      GTA V is about what happens after you discover that lie and the empty feeling that you get realizing all the sacrifices you made to make it only to find a fake, shatter glass "perfect life".

      GTA IV was the last GTA with substance. I almost felt disillusioned for Niko, coming for a better life but having to do so much killing and realizing he will never find peace, put that in with that the 0 saturation of Liberty City and its just depressing. What a fantastic game, deserves a modern remake in the future.

    To be honest GTA has always been linear but the old games have been better in that regard, for example in San Andreas if a enemy spot you in a stealth mission it isn't an insta-mission fail or you can be miles away from the mission and still it won't fail the mission (only if you don't have a partner).
    Is less intuitive yes, but it gives you the freedom to do whatever you want

    • @themadtitan7603
      @themadtitan7603 3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      I wish they'd go back to GTA III's mission structure just more refined, in that game it was just go there and take out a target and you're free to approach the objective more freely rather failing because you didn't kill him/her in the way R* intended you to.

      GTA is probably one of the most non linear games in the world. I have no idea what you guys are talking about. There are like thousand of different ways you can pass certain missions in San Andreas. GTA 5 is more linear and scripted than the old 3D era games yes, but you can still do a lot of stuff. Compared to other open world games like Mafia or Watch Dogs, GTA is extremely non linear.

    Outside of Los Santos (Which is smaller than Liberty City) We get a small desert and country town, a military base and another small town near a homeless shelter. Then some random islands and a massive lake, desert and countryside with nothing really in it, except a dam near Los Santos. GTA5's map always felt overly stretched out, full of empty countryside and desert with very few buildings Inbetween. You go online and nobody explores the country (because it's dull) all that land is just there to artificially bloat the map. It feels like a con or a scam. Yeah, it's the biggest map in gaming, but most of it is pointless...

You plan a heist, but don't actually carry out the heist, and then drive to a safe location. In turn this makes the game feel empty. Very poorly done. I think it's Rockstars worse game to date.

      That's the one game that genuinely is not for kids. I mean like it actively repels them. Kids play for the dumb tomfoolery like in Vice City, Sna Andreas or even 5. But 4 just doesn't have that 'amusement park' like feel. It's like a kid watching Joker. The R-rating aside, he would really be bored/traumatized and would hate it. Only later on as a more wiser person would he understand what actually the game or movie was about. And THAT'S the moment of realisation of true brilliance.
      I hated GTA 4 and Niko when I was a kid too. Only later do I realise what the game was supposed to be.

    This video perfectly explains my feelings towards Rockstar as a whole since 2012. As someone whose played every GTA after 2001 in their prime with even hundreds of hours in Grand Theft Auto 4 Multiplayer I was extremely disappointed with GTA 5 after the 2nd day of its release in 2013. Prior to release I read every single official article and the game was no where as in depth as they made it out to seem prior to release. The game was extremely short with 69 missions. I don’t even think i ever finished ANY Grand Theft Auto in just two sittings. Not even the GTAs on the PlayStation Portable. It’s unfortunate that this game forever changed the impression of this series due to it being so popular for almost a decade. Kids will hold this game as a standard for future Grand Theft Autos because thats all they ever knew. Also at 3:16 Big smokes order wasn’t that big he was the one ordering for everyone in the car. The joke was after he put everyone’s order in he got a number 7 then proceeded to get two number 45s which causes everyone to look at him. But his fatass ate everyone’s food instead of shooting because he probably was apart of the setup.

    Agreed. I had huge fun playing the story and loved the open world possibilities, but it could have been significantly better very easily. For example, I loved Maude's missions, they were my favourite as she just gave you a photo of a house or some other small location and you had to figure where on the map that was. It was quite a contrast to most of the other missions which just told you where to go.
    And COMPLETELY agree with GTAO now being some sci-fi looney tunes mess. After not playing GTAO for a couple years, then a year ago tried to get back into - played it once, haven't touched it again.

    I was glad to see you showed NakeyJakey's video on how Rockstar's game design is outdated. That is one of my favorite videos that I point people to as an explanation for why RDR2 disappointed me from a gameplay perspective (loved the story though). Too much 'realism' and not enough fun things to do outside of the linear story missions. I am concerned for the future of Rockstar's titles and I truly hope they are listening to all of this criticism.

