Good analysis, I'm 66 years old and have watched the franchise from the get go. Using TOS as a baseline you can probably apply this to all successive Star Treks but that's the nature of things such as improved visuals, better understanding of science, etc. That being said, in my opinion (and opinion are like assholes, everybodies got one) Discovery is the biggest offender (which can change in season two). I can and do enjoy all of them if I just disconnect some from the others (enjoy them as a stand alone). But for me some Trek is better than no Trek.

    • @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics

Thank you! And your right about opinions... The thing is TNG season 1 was horrible, and made plenty of mistakes so I dont want to judge ANY series from its 1st season alone... Hopefully, like TNG, it will grow in to something everyone can respect!

@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics .....You're right about TNG, Many of the problems with TNG were the results of laziness in post production (Phasers coming out of torpedo tubes and so forth) too much reused footage etc. But for me it was the feel. It felt like the Hotel Hilton in space. And I'm not alone in that perspective, it was a common criticism. But they were trying to make a statement about the state of affairs in the Federation at that time so there's that.

    • @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics
      @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Indeed, but the biggest point is it became one of the most beloved of the Trek Series, but if everyone had judged it after season 1 I doubt it would be even known today!

@@jamesmcgrath1952 I like your point about enjoying them by disconnecting from what came before. Perhaps that's why the newer series don't offend me as much as some of the more vocal critics. Criticize where there is legitimate criticism to be had (like lazy writing), but learn to enjoy it for what it is, not what you hoped it would be.

Absolutely, I have viewed the Star Trek series as 'stand alone's' also, in the same universe but basically as storytelling.
And when doing so there's no need at all to go nitpicking on dogma, timeline and canon.
For any series that take up the slack from a long break, I expected the first season to be ...tentative, before they find the format, character roles in place etc....
So I loved Enterprise, and as said in the vid - it certainly got rolling bigtime with season 3.
Yet when the gap get too wide, when the storytelling no longer is believable, even I have to take a step back from being a fanbuoy (spacebuoy?) ...erm, regardless.
Discovery and the Abrams films is not for me, though I did see the films since a close friend of mine insisted. So yes he love anything Star Trek, and so - taste do indeed differ. :)
But here's the basic reason for our endless comments and disagreements on what is 'twue' Start Trek, those who say that the story told should be incontrovertibly as told on TOS, you'll run into problems with every new take on ST.

5:15 I thought it was _brilliant_ how they portrayed the resentment of Humans toward the Vulcans--who stood in judgment over the Humans and withholding help because they always deemed them unready for space exploration and contact with other, alien civilizations. It was Humans as teenagers rebelling against their Vulcan parents. Any Star Trek fans who found this tension "cringeworthy" missed the point completely. The Vulcans were holding the Humans back, and the Humans wanted to prove themselves, even if they weren't quite ready to the Vulcans' satisfaction.

    • @Sarkkoth
      @Sarkkoth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@MinesAGuinness True. I think it gets away with it a bit because the stakes were really high with the extinction of the human race weighing in the balance and also that since this was pre-federation they didn't really have proper protocols for dealing with alien cultures yet. Archer doesn't start off torturing prisoners and threatening people, he's kind of beaten and driven into a corner as the Zhindi arc goes on and it shows that that for all their idealism and everything humanity has overcome the characters are still fallible humans.

Just what would they have shown, the escalstion of the Romulan War or a mostly behind the scenes of it? I Liked Enterprise, it could have continued. In part because it was more real: it wasn't "we're fine, and there will be problems but nothing we can't handle.." As a prequel it fit the caution it had in all its 'views', whereas the others were already in an established technological society, Enterprise was going into that society. Imagine the possibilities. But I'm not sure how much they could have done if they were in fact approaching the Romulan war, change the series like they did DS9 when it was the Dominion War?

