    I'm not a huge fan of Superman, but even i know he doesn't see himself as a god, he knows he has great powers and the directive of his father Jor-El could turn him into a tyrant, but, thanks to both his directive and him being raised by the Kents, he uses his powers to help others, he gives people an example of courage, truth, justice, virtues to cultivate. That is one of the reasons why the Snyder Superman bothers me, he isn't like that, and his father died giving him advice Jon Kent never would.

    • @ardendragoon
      @ardendragoon ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I couldn't get back into the film after that. It made no bloody sense. Why the heck would he stand there and watch his father die. He has super speed. Run out and tie him to something, nobody sees.

      I agree but I will play Devil's Advocate mainly that while Superman clearly doesn't see himself as a God, that is exactly how humans could perceive Superman as because the aspirational archetype of courage, truth, justice and heroism puts him on a pedestal above everyone else. I think this especially true in modern age where cynicism is treated as the norm while idealism is the outlier.

    13:50 Superman is that guy you meet who tells you he does charity work, goes to church every Sunday, remembers peoples names and birthdays, and always has time to talk with people, and you want to doubt he’s got it all together but then you see him do it all and all you can think once you see him do it is “You know what, if he can do all of this stuff, I can do just a little better myself.”

    James Gunn know how to do only one kind of movie and one kind of character and people is unable to notice that. This puzzled me to no end.
    And honestly I don't know how a guy who finds fun joking about kids could ever understand a paragon like Superman

      Gunn's 'jokes' reveal a disgusting mind. And his Suicide Squad was a lot like his Guardians films. The shark was Groot. And this forgettable film lost money. His Peacemaker is equally forgettable. And Gunn disrespects the DC brand in a disgusting and perverted manner that should disqualify him from overseeing the franchise and one of its flagship characters.

    A few years ago, Gunn produced a movie called, "Brightburn" which took Superman's origin and twisted it so that instead of becoming a hero, he became a murderer. He's not the right fit for a Superman movie.

    The notion of Superman being a god also comes from the gradual OP-ing of him over time.
    That's one thing I like about the 90s Animated series. He was simply "Super". Not Omnipowerful.
    He could fight a big robotic T Rex and have a bit of a challenge.

    My position is that you don't hire an auteur to be the Big Picture Guy overseeing a franchise. It takes a different skill set.
    Nor do you hire the auteur to direct a story with established characters. For these you want someone who is a "gun for hire" to direct because that director will stay on point more often that the auteur who just wants to slather his brand over the established property.
    It was Dean Cain in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman who said, "Clark Kent is who I am. Superman is what I can do."

    _Brightburn._ Written by Brian and Mark Gunn, and produced by James Gunn. A fundamental misunderstanding of Superman. I don't need the BS Multiverse defense, either. Now James Gunn is going to make _Superman: Legacy._ I can only imagine this means a legacy of bad ideas. They should just call it _Soupy Leftovers._ After what Hollywood has done the past decade to Superman, that's all we're going to get on the big screen.

  • @GeekOwtLowd

    He's clearly going to do All Star Superman. So his first move is going to be killing off Superman.
    My guess is that he's going to do a Super Saccharin tribute/sendoff to Superman, so that he can claim to honor the character whilst disposing of him promptly. So Superman will just be an former icon to the Gunn DCU.

    Exactly! James Gunn should stick to horror and gross-out movies even though I did like Super 2010. I also liked his Slither which is an underrated horror, but is too definitely a gross-out comedy movie. Brightburn felt too silly and edgy to be compelling and believable. It just shows the narcissism and the "I don't give a crap about what happens anymore. The universe and world be damned and thrust into hellfire," passive-nihilistic attitude of the 90s and onward because of government oversight, institution corruption, Bush and the Iran and Iraq oil stuff and Hussein Ba'th party stuff. Besides all that, the first couple times I saw Guardians of the Galaxy was great including Dave Bautista's character whom I found charming and funny, but also badass. It also helped that I like Chris Pratt as an actor and didn't mind him being in the MCU. Anyway, I agree with all your conclusions, Prof. I didn't enjoy the following Guardian of the Galaxy films after 1 though.
    Brightburn and Gunn and Snyder are what you get when money and greed and narcissism override genuine sincere virtues like hope, loyalty, reverence and worship, morality, goodness and kindness of people, righting wrongs, and courage etc. These people I would be willing to bet if I was a betting man, are the same people who lack these very same principles and are more than likely paid nepo baby sleazebags like Weinstein and co. I don't think Gunn and Snyder knows or even believes in the goodness and kindness of humanity and having heart. It has to be all doom-and-gloom and the next great depression era for everyone. They probably just want to see the world crash and burn up from their ivory sheltered towers. All because they want to morph the USA into what it's not into something unrecognizable and twisted and grim and hellish. They're actually trying to morph youngins' impressionable, gullible still developing minds. Deplorable.

