The Round 19 match between the Sydney Swans vs Geelong at the SCG was the first night match played in the VFL/AFL for premiership points since the early 1950s. Geelong 20.21.141 (Goals: Bright 4, Johnston 4, Mossop 3, Bews 2, Nichols 2, Bruns, Michael Kol, Peake, Reed, Witcombe) defeated Sydney 10.15.75 (Goals: Smith 3, Kruse 2, Browning, Evans, Hounsell, Reid, Taubert).

Only a year and a half later in Round 1 1985, the first night match for premiership points at the MCG happened between North Melbourne vs Collingwood. North Melbourne went on to play home night matches exclusively in 1985 & 1986. Then in 1987 night matches for premiership points became a weekly occurrence shared with every club in the VFL/AFL, which still happens today.
