? The radiator?
@@FancyAnimal no I think it's coming from the expansion tank. It's dripping down and going along the exhaust and some other stuff. It's almost out of warranty so I'm taking it in. Keep making these awesome videos!
Ducati's run hot. Mine hits 220 pretty quickly in slow traffic and gets pretty uncomfortable... I'd not own one if I was constantly sitting in traffic.
I wondered how well those Pani radiators would hold up... looks like you need to just replace them periodically.

Christ bro if your overheating in Southern California. I know a Ducati in Southern Florida will be a nightmare in the Summer which is Eleven and a half months out of the year. Another great video.
Was in Tampa with the bike in 2016. Love it there. Are there any twisties? Seems pretty flat. The main issue is the traffic here. If you're not sitting at a light for 3 minutes, you're stuck in bumper to bumper and splitting lanes.

Had the same issue with my 1299 didnt know how to fix it at the time and Ducati werent interested in sorting out my issue even under warranty.
I have an 899 panigale what I use is Evans waterless coolant it has a crazy high boiling point .you have to prep wash it out first as it's waterless .do some research and see if it helps you out your friendly neighbourhood satman
This was a very common fix on the old 916/748 bikes. It was easier on those because you could just jump the tempsensor to turn the fan on. Add a switch and you had on or auto fans.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! I did the blue wire mod on my F-350 truck, which is a little different than what you did here, in that it leaves the stock cooling ability untouched, but adds the ability to flip the fans 100% on with the flip of a switch. Not unlike the Ducati, the Ford isn't good at cooling itself either. I have the same issue with my Ducati S4, so I was looking for someone who had done a similar bypass, and here you are. Rocking!
My only suggestion would be to hold off on using that R word at the end of your video. It may not be all TH-cam's fault you're losing subscribers. After all, there's a lot of us out here that don't wanna hear that trem used. Just sayin'.
Yeah it's a pain, mine get up to 221 deg f in summer and sometimes a bit over. My radiator is in good condition.
Do you recommend a full WSBK Radiator upgrade on this model for street use?
Zef Lorenz if your stock radiators are in good shape, you can get away with having the ecu flashed to lower the fan trigger temp to 185F. I’m going SBK because the lower radiator needs replacing.
@@FancyAnimal I got tuneboy to install cruise control (got cruise and tune) on my 1299 and didn’t even think about lowering the fan-on temp. Doing it this weekend!
The fan on the 1199 is powered at the BBS which is protected by a 15 amp fuse. Obviously, the BBS powers several other components on the vehicle as well. The fan wiring utilizes a relatively small gauge wire (perhaps 16 AWG, I can't recall). Depending on the operating environment, the SPAL fan (VA105-A101-46) found on the 1199 draws between 4.8-6.5 amps during operation. The circuit should be fused accordingly with a 7.5 amp fuse.

What does that have to do with a heating problem?
Adding a switch to the bike (as shown in this video) allows you to control the fan manually. You can turn the fan on long before it would turn on otherwise. It helps to keep the bike running a little cooler, a little longer. My intent when I posted the comment above was to remind viewers that among other things, the wire size and the fuse rating must be correct when performing any electrical circuit modification(s).

Lindy Burns not knowing anything about your bike, flush the coolant to remove internal scale and replace the radiator cap. Check to be sure the water pump is good, thermostat is opening, and the fan is kicking on. If that doesn’t work, it might be time to replace the radiator(s).
Can you damage anything. My 959 hit 120c before I noticed. The fan broke.
Yes you can damage your wallet. 120C / 248F is really the upper limit of coolant temperature. If it was a brief event you’ll be ok…a minute or so. Sustained temps over 125C will warp the cylinder heads, crack the engine case and internals, spin bearings, and empty your savings account.

I'm not following? The V4 doesn't appear to have an overheating issue. Although, it will roast you even more than the Vtwin bikes. I guess MAC makes a good aftermarket radiator kit that solves the Vtwin issue.

use a jet wash to clean and clear the radiator fins, my ZX10R was getting blocked too, I blasted all the crap out and it made a massive difference.
Tried it. Removed the radiators and power washed then. Didn’t work.
If you still have this bike, but have you replaced the plastic "squirter"/thermostat housing and associated hoses and clamps that tend to leak? My 1299 started leaking with only 3k miles, which is unacceptable. Also, as I'm sure you know by know, radiator guards need to be installed on any sportbike as soon as it leaves the showroom floor
Mark Strong it seems the 1299 has many more gremlins than the 1199. I’m pushing 40,000 miles and the thermostat housing and associated hoses have never leaked..nor have the clutch or brake components. Still on the original clutch as well. The radiators are packed and corroded with sand from spending a year in the Mojave desert. Having them ultrasonically flushed would cost more than replacing the lower unit...not sure the guards would filter fine silt. Can’t hurt to install a set after I get a new radiator set. Cheers!
Thanks for the input, that's pretty amazing, 40k with little maintenance (valve adjustments?). I watched your "8 things" video but considering 2021 S1000RR (black). Was never a fan of the "wacky cat" front end on previous bikes.
Mark Strong I did the valve adjustment myself at 30,000 miles. Only one valve shim of the 16 was out of the specified range. Someday I’ll post the video. Was never a fan of the s1000 until the new one came out. New one is just too generic. Paint if neon green and it’s a ZX10.

