Am I the only one that thinks false color looks a lot like "predator vision"?
What if I told you...

When I watch videos like this, I always look at the shot of the creator to determine whether or not I trust them. You’re exposed perfectly and your skin looks great. Clearly you know what you’re doing (because you look great in it) this is a really valuable, simple, and straightforward video. Thanks for sharing

Feelworld's key makes more sense to me. Purple / Violet light is higher frequency (ultraviolet) than red (infrared). So, if you were arranging them in ascending order by frequency, you'd have red on the far left and purple on the far right.
Oh I agree! IRE has been around for awhile, and like most thing in filmmaking... We do it one way because that's the way it's always been done. 😂

If you're inside, you shouldn't have any issues. exterior shooting will require the sun-hood, perhaps even a more robust sun-hood than it comes with. How have you liked using it so far?

Hey Delane! This is 20mm (APSC) set about a foot below eye level and three/four feet away from my face.
Do you keep your monitor in false color or do you only use it to establish correct exposure then return to natural colors?

Hi Garrett! I would like to know if atomos is measuring the log or the lut data? I have found out that my swit monitor is showing the values of the log footage and ignoring the applied lut. This doesn't make sensw for me, so I'm looking for an alternative. Would appreciate any info about the atomos. Thx
Log, I believe. I seem to remember watching a video on it. The most important thing is the exposure you are actually capturing, therefore monitors show log rater than LUT.
are there any mirrorless cameras that have false color view mode built in their lcd's? so that there is no need for a separate monitor for specifically the false color view..
The only cameras I know of that have false color built in are cinema cameras. Mirrorless cameras still cater to photo first, video second. Because of that, they don’t put all the available cinematography tools inside.
Great video Garrett... So, I'm shooting with a GH5 and FD lenses into a Ninja V, for that "Cinematic Look". My questions are, if I'm shooting V-log and applying a LUT in the Ninja... are the IRE values still reliable? And if I'm using a 70 IRE value for Caucasian skin-tone, what value should I be using for African American skin-tone? In my old stills days I would open up a stop for dark skinned subjects.
Solid questions! I don’t have a Ninja V so I’m not exactly sure how the false color is setup in that device. Generally one of two things happens. There will either be a specific false color for the log type you’re shooting in or false color will be setup for “final look”. If the Ninja V is like my Ninja Flame, I would turn your view LUT on and pull your IRE from that. As you know, exposing for skin tone is always practice. If 70 IRE is the sweet spot for your setup, that’s where I’d expose for each skin tone type. If you have shots that have both talent present, I’d split the difference going slightly over for light skin and slightly under for dark skin. If the scene is lit well, you shouldn’t lose much detail in either direction.
Do the levels roughly equate to the Zone System used in stills photography? So Zone 6 to 7 for caucasian skin depending on scene? Sounds like your percentage range.

Ansel Adams Zone System is logarithmic - in stops. This system is more linear (or subject to Gamma?)
What monitor you recommend for overall editing-recording-color correction? Thx
Field monitors / on camera monitors rarely make good editing / grading monitors. Mainly because of their overall size. You can most computer to give you an decently accurate grade if you have a calibrator. X-Rite makes great color calibrators that you can use to get the best color. For field monitors, my go-to is SmallHD if you can afford it. If that’s out of your price range, Feelworld makes the best entry level monitors IMHO.

I have a question. If recording SLOG 3 but using a Monitor LUT (not baking it in), when I activate the LUT on the Atomos Shinobi, do I now use false colors to expose for the LUT? How does that work?
It depends on the monitor honestly. Generally, if you’re using a particular log, you’ll either need to understand the contrast ratio of that format, or use a rec.709 lut to get full contrast. The SmallHD monitors have EL Zone loaded into them which is a new and insanely good form of false color that’s specifically tuned to the log and camera. It’s pretty amazing

Hello guys great video! But there is something I didn't understand (maybe cause of my English level) around 2:48 you say the sweet spot is between 60 and 75 IRE but just after you talk about 50?? 🤔
50 IRE is neutral grey and 60 is about where you want your skin tones to live.
HELP!! I use Davinci 17. I'm cutting a film and I want several shots to be dark and moody (meaning deep black). Should I worry about the "PURPLE" appearing when I activate the "false color" or not? When I raise the exposure to eliminate the purple, the image is too grey for my taste. What should I do?? Please Help!
In the color grade, you can and should do whatever you want! These tools are for when you’re filming on set.
The delay on those monitors are really talking all my attention 🤣 I’m scared at this point since I just ordered ones of those today lol
LOL don’t let the delay in the video scare you. Digital Delay is funny when you’re feeding at the same video info. They’re fast monitors.
Is the 60-75 IRE rule true for darker skin tones as well?
~65 IRE is the sweet spot for exposure of all skin tones and complexions. You alter the scene lighting to adjust for the contrast ratio. So yes, absolutely!

Does false color work on a log image?
It’s depends on the monitor your have. Some. Knights have a series of calibrations for log profiles (the SWIT does) while others don’t. If they don’t, overlaying a standard Rec.709 preview LUT and just pull your IRE readings from that.

Why was the Atomos showing your arms as being over exposed?
Oh good eye! I think it’s because the color-grade on the video enhanced the saturation of the key, making the pink look more like red. It definitely was showing the correct false color IRL, but I think it popped too hard in the final video.

Doesn’t IRE for skin tones change based on the camera and gamma curve used? On the latest Sony offerings, 70 IRE for example is way hot for Caucasian skin tones. I find 55 ire to be much more pleasing for slog3.
Disregard...when you turned the first light off you backed up my point, I much preferred your skin in that shot than the opening one. Personal preference I guess. Good video nonetheless!
I dont understand what if any the advantage is over histograms, zebras etc?
Great question! Zebras help with over exposure, but doesn’t help with skin-tone or shadow exposure. Histograms help with overall image exposure, but doesn’t give a detailed reading of exposure elements within the frame. False color allows you to get accurate exposure readings of every element within your frame, so you can know what needs adjusting within the frame to get the exact look you want.

you fail to explain how to use false color to expose a subject or talent. Neither expanding on how the color chart reflects exposing for skin tones etc... youve literally described what it is..
You’re absolutely right. Perhaps I’ll make a follow-up video showcasing how false color is used in an on-set environment. The purpose of this video is simply to explain what it is for folks who have never come across it or used it before.
