His deliberate effort to refer back to what he Shio says earlier in the conversation is a way to demonstrate his listening. Anyone can pretend to listen however being able to regurgitate what you heard proves it to the other person and allows them to go deeper and share more by being more comfortable. Top notch communication skills.

I keep watching this exact podcast because for some reason it brings me back to myself. It grounds me. It literally is saving my life. I hope to keep listening, learning, praying , and changing into a better man. Please send me your prayers . May god bless you all 🙏

bro, I'm 40 now and still a prisoner of myself, of my self-destructive behaviour patterns. I lost almost everything because of it 2 years ago. My life, my wife, my family, not myself. It took me almost a year to make changes and create a better life for myself. Around this time last year, I fell back into my old patterns and have been back in them ever since. I know what I have to do and should do and what I mustn't do and shouldn't do in order to move forward. BUT... I also know that everything will be okay. I can do it. I know it deep down inside. intuitively. You can do it too, bro. ❤🙏🙌

For me I learnt unhealed pain causes fear & confusion sometimes & can make us impatient & intolerant. One of the best bits of advice I ever got was "do something radical because what you've built isn't working for you". I was p!ssed off for a couple of years because I thought that was a disinterested response from a therapist. Fast forward a few years & I get it. Try to introduce yourself to new experiences but ones far-out to your norm. I spent so long trying to fit into the role other people had put me in & it was grim because I felt I was always failing. I was falling me & everyone else by not finding & being my true self. It's difficult picking through our layers & dropping what doesn't work for our best, but it's needed to feel ok, better than ok. Find yourself & love who you really are. Your children love you unconditionally so try to remember their wee hearts are filled with you & you're their hero. It's not easy but you're worth making changes for ✌️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We have all made mistakes and have hurt or harmed someone. But we can change our behavior. We can stop and be present. Before you speak listen to your intuition? Is what you are about to say true, is it kind, is it necessary and is it helpful? If the answer to ANY question is no, it should be left unsaid. I am at a complete loss for words. This interview was so incredibly moving. As a woman, not once - not ONCE - have I thought about the lack of societal support and resources men have when they’re in search of any type of rehabilitation, whether it’s drugs, alcohol, anger management, emotional/physical abuse, etc. Listening to this raw, untethered interview brought me to tears so many times because I am quick to judge men like Shia. I am quick to point fingers and write them off completely. But all people deserve second chances. Men like Shia deserve the opportunity to get to the root cause of their issues and do everything in their power to make amends. Shia - if you’re reading this, I want to thank you for sharing your truth with the world. It was the most profound interview I have ever listened to. To Jon - I am so grateful that you chose to give Shia this opportunity and be a true friend. You did not just talk the talk - you walked the walk. The world needs more people like you.

Yes! Thank you for pointing this out because that’s so profoundly important to realize. The problems men face are valid & resources need to be there so they’ll have the tools to gain an understanding on the root cause & gain the self awareness to change. I watched this documentary about people who facilitate the rehabilitation of domestic violence offenders & the utter vitriol & hate they get is shocking.
People want to just write these offenders off. Almost wanting to euthanise them. I understand that it’s difficult to separate the sin from the sinner but there should be room to actually offer support to those who want to change.
The most influential of people are usually the ones that were the biggest sinners. The most inspiring to those that struggle are the ones who also struggled but came out victorious. Imagine if we just wrote everyone of them off & subsequently also writing off the lives they were able to save when they did change.

Want to see a truly broken man? Talk to the guy at the bar, who sits alone staring at his drink which he pounds back to back every night. Waiting for some stranger to say something so he can get his pictures out of his kids who he no longer see's because his wife left him, took the kids, took half of everything he had, takes half his paycheck now. The only purpose the man ever had is now gone. Taken from him. And people don't think about that, they only think about the woman.

Interesting you guys see it that way. To me it came across totally different. From my perspective I saw what he also said to Shia:
He loves him, he wants to help & support him and he did with having him on his show. To me, actions speak much louder than words or looks he might give.
I could also sense that in his whole behavior while listening, he was totally empathic and felt with Shia.
So now that you saw something he might have hid from Shia or some hate, is it maybe that deep in yourself, there is something feeling like this? So you believe to see it in someone else?
Since this is only text and no voice, be aware I say this with the intention of support for you, since in my own experience I have many times seen & maybe disliked things in other people that actually where things in myself I needed to fix. So for this could be a hint for you where to look for further self-development. Where are all on our own way of development, but also we're in this together.
I hope my intention comes across the way it was meant.

As an addict in recovery I, too, have done some deplorable things to people I love. I am currently working on my step 4 and I have a year sobriety. This interview was so beautifully raw and inspirational. I love to see Shia taking accountability and making living amends for his past. I pray for you and your family Shia and if no one they told you they're proud of you today, I AM PROUD OF YOU ❤

I’ve watched this full two hour interview about 20 times. That’s no joke. This interview has saved my soul in the sense of comprehending redemption is a possibility. To see a man completely willing. Completely vulnerable. To an extent where he fears his true emotions will be manipulated as pity, even though anyone who really listened to this, knows pity is by far the last thing Shia wants. But even more than him not wanting pity, he doesn’t require it. Truly. Thats incredible. This interview spoke a dialect to my heart I’ve never known nor ever felt. I almost want to thank god for putting Shia through this in his life to be able to share his story and let us fellow men know, we can completey destroy our lives with mistakes that seem irredeemable but in taking that destructive feeling, using it to destroy the ego and break down the soul and completely rebuild it, is the very definition of self empowerment. Something we all must do. Love to everyone out there struggling mentally right now. You may feel isolated in your feelings but you’re not alone in the labyrinth. We’re all in it together. Thank you Jon and Shia. And thank you Jon for teaching me the importance of listening appropriately. Had this not been Jon, none of us would have been as enlightened as we are after seeing this. He gave Shia this platform knowing the consequences of what “it looks like” and he rolled the dice. I’ll always be thankful for that choice. To love within is to live without.

Here man. Coming on my next chapter in recovery from opiates. 2 yrs clean You really know you hit rock bottom when people start to perceive you like that. When my ex partner gave me that look of "you're full of shit" after telling them i wanted to quit i pretty much shut myself off entirely, thus only proving them right and giving myself a reason to continue. Nowadays, reflecting i realize it was mostly my fault. Now, i live with that fact but i try not to tear myself down. Only impedes progress, wallowing in self pity. Find the good in the bad.

I have a feeling a majority of American men relate at a core level to what Shia says here. What’s even more inspiring is Shia was placed/given the literal modern American dream for men today of fame and money, and the insight and rawness, seeing his purpose and content in walking away from it and serving other people from literally the most humble position he could find (by all American standards). I wish I had this type of enlightenment to know my path to that kind of love

I cried many times watching this and I will definitely be watching this again and again. Shia you now have a new fan, not of your art, but of the man and human you are. Thank you for opening my eyes and speaking so freely and truthfully. I’m sure so many more people can relate to you now than ever before.