Mark Strong its a great all around performer with the most advanced electronics. You’ll have to get a Brentune etc to fix the neutering in the midrange power due to US emissions. It’s really bad. Engine character is nonexistent. I’d much rather have a V4 but it’s a good chunk of dough.
You can always just put an extra aftermarket fan, wire it in and with a switch just manually turn it on when youre in slow moving traffic, keeps the temp a bit under control and you dont mess with the factory wiring.
Sysmo that's infinitely more complicated than simply reprogramming the fan thermostat or buying a second female connector to wire from, that just plugs into the male fan connector. There's no room for another fan and if you place it in the duct, it's obstructed by OEM fan.
@@FancyAnimal There are a few available online for many bikes, some just plug in the factory harness (like for some ktm trail bikes) and some you just connect to the battery then to a manual switch, of course if it fits each radiator, if theres enough space etc but its usually adaptable.
Is Antigravity stock battery on Ducati?
No. Twin Panigales come with a lead-acid battery. V4 has a lithium battery..not sure who mfgs it.

Spray radiator liberally with engine Degreaser, from a rattle can...let sit, then hose off as hard as you can without damaging cooling fins.
You probably dont need, but also should have, a diode after the switch to prevent current flowing the wrong way.
Just fit a lower temp thermo switch...
Once my Super Duke 1290r reaches operating temp,, it never moves. Always exactly in the middle of the temp gauge. I owned a Monster 1200 before. It’s fan would come on at 215 which would cool it to 185, then switch off then back on when hit 215. The fan should switch on sooner.

I have much simplified solution for that problem. You could change thermal switch to lower temperature, so the fan kick on much earlier than stock.
No need to change the switch. The ecu can be reprogrammed to any fan on/off condition you desire.
R H I don't see anything on the 1199 dash to do this. I'm guessing the 1299 is the same. The dealer may be able to do this through the ECU. I need to do more research.
I don't think that you understand me. On the radiator is thermal switch that have two wires. On that switch is supposed to be a numbers at which temperature is a range to operate. Than you buy switch with lower temp to go on, and replace it. So easy, you don't mess with harness or reprogram the ECU.
It’s designed for the street. And don’t ride in the city... canyons only. I have to tape 2-4” of the top radiator if it’s under 50-60f to keep the bike in the 170-180 range. One day it was raining in the summer and it was running around 130 in the summer. Don’t think I have a thermostat that works
Wish you lived in MN, IA or WI, I would pay you to install a switch for my 2008 1098 and 2022 Panigale - they both get warm when I drive around the city for 20 to 30 min. Great video!!!
I figured your bike doesn’t thaw out from the winter until September in those states Aye? Contact the Ducati dealer in the fall when service slows and they can reprogram the Panigale fan switch to come on at 190-195F.
@@FancyAnimal lol...u would think. However, we do get hot here...and humid. I will check with my dealer and get it calibrated to turn on early. Panigale V4 does something like HEAT SOAKING....when I get off the interstate it seems to get hot when I get to the stop light. The V4 sure doesnt like city driving.
Your mirrors are compatibles with Panigale v2?
I don’t think so. The magnesium cowl frame that holds the dash, headlights, and mirrors looks the same as the old V4 which has different mounting holes and mirror orientation: kiWaV makes folding mirrors for the 899 - 1299 etc. See if they have V2 types.

i solved the issue with geographic location :D Panigale owner from Norway.
most driving the bike sits at 180f , but some times rise in traffic on a (for us ) hot day to 212 and the fans cool it down quickly.
hfracing kul mann! I rode the bike mostly in Boston which has only 2 seasons - winter and road construction. Nice and cool. Pirellis work ok down to about 2'C lol. Norway's a beautiful country. Planning a trip out there in the spring. kjør trygt

Lunch will be roundabouts the same more or less, depends on where you eat. To put it in perspective a cinema ticket (2D) goes for 13.87usd = 124nok.
Talked to them today and them diagnosed it finally with a failing fan. Wouldn't always slow down. But after 2-3 cycles the fan would slow down. Hence the system throwing the code and it now working. Ill pick it up Thursday or Friday.

@@FancyAnimal yes, north Tampa has what we call a south run and a north run. Havent done them in a while but we had a group of us that would run it. Generally about a 3 hour run on each side. Definitely worth it though. Some tight stuff as well as great sweepers that load the suspension and wheelie out of.
@@FancyAnimal Well, it was short lived. Fans are working fine now but DQS stopped both up and down and threw and engine code and disabled it. Man this thing has been a pain. This was only the third 15 mile ride since I got it back. I think its time to hit social media and shame the shop and Ducati North America for not handling this crap.

