His growth throughout the show was incredible. From standing in the background to having his name mentioned he is without a doubt one of the most ruthless characters to appear on television.
The salamanca nobody noticed in breaking bad is actually gonzo. He's tucos brother in law. Though I imagine that's from tuco marrying gonzo's sister and not the reverse since I don't see gus leaving hector salamanca's niece alive.
Unless that niece is part of the family business I doubt Gus would care or know about her. Plus, Mexican families are huge. There's likely Salamancas in the U.S that are nowhere near the family business.
Gus says the Salamanca name dies with Hector, Tuco’s niece isn’t necessarily a Salamanca by name and probably can’t pass down the Salamanca name either.
I really actually wish the Gaff was Joachin Salamanca simply because all Salamanca's are either top level bosses (Hector and Tuco) or highly skilled enforcers (Marco, Leonel and Lalo) so in a sense, every Salamanca brings something to the table, and those that don't have to find that skill to be part of such a deadly family as the Salamanca's. It's a lot to live up to.
If Gaff really is Hector's grandson, and Mike ends up killed him, that would be a big unintentional revenge towards Hector since the Salamancas threatened to kill Mike's granddaughter
The breaking bad TH-cam channel recently uploaded a video of the Salamanca family tree and they use footage of Gaff when talking about Joaquín. So looks like they are the same person
Let's not forget "Bizsnatch" Abuela Salamanca that we met in Better Call Saul. Maybe she's the real leader of the cartel, and we don't even realize it.
I think Joaquin is the only character in BB/BCS to be poorly written. He could've had a role in BCS but they chose not too. He was the second to last Salamanca alive. he didn't need to be a huge character but maybe show him join up with the twins to take out the Epinoza gang.
He should have showed up to visit his grandfather Hector after he had a stroke. Lalo could have at least said something like "Joaquin is very sorry he can't be here right now. He's working very hard for Don Eladio."
4:02 I think that Joaquin may not have had a high role in the Cartel, since he was young. I mean he had a 70 years old grandpa, so he was probably like 18-19 when he died. During such a short time of his adulthood maybe he didn't have time to get really high in there.
I completely agree with this video. Also both Alberto and Eduardo have short nicknames (Tuco and Lalo) so It makes sense that Joaquin's nickname is Gaff.
The reason I love this theory is because it makes a lot more sense, not only from a narrative point of view in how the Salamancas are presented to us always a threatening and violent force (with the exception of Abuelita as she's a civillian). But also because Gus made SURE to have Gaff killed by Mike in the revenge plot. "Joaquin" only died AFTER Gus said without Eladio there was no one to answer to, and that the remaining cartel members were free to go, why would a Salamanca be free to go? I suspect Gus MUST have known about this, but he just uses Hector's previous trauma with Jesse being involved in Tuco's death as a way to further torment Hector in a way that was like "Haha I've killed all your relatives and I've even teamed up with other people who have killed your relatives and he's just killed another one!"
The official Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul TH-cam channel released a Salamanca family tree video showing "Gaff" as Joaquin. Sooo your theory now has promise!
Might be a goofy what if, but I feel the whole series wouldve played out differently if Walt actually hooked up with the Hispanic Principal in season 3 instead of getting fired. Could make a good episode
It's a bit different from your usual fare, but I think this might be my favorite insight I've seen from you on the Breaking Bad universe. Moreover, it strikes me as likely, looking at it in this light, that Gaff being Joaquin was literally the show's intent, but it got sadly lost in translation at some point - it seems noteworthy to me that the actor who briefly plays Joaquin both closely resembles the actor who plays Gaff and is primarily a stunt actor.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought this. I know some reactors have thought that too. It feels weird to have a member of the main antagonist family who's important enough to be killed off by the show's deuteragonist be a nobody we never met before, while this guy who's always doing cool shit whenever he's on screen and who is specifically targeted by Mike, aka Gus' tactical nuke, is some rando whose name you wouldn't even know unless you looked it up. That's a writing decision that's baffled me for years.
There’s definitely way more Salamancas… why? If Hector is Tio, then who is the father of Lalo or Tuco… what about if they had more siblings - who was Hectors former partner, did they have more kids???
Hector Salamanca’s last spoken words are that Salamanca blood built the cartel right before he passes out. I’m assuming they’re all dead from cartel violence or from living in such a high stress environment they all had high blood pressure and heart issues and Hector is the last of the older generation standing. Lalo admitted he couldn’t sleep and he was easily the most relaxed of all of them. Gus said he wiped out the bloodline and I don’t think he would’ve said that lightly and without doing his due diligence.
It could just be that there are more salamancas but they aren't in the cartel and have no business with them whatsoever and they could be scattered in the US or even some in mexico
There's been a recent video by the official Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul channel about the Salamanca family tree, and it seems that you were right and Gaff IS indeed Joaquin Salamanca. (One more reason to make that What If Joaquin Salamanca Survived what if video I've been suggesting for a while, eh?)
He was so feared that noone dared to even speak his name in the show while he was alive, truly one of the characters of all time. Amazing work by the showrunners creating this legend, bravo Vince!
Agreed, Gaff seemed much closer to being a true Salamanca then the random extra that got killed off. I like this version of the story much better. Not to say the way the show actually went about it wouldn't match reality. There are plenty of examples of high level enforcers changing out family names over the years. Not every person born in a particular family is as gifted as their relatives.
what if in better call saul lalo would revel himself to be alive to all of the salamancas leading to them all having a meeting/meeting up, how would this have affected gus as we know hector couldn't hide the fact that lalo was alive, meaning instead of agreeing to shake hands with gus/ meet with him he instead left to go meet with the salamancas meaning gus would have to think of a new plan or prepare for total war with the cartel.
4:07 he served as the source of info for Gus' weakness, if Jessie didn't kill him, Gus never takes him to Hector, so Jessie is never able to give away this info to Saul who wouldn't be able to help Walter

She's the livia (from the sopranos) of breaking bad and better call saul
Abuelita is the CARTEL!!

She's Pacino's mom in Scarface