    • @lanteanboy
      @lanteanboy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I do not believe it should have lasted 7 seasons, but I'm fairly certain they could have pulled one more season off. The main issue being that as L Kimberly said, the Romulan war was coming real soon. As in "following year" soon and it lasts pretty much until the formation of the UFP (which happens a few months after the war concludes). So, there really wasn't many episodes they could have done besides wartime episodes which would have gotten stale.
Now that I think about it, they don't really have a full season left.... they'd have about half a dozen episodes tops. But anyways..... they should not have shoehorned the TNG Holodeck experience in the finale, it should have been experienced "in real time"

Like saying to the fans of CGI/ACTION "let's watch this other action movie from some way back, it compares to ones you know!" While exciting after exciting NEW ACTION/CGI keeps coming out. I always liked that Enterprise delved a lot more into the non-human-looking species. But one thing to keep in mind is that TOS was far more limited (because of the budget) in what they could do makeup-wise, so it wasn't always as practical to have species like the Andorians on-screen (which is why the Klingons had smooth foreheads in the TOS epsiodes, and didn't get the forehead ridges until The Motion Picture; Gene Roddenberry often said he always intended for them to have the forehead ridges but never had the budget during the series to pull it off).

I really loved the Star Trek Enterprise series. It's always hard to do a prequel when there is so much time and technological change since the original series. Also it included the first physical and emotional contact between human and Vulcan. The alien probe attack on the east coast of the USA was very memorable, with I guess the 9/11 attacks still fresh in the consciousness at the time. It was also good to see the references to the original Enterprise sailing ship, and the flagship aircraft carrier of the US Navy in the captain's quarters. It was also the first Star Trek series to feature a theme song with lyrics.

Georffrey Stevens > It was also the first Star Trek series to feature a theme song with lyrics.
Actually ... IT WASN'T! Imagine my shock & disbelief when, as a teenager in the 1980s, I discovered a songbook entirely devoted 2 theme songs from movies & TV shows, complete with the original lyrics -- including the musical theme 2 the classic Star Trek series!
It turns out that Star Trek's iconic music was merely the instrumental (sans lyrics) version, while the original version w/ sung lyrics was either never recorded or didn't get the green light 4 the TV-aired broadcasts. (This apparently wasn't unique: the theme 2 the 1970s-early-1980s reboot of Buck Rogers had lyrics as well, but were only used 4 the closing theme 2 maybe 1 or a few episodes during season 1 -- after that, they only used the instrumental version.)
So what were the Star Trek theme's lyrics? After all this time, I can only remember the lyrics mentioning falling in love w/ a beautiful, female green-skinned alien from ... some other planet. (No, seriously!)

This view comes from a 65 year old veteran Star Trek watcher, starting from the very first 1966 episodes (including the "pre episodes" with Jeffrey Hunter and the awkward Leonard Nimoy's proto Spock) in the original series.
I've seen every TOS, TNG, & Voyager, although still have not completed DS-9 which I kind of lost interest in but look forward to finishing up. I loved TOS, TNG and Star Trek Enterprise so much to become one of those people you hate to sit next to because I know & might blurt out every single line of dialogue.
I may be in the minority, but to me Star Trek Enterprise was the best & most enjoyable of them all. It wrapped up everything together perfectly, and that 4th and prematurely final season was masterful. The writers & the actors were on fire. Whether it was the short sightedness of the TV executives and/or poisoned biases of the fans of prior series, I don't know or care. It was a shame it didn't continue another few years like the other series.

While I'm not as old, only 34, I agree whole heartedly. I did a 5 year stint in Japan and decided to binge star trek. I went through the whole damn series of series over a few months. I started to get bored by the end of ds9 and Voyager was a slog. I found myself annoyed that the crews were running into the same issues over and over but not being able to deal with them in the same way for no real reason. Enterprise did the opposite. I felt like I was watching tng from the start again, completely fascinated by the stories and characters. I really do think that poisonous fan bases are more responsible for the death of many series than people are willing to admit. As someone who was not coloured be years and years of expectations I found myself a little more able to objectify each series. For the enterprise I think being released exactly as is 5 years later could have made all the difference.

I'm watching through Enterprise right now with my wife, and considering we've been watching all of Trek, Enterprise is really good, even in season 1. I appreciate the tighter inter-episode cohesion, how there's episodes referencing more episodes, how they do not forget things that had happened only episodes ago and if anything actively strove to interweave them into the greater narrative. The only other ST show that tried to do anything similar was DS9, but this is a lot smoother a process, you can tell the people making DS9 were just learning how to do longer, multi-episode plot arcs.
Honestly, my favorite SF TV show is Babylon 5 bc of the integrated plot arcs, how there were basically no "filler" or oneoff episodes. While ST can't fully do that (bc if that was done it wouldn't quite be ST anymore), I appreciate the more robust worldbuilding that resulted when they tried to mimic elements of what B5 did. And if I love Enterprise now, I sure as heck am going to love Season 3 and 4!