My 1299s has been in the shop almost 2 months now because of a fan issue. They are replacing the entire harness. Should have just done this with a thermostat attached. Miss my bike, but its under warranty still.
2 Months is unreasonable to replace a wiring harness. What state are you in? Go get the bike and tell them you'll drop it off when the parts come-in. I'm sure it's covered with dust.

@@richmacys if the bike runs fine otherwise, ask if you can pick it -up and reschedule the repair after the summer. Then go to a junkyard or the 1299 tapatalk forum for a parts bike *899, 1199, 1299, 959) and get the female end of the fan connector (with some wire attached), and run the fan switch from the female side. That way you won't have to cut any wires on the factory harness. Disconnect the female connector / switch when you drop it off. You might be able to order just the female side of that wire/connector from the harness.
@@FancyAnimal yeah, that's an option. Runs great when at highway speed. 185f all day long. Get into traffic here in Tampa and it just keeps climbing. If it's not sorted by Thursday I'll just do that. I'm sure I can find a thermostat for it to put inline, in the fairing. Then it would automatically come on after it get hot, and shut off by itself as well. I dont care if it throws codes, as long as it doesn't overheat.

I think evotech makes a gaurd for panigale's. Maybe keep it safer for longer.
Yes, I bought the radiator guard, it was an easy install, and most importantly, it looks nice.
Yes there are number of mfgs for the radiator guard including R&G and Evotech. They don't help with corrosion and sand infiltration which is my main problem, but help.
Not that you did a bad job, but it is way more sensible to just remove the thermostat altogether and solved this issue without splicing in to the wiring harness. None the less in all you did do a good job but the thermostat removed is a better solution, just takes a bit longer to get to operating temperature on cold start. But other than that it would never overheat again.
Absolutely not. The fan is only triggered to turn on when the coolant temperature sensor detects that the temp of the bike is to great and needs help from the fan to decrease the temp quickly and efficiently. This will also happen if you have a sticking or stuck thermostat causing boil over from the reservoir or radiator cap. A bad thermostat will not throw a check engine light or code. It tends to warp heads and blow head gaskets. Imo just remove the thermostat or replace with a new one, also flush your antifreeze and definitely use what type of rating antifreeze ducati recommends. It is italian not a honda. Im sure you're aware of this. Again removing the thermostat will not hurt anything. Just make sure you bleed the system free of air.

@@daytonasayswhat9333 you want me to buy a used undersized radiator on eBay to replace my used undersized radiator? The solution is to buy a proper large capacity racing radiator kit for $2500 or install an auxiliary fan switch for $10.
@@FancyAnimal I guess I misunderstood. I thought you were saying your radiator was full of holes and junk and flowing 30 or 40% less than what it should be. i’m not saying the fans are bad idea. And you can also lower the fan using a software instead. But just while you’re in there, replace it with a yard OEM radiator that doesn’t have junk in it flows 100%.
Too many comments to whine about what you did here, but if it works for you, so be it. It’s hot in that area of the bike so electrical tape won’t last very long, that tiny switch is handling a lot of amps - I think there’s a fan relay although I’m not certain of that. The tuneboy advice is the best route. At least use heat shrink tube, manages the heat better for automotive applications.
Also distilled water and water wetter in climates that don't reach freezing temperatures will definitely help keep the bike cooler
Yes distilled water has about a 15% higher heat capacity at 200F than 50/50 ethylene glycol, but I'm still going to overheat if I'm parked in traffic and there's no radiator airflow to dissipate the heat absorbed by the water. I've read mixed reviews on water wetter. If it was a track bike, I'd use water for sure. Cheers!
everyone watching this video if you'd like to know a preventive maintenance way of keeping this radiator issue from happening is to use radiator cleaner spray and a brush periodically to keep the radiator clean and you won't have to worry about debris caking up on it like that.
The 1199 has been overheating since new and has a radiator sizing and fan switching issue, not a maintenance issue. There is no way to prevent overheating in slow summer traffic and if you say otherwise, you either don’t ride an 1199 or live in the Arctic.
@@FancyAnimal okay. I'm curious though, what say you on the Ducati panigale V2 radiator and fan on a hot day? Has Ducati addressed updated he issues with that bike?
@@JS-fb6ww the 899, 959, V2 are generating far less heat since they’re down 50hp vs the Superbikes. The issue is limited to the 1199 and 1299. The bikes are fine when moving, but suffer under extended hot weather city use. There are a number of properly sized aftermarket radiators available.

when is the last time you changed your coolant... you should test it with your AMP Meter or just change it all together,
also buy some coolant additive that reduces the engine heat buy about 20% !

I use to have a Monster 1200. The fan would not come on till 215. The fan would take it down to 180, then it would repeat itself. I own a 2018 Super Duke and the temp gauges never moves from warm up. Rock steady no matter what. I agree, the fan needs to come on sooner
