    Again you guys have put together an easy to follow guide that explains everything you need to know to work with false colour.
    As much as waveforms are good, false colour absolutely saved my bacon on a shoot today where I was balancing window light and a presenter inside.
    Looking forward to the next one lads!

    Different monitors have different colors.
    Also, if you're shooting in log, add a LUT to the monitor to get accurate results, (hoping the monitor can accept LUTs). Fotga and PortKeys make GREAT monitors.

    Great video guys! I learned a lot more about the false color. I have used it a bit myself and I understood something, but this made it all easier. Thanks! I like the new way you present your videos after you built out the studio. It's different lighting etc for the episodes. It makes the videos very interesting to watch! :-)
    (edit) when I just tested it, it was different shades of grey. How can I know which grey color is what on the exposure-meter thing? My false color didn't show all the colors, just some of them. I use a SmallHD Focus.

      @@TheFilmLook it's a great monitor. Great for run and gun shooting because it's so small, but I would like a 7' version too because it can be a bit small for details. I have LUTs on it and all the exposure tools aswell. You can switch pages with different tools and pre-sets for what you need. I love that feature. It's a bit hard to focus with the monitor outdoors because the sun tho. It's not terrabel, but I would love a version that is brighter. But it's an awesome monitor and I recommend it!

    the false color scale is for rec 709
    you do not expose skin tones at 70 ire in log
    so, you need a lut to convert log to rec 709 first, THEN you can use the false colors

    • @TheFilmLook
      @TheFilmLook  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh I didn't know that, cheers! We shot this episode with a standard picture profile on the Sony a7s, so the contrast ratio is already quite similar to rec 709. Will get a rec 709 loaded up on the monitor if we do need to shoot log in the future!

    Have you found any discrepancies between a monitor’s false color IRE reading and the cameras IRE zebra reading? I typically set my camera’s zebras to 65 +/- 3 to expose for skin, but when I look at my monitor the false color IRE value is reading at 70-75 IRE. I wonder if this happens with cheaper monitors that are not as accurate??

    Hi thanks for your video !! Very helpful.
    I was wondering if it was okay to leave some areas under expose (2-10 ire for example) or even in purple because the element is actually black or very dark ? Your example shows that you do but is it actually better to raise the overall image while shooting and then level it down in post ? Thanks in advance for your advice ;)

    • @TheFilmLook
      @TheFilmLook  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's common practice to make sure nothing is completely under or over (0 or 100 IRE). This is because you won't be able to recover the detail from those spots. But if you plan on keeping those parts completely black anyway, and you are struggling to get it absolutely perfect with your lighting conditions, then I wouldn't worry and just keep it black to be honest.

    Thank you for your awesome videos! I'm having trouble with using False Colors...does it matter if I'm using a LUT on my monitor? In other words, should one use false colors with a flat profile or not. Please advise.

    • @TheFilmLook
      @TheFilmLook  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LUTs will change the values on false color, so it's probably worth shooting a few test clips, color grade them to what you like the look of, and add false color to those final images in the editor to see where your values come out. Then you can expose for those values when you are shooting.

    I have a question. If recording SLOG 3 but using a Monitor LUT (not baking it in), when I activate the LUT on the Atomos Shinobi, do I now use false colors to expose for the LUT? How does that work?

  • @adee7546

    I'm editing a film that contains some sharp contrast, which means there is a lot of shadow in my shots. I was worried that a lot of the shots would appear PURPLE in False Color mode, and I would have to bring them up. However, it seems to me that I don't have to do that, as long as I'm happy with Very Dark shadows (imagine a horror film type of lighting). Am I correct? Am I wrong? Should I bring up those shadows until they look BLUE IN False Color?

    The Feelworld has two thin color bands: green between 40 & 50, and pink between 50 & 60. What are they used for?

    • @TheFilmLook
      @TheFilmLook  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they are 45% and 55%. So you have two markers to tell you you are hitting middle grey.

    Hi, Nice video. I love it. I have a problem, I'm using a SmallHD monitor. when I turn on False color, the LUT will automatic turn off. so that means the False color read the Log information instead of LUT information. is there anyway to read the LUT information when we use false color?

    • @TheFilmLook
      @TheFilmLook  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have never used a SmallHD monitor before so we would be able to say. Hope you find a solution.

  • @theobelmas4439

    just curious, it seems like quite the tedious process, it seems like unlike a histogram it would make the setting up much longer giving info you could probably figure out with a histogram and the image, once you get the hang of it, is it really worth it in the end?

    • @TheFilmLook
      @TheFilmLook  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      False Color will pin point the troubled areas, whereas a histogram just gives you information based on the entire image.

    How would you use false colour for Interior or Exterior Shots (for real estate videos)?

    • @TheFilmLook
      @TheFilmLook  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      False colour would help to to keep your shots consistent. Set the exposure which is best for each house, and shoot to that exposure for each room. Consistency is key to real estate videos.

  • @MrSebadecesare

    I love your channel and your content is superb, but 70 IRE for skin tones it is way to high, normally skin tones lives in the midtones 40 to 45 IRE, but it is always better to check your camera white paper to be certain about exposure values. For example clog3 on canon ceos cameras with cmos sensor the skin tones live at 33 IRE on the right ISO value.

    • @TheFilmLook
      @TheFilmLook  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it's different on the picture profile you are using? Log is gonna have a very different curve to a standard/rec709, so false color will certainly read a bit different. But 33 IRE is in the mid-dark shadows, how can you expose skin at 33 IRE without completely underexposing a dark t-shirt, for example? Is your whole image not gonna be super dark?

    • @MrSebadecesare
      @MrSebadecesare 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I mentioned in my comment, generally the midtones live at 40 to 45 IRE in a linear signal, I just mention clog 3 just to illustrate my point (anyways it is not what I am saying is what the white paper from canon states). Anyways any grey card that is your reference for midtones (skin tones) are designed to be 40 IRE reference. XRite color checker video gray scale, references 90 IRE for white, lighter grey 40 IRE, Darker grey 20 IRE, and 0 IRE for black. I suggest to use a waveform monitor to check the IRE values of your false color.

  • @Photographicelements
    @Photographicelements 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    False Color really is the most accurate way to set exposure. It is especially helpful when shooting with minimal light; everything will say it's underexposed, but false will give you a true reading. It can be scary, as a DP, to ignore camera exposure and histogram, but trust the false color. Keep in mind, practice with your monitor or recorder many times before going to set, each system has its quirks.
    I often go through all of the exposure aids, histogram, zebras, waveform to see what each is doing, then end with false color for overall scene mapping.
    False Color does make you a sloppy DP. Use it, trust it, but know when and how to use a light meter, especially for larger productions; it's the language the gaffer understands.

    • @TheFilmLook
      @TheFilmLook  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! Will you being with Histogram then work your way through? Or will you use a tool for a specific type of shot?