See the thing with the Enterprise ship design I can appreciate the effort put into solving the prequel conundrum. They had to make a new ship with new graphics look old, and I honestly think they did a good job. By making it look and feel like a RL modern warship, with some updated features, but without a lot of the comforts of the TOS or later eras, it felt to me like what an earth spaceship would look like, and making the transition to TOS not feel too jarring, since it was made with an entirely different design philosophies by a lot of different races with different design philosophies influencing each other. Discovery, on the other hand, doesn't feel like it has made the same effort. They have simply updated the graphics to a modern aesthetic without any regard for why there is so much design disparity. While Enterprise felt like a good faith effort to integrate a prequel in the best way they could at the time, Discovery just felt like they wanted to use their special effects budget and assets taken from the JJ-verse. It doesn't feel like the same care or effort was put in, and that's why it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe I'm missing something crucial that makes it all make sense, but as of now I'm just not feeling the love of Trek in the new series, the respect for what came before, or the care and dedication that needs to go into making a good show. Who knows, maybe time will tell, but I'm not holding my breath at present.

It looks great (and not overdone like the kelvin movies or STD), its characters are far more relatable and fleshed out, most episodes dare to not solve some mysteries (remember the shroomies?), and I think the Temporal Cold War is the greatest idea in the history of sci-fi. I'd actually watch a series showing TCW at all its fronts. Finally, its humor puts the Orville to shame. Sure, there are a few episodes I just skip, but that's true for every series (especially TOS, it's the same 5-6 plots repeated over and over again).

Everything seems more genuine although the Voyager's time is more diplomatic and civilized in nature (Federation). During the Enterprise time the crew was more relateable to someone who is naive about what was out there. They actually seemed more like us today if we were now venturing into space.

I enjoyed Enterprise. The first two seasons were rough but that's par for the course. I can't think of a single Trek series that didn't struggle the first couple seasons. Voyager lasted 3 seasons longer than it deserved, imo while Enterprise was cut at least 2 seasons short when it was just getting good. Also, I think there was Trek burnout at that point. TNG and DS9 ran back to back for a good two or three years before TNG ended its 7 season run and then Voyager immediately followed on the heels of DS9 with Enterprise only a year or two after that.
TNG and DS9 was about world building. Enterprise was mostly about establishing and justifying Starfleet and the Federation's well-earned existence.
    Pros-
We got to see smaller scale stories early on.
Established how Starfleet obtained some of the established tech from TOS and beyond, like Phasers, Shields and Photon Torpedos.
Expanded the culture of the Vulcans and especially Andorians- Shran
A much smaller, enclosed ship which helped to reinforce the tightness and smaller scope of Enterprise as a series.
    Cons-
None of the new enemies that were encountered in Enterprise were particularly memorable, the Xindi(bad ones) and the Suliban don't quite hold up like the Cardassians or Dominion as far as newer threats go. Still better than Voyager's Hirogan and Kazon.
    The Temporal Cold War
Scott Bakula's hammyness. I like Scott Bakula and thought he made a good Archer but there were a lot of cringe-inducing scenes when he'd get up on that righteous pedestal.
    Not enough Shran
I actually kind of like that Captain Archer held some prejudice toward the Vulcans. His father's research in warp drive was held back by the Vulcan council so Archer had underlying reasons for his prejudice but it also humanizes the character. Archer wasn't a saint and definitely had his flaws.

Cut to 10 years later and we in the real world are already using touch screen panels almost exclusively. We already have many of the capabilities they had in tng computer wise and by our enterprise era it will no doubt seem primitive in the extreme to our ancestors. TOS will be laughably primitive by that time in a visual sense at the very least. I think people underestimate how far we can go in a short amount of time. The more advanced we get the faster technology advances so we can achieve the impossible well before any logical human estimation can guess at. In any sense things have to change in our science fiction cannon for it to remain relevant, let alone believable. The tech in enterprise was more advanced in some ways and less in others compared to TOS, but it's aesthetic is more in line with current technology of the time it was made. They took that aesthetic and technology ten times further with discovery and it's probably the most accurate representation yet for all we know. If they go along with the plans for the Picard series and possible ds9 return I expect we'll see much of the same. I don't see a problem with that really and I'm a big time trek fan.