  • @dasuero7489
    @dasuero7489 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For the record too, I only liked Man of Steel because to his credit Snyder is excellent at visual and special effects directing. And because of Henry Cavill who I mainly enjoyed in Mission Impossible Fallout and The Man from Uncle, the 2000s film adaptation of Count of Monte Cristo and The Witcher. It was just nice to see him doing something different with Man of Steel. Not saying he was good. I didn't expect him to be Superman. Him being fired for my soggy knees just proves to me that Gunn and Snyder and his cohorts are the actual people against women and hate them; not to mention Gunn's sleaziness in how he treats actresses directed and working under him for films. This is the same damn industry that has actual terrible slimy greasy reprehensible people like Weinstein with women, Bryan Singer (X-Men films and others; only he assaulted and manipulated little boys and men). Gunn just happened to be 'different' under some guise of "I love superheroes and comics".
    ****For more information about Gunn's sleaziness and crimes and questionable behavior, look no further than this video and choosing Saw VI Scream Queen, "That Really Weird James Gunn Saw Themed Reality Show" by In Praise of Shadows. Excellent video and highly informative as it shows you what kind of person and figure James Gunn really is and what monstrous lengths he is capable of. Down with James Gunn and this iteration of DC. His twitter takes and opinions on r4p3 and pD0philia and children were only the TIP of the iceberg.

    We don't need another origin story. Nobody wants that. That's why the skipped it with new Spiderman movies. They knew we've already seen it a million times. Besides we've already seen this approach with the Snyder movies. Why not keep cavil because everybody loves the guy and he'll put buts in the seats. Use Flashpoint to change his personality to be more in line with his traditional personality. Expand his world. Give him truly worthy enemies to fight. Of whitch there are many, Lobo, braniac etc. And just tell a fun entertaining story. It's not that hard.

    • @dasuero7489
      @dasuero7489 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could not agree more. I hate origin stories with every fiber of my being. It's oversaturated, but also lazy as hell. There's so much autism fanboying for Gunn and Origin Stories. People need to learn when enough is enough. I loved the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films because it only had a singular protagonist with one or two clear villains and no other crossover from a different comic of the same franchise unlike MCU and DCU now. And because of 2 and 3 where 2 had major great character development with Peter and him having to think about separating his time as a web-slinging crime fighter and an awkward nerdy boy. Forget about all the woke blackwashing tokenizing crap in the comics nowadays. Fix your characters first and stories then the woke stuff, but until then, hire better competent people and fire Gunn and Snyder (if only). And Lex Luthor is only as good as the director and writers want him to be and he's generic. There's a whole host of villains and dudes for Supes to choose from and fight, kind of like how Antman 3 had him and the Wasp fight Kang only the execution is what I can only describe as 'terri-bad'.

    I speak with my wallet and remote. I was willing to give Cavill a chance because there's no other actor out there that can sell Supeman's image. With Gadot and Cavill out, Gunn has begun to feel the pain. Many fans skipped Shazam for that very reason and the fact that they will portray a version of superman as a young man, something we saw ad nauseam in Smallville.

    I think I can defend the title. I'm not in James Gunn's mind, so I don't know his reasons for calling it "Gods and Monsters", but I think the title works. DC characters are the closest thing that we have to gods in a secular society. They've been around longer than the Marvel characters, they've achieved greater cultural penetration than Marvel has and when people think of superheroes, they're the ones they normally think of, in much the same way that people would cite Heracles or Perseus when discussing heroes of antiquity.
    As far as Superman goes, I don't have much hope for him getting a good portrayal outside of animation. I've come to the conclusion that it's never going to happen in my lifetime.

    I just got through watching Superman the animated series which I haven’t seen since it air. I am looking forward to that new show “my adventures with Superman”but I am’s sceptical about. I hope it is a more lighthearted and wholesome take on the character.
    Back in to my opinion after re-watching Superman damages at deck knows how long. You know that into adjacent to Superman is good but I have noticed a lot of problems that have been creeping up with the county over the years. Unfortunately for whatever reason the DCAU Superman remind me a lot of the Zack Snyder Man of Steel Superman. However by far my biggest problem with the DCAU Superman is its betrayal of Clark Kent. Diversion the Clark asked too much like Superman in this highlight Hollywood biggest phone was Superman.
    They only see Superman through his surface level of detail. The only see the super and not the man inside.
    Since its debut Superman has arguably involved to be the most human of all superheroes. At a fundamental level he is far more grounded and relatable then Spider-Man/Peter Parker and way more human then will Batman would ever be.
    He simply I kindhearted good person at his core who loves his friends, family and home. He started saving people not out of a sense of responsibility but for the love of people. If he didn’t even have powers he is the type of guy would go out and into community surveys purely because he wants to.
    His possibilities as Superman just ended up developing over time. Yes, he do use this or that he’s alienated help deflect (and get the word) the public from his real life as quite can’t. But even as the mild-mannered reporter Clark lost his job and the people he worked with. You do what you can to make life better as Clark Kent purely out of love.
    I can’t help but be reminded of what Batman sets to the Joker at the end of the dark night. The Joker just refuse to see the good in people, and that is precisely how Hollywood feels about that audience. They refused to believe that a person can purely be good just for the sake of being good.
    This is what was one of my favourite superhero movie if not for a movie of all time is “Superman versus the elite”.
    Sorry for long post. But as a some point I just got through watching Superman the anime series and I am looking forward to that new show. Or being hopefully optimistic about it.