What I really liked about Star Trek: Enterprise was that they tried to explain a lot of stuff even though it is completely made up and arbitrary and not taking it as granted which was very suitable considering that this was a prequel where a lot of the common start trek technologies are introduced one after another. I also liked the characters very much. The whole rationality vs intuition debate which was presented in form of the Vulcans and T'Pol specifically was great, too (very philosophical in this respect imo). However, the intro and especially the intro song are so annoying , I hate it xD

You are very wise my friend and i agree with what you said, i too dismissed Enterprise when it aired as another cash in on the Star Trek franchise and did not watch it on tv at the time.
I came to it about 5 years ago on DVD when i decided to buy season one thinking well the box set cost me about £ 12 so if its rubbish well i have lost very little.
After getting off to a slow start especially with the pilot episode ( How any Star Trek ever got green lit on their pilot shows is a mystery to me) i began to quite enjoy it. I bought the remaining seasons knowing i would not be dissapointed, and at the end i was sad that the series had not gone on to say 7 seasons and explored some of the making of the federation and Star Fleet in greater detail. Now i except it as part of the Star Trek universe more easily than say Discovery or the Kelvin time line movies so much so that in 2016 when my wife and i got married we used Enterprise them as our wedding tune.
Thank you for a great analysis.

I disagree, for two main reasons:
First: In 2019, it's getting more and more difficult to set a show in the future that has such limited technology. A LOT has changed since the 1960s (TOS) and the 1980s (TNG) and to be honest, the entire concept of a spaceship operated by people the way a naval vessel of the mid-20th century is operated (with captains, helmsmen, etc) is pretty much absurd at this point. It's 200 years earlier than the settings of these shows and we already have self-driving cars, for crying out loud. It's getting more and more ridiculous to pretend that humans, rather than AI, would be operating spaceships in the 2300s. But that's the narrative world that has been carved out thus far, and that's what we're stuck with. That said, any narrative attempts to push the timeline out any further but still have a "bridge crew" model will just get sillier and sillier. At least by setting a show as a prequel it's still possible to suspend disbelief about that sort of stuff because it has already been established. But setting a show in another century post-TNG (the way TNG was a century post-TOS) would require some sort of acknowledgment of what we now know about tech advances. Making Discovery a prequel is the best narrative way to get around that.
Then there are the practical considerations of studios and platforms like Netflix being willing to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in a new show. Discovery must be one of the most expensive shows ever made, and investors want to see a return on their investment. I know a lot of the fans think they own Star Trek and that the studios and networks should make a show that appeals to the hardest-core of the hardcore fans, but from a financial standpoint that's a non-starter. The Trek series and films (pre-Kelvin) were losing audiences year over year. After the death of Enterprise, no one wanted to invest the money in yet another show that was based on the same basic premise ("The Weekly Adventures of the Bridge Crew") but with yet more new, unknown characters, because the evidence was clear that this model was providing diminishing returns. From a financial standpoint, the studios had to find ideas that would not just pull in people that already liked the show, but would also draw a broader audience. And the best way to do that was with familiarity. Whether the hardcore fans like it or not, the Kelvin-verse reboot made a hell of a lot more money than the last couple of TNG-cast movies. And that is the same thinking behind setting Discovery as a p[requel to the Kirk-era. It allows them a lot of creative freedom to fill in the gaps between the Enterprise-series timeframe and the TOS timeframe, while giving casual viewers and potential fans something familiar to latch on to in terms of the "Spock's sister" concept. I thought it was a brilliant premise, an have enjoyed the hell out of the fresh start for a universe that was growing increasingly stale. Hopefully, over time, more of the hardcore fans people will embrace the show; I am just grayeful to have a Trek show to be excited about again.

It became the serialized drama Trek needed. If anything, it was Voyager that had veered so far off its original concept. By season 4, I was absolutely loving the show and was sad it got cancelled, however, I still think the show didn't do too bad. We got some really good episodes, even in the first 2 seasons, but especially in season 4, so I can't complain too much. My only real big complaint about the show was the lousy final episode and the fact that we never got to see the Earth/Romulan War before the show got axed. But overall, I really liked the show. My dad wasn't a big fan of the show. But he never really gave the show a chance. He seen an episode here and there, but that was it. I tried so hard to get him into the show, but he simply wouldn't watch it. Recently he had started to watch the show simply because he was getting tired of watching the same old Trek over and over. It wasn't long before he told me that he was sorry he never gave the show a chance until now. He really liked it, and a lot of the episodes in seasons 3 & 4 and even a couple in seasons 1 & 2, he said he thought they were the best Star Trek episodes he had ever seen. He's now a big fan of the show like I am.

Kirks ship looks more ...efficient. Overall i am sad that Enterprise is so often made the " whipping boy" of the trek franchise by ,lets say" overzealous and somewhat intolerant" fans. Outstanding assessment of the changes to the style of television and audiences. Neigh-sayers of any new Trek show fail to understand the need to adapt and modernise to a changing audience. Trek has done that, and Discovery is its current iteration. It is Star Trek written for a 21st Centauri audience, not one from the mid 60s. It must change, modernise and adapt- and it continues to do so. I look forward to seeing how Trek continues to adapt to a changing audience (while giving acknowledgement its origins )

I subscribed because of your video about the Webster sitcom crossover.
A sitcom I'd never heard of.

I really enjoyed the art style of Enterprise, the ship felt right, but either way we were going to have issues with the redesign compared to Tos. I would have hoped that it touched upon the Romulan war.

I also would love to have seen the upgraded version of Enterprise that was planned for the next season--moving closer to the designs seen in the next century. And the inclusion of the Kzinti lol

I wonder when they'd have added more ship designs, like the Deadalaes (?) Class or steps toward it.

I like Star Trek Enterprise a lot and was very unhappy the show was canceled. Here is why. The show takes place in the years 2151-2155. But if the show would have stay on the next year would have been 2156. And what happened in 2156??The Earth - Romulan War started(2156-2160). I figured that is what had to come next.I want my United Earth and Romulan Star Empire War Damn it. O well. What are you going to do.

@@lkimberly2064 Well the whole third season was all most entirely about the Xindi war. So it could have taken up a large part of what would have been the 5th. season. If not all of it. I think the trick would have been. Like I'm sure you know. In the Balance of Terror( is my all time favorite Ep. bar none)Mr Spock said. No human, Romulan or ally has ever seen the other. That would have been the hard bit to get around.

    • @ThreadBomb

@@schristy3637 Yes, that infamous line from Balance of Terror, which was only there so Kirk could tell off a crewman for being racist to Spock, and which has controlled so much of the canon ever since. They did partly address this in Enterprise season 4, when we saw the Romulans using remote-controlled ships. The presence of the Romulan slave race, the Remans (introduced in Nemesis and seen in Enterprise), could also have been a way to get around this. We could have seen drone ships carrying hapless Reman soldiers into battle with no hope of return. Lots of dramatic potential there.

When it was on air I disliked it just because of the theme song - it simply didn't sound like Star Trek. A few months ago I was watching all seasons of it on Netflix. I was enjoying it and it is actually a great show that seems to have ended too soon.

I couldn't get into Enterprise when it was on the air because I kept waiting for Captain Archer to "Jump" into his next body. I couldn't disconnect him from Quantum Leap. A couple of years after the show had ended, I was able to get past that and found that I thoroughly enjoyed the show. And the NX-01 is the best looking ship out of the whole Trek universe.

It got even harder to do in that one episode that had Dean Stockwell as a guest star. You were expecting him to tell Archer what body he leaped into this time. :)

For me, this was the best since TOS. It went back to the big three formula, and a little bit of the bickersons. All three of the leads were great, and Scott Bakula got us back to having a down to earth Captain you could relate to. Picard (master thespian, I shall now "act" for you), Sisko (snooze), and Janeway (naptime) collectively couldn't bring the same amount of raw emotion for me as T'Pol and Tripp in their scene dealing with funeral arrangements for Elizabeth. Jolene Blalock's ability to bring her emotions right up to the surface, trying to conceal them, and Connor's openly weeping, the grasping of each other's hands at the end, not too much dialogue, that quality of storytelling deserved a few more seasons.

I don't mind Enterprise, I like that it bought some depth to the Vulcan race. I liked that it was not a perfect universe like TNG. but it had too many cast members, who had interesting backstories, that bought nothing to any episode. if there was no Lt Reed, Mayweather or ensign Sato, would the show be any different?