    • @ahrlj24
      @ahrlj24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I hope not. I want linear mission design in Rockstar Games. If you want free mission design then go play Watch Dogs Legion or Ubisoft games. If free mission design is your blueprint then Ubisoft should be your favorite publisher. Free mission design lacks creativity and innovation. It’s lazy, repetitive and tedious. Go here and clear this camp. GTA V missions are varied, engaging. That’s why it sells way more than Watch Dogs.

    • @AJMarraffa
      @AJMarraffa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@ahrlj24 I think you misinterpreted what I was getting at. I didn’t mention free mission design at all. I have my own issues with Ubisofts titles and the way they implement free mission design. I like the cinematic story missions in rockstar games, but I do think that the missions should allow players try and solve problems in their own way and not result in an immediate “mission failed” if you try to be creative. You can definitely have the objective guides for Rockstar’s way to do the mission and just not force the player to follow them, I feel like that would be a good way to handle it. But my main issues with RDR2 lie in gameplay mechanics like excessive travel times without RDR1’s fast travel system, hunting being way too perfectionist to be fun considering how long it takes to track down a 3 star animal of the particular animal you need, camp upgrades not serving a purpose to the flow of the story in any way, not being able to travel to the west as Arthur, etc. I also didn’t like how there really were not enough side missions/side characters to fill the massive open world space in each chapter, I think a more condensed map like RDR1 would have worked better.

    My main problem with gta 5's story is it's massive plot holes that make no sense whatsoever
    For example Franklin just automatically becomes a part of Michael's life after he breaks into his house and steals his son's car then comes asking for a beer, in reality somebody like Michael would've told him to get lost.
    Another thing that doesn't make sense is how Michael came to the conclusion that a tennis coach could afford a 2 million dollar house in the hills, you can't even say that he was pissed off so he wasn't thinking straight because he literally says he already knew that the guy lived up in the hills somewhere, of all people how did he think a dude who hits balls for a living could afford a hillside mansion, then again it was Michael who used a line that he's known for by people who he didn't get confirmation were dead, to intimidate a witness to an armed robbery that he left alive, Michael was actively trying to prolong the plot, and the whole time afterwards he complains about how horrible his life got which he also directs towards Trevor and the FIB when really he's ultimately the reason for all of his problems, what a hypocrite🤦‍♂️.
    Moving on, the second biggest plot hole in the story is how Trevor found Michael, several red flags popped up with this entire part, first off Trevor finding out Michael was alive because he overheard a conversation on the news while he was in the middle of fucking someone over the counter just felt forced as hell, and the fact that he sent Wade of all people instead of Ron to go find Michael and he somehow easily found him made the entire thing even more forced, No seriously, he sent the dumbest character in the game to go find someone in a big ass city where anybody can have the same name and alias, and it's beyond me how he was somehow smart enough to look through the phone directory and found someone who matches Michael's description despite not having the name he was looking for, and also you would think that someone who's currently being hidden by the Government would be a little more hard to find than just looking through a phone directory, and to top it all off Trevor somehow automatically knew Michael's address and that he was living in a mansion, like Wade didn't even give him any directions or anything he just knew where to go right off the bat.
    This whole segment was goofy as hell and was the most forced part of the game just to move the plot forward, and what makes it all the more forced is that Trevor just so happened to be living in a small town that's right next to city where Michael was at, I'd understand if it was Liberty City, Vice City anywhere else, no they put him in a place right next to where Michael was living, even tho the story made a point that Trevor despised everything about Los Santos even calling it the city of shitheads, yet he was living right next to said shit hole for the last 10 years and never visited once.
    On the topic of Trevor finding out shit about Michael it doesn't make a whole lot of sense how he figured out Brad was dead, like seriously the shit came right out of left field and wasn't even hinted at him starting to find out about it before hand, it also doesn't make sense how he thought Brad was writing letters to him from a prison cell, yes it was bound to happen but had little build up, and then there's the cliche of them both arriving to North Yankton at the same time and Michael walks up to Trevor as he's digging the grave up, it should've taken Michael alot longer to get north Yankton due to having to get a flight and waiting to get on the plane and such unlike Trevor where he already had a free plane available.
    Meanwhile during this whole confrontation the Triads have some of their guys boarding the plane Michael was on to get to North Yankton as well so they can ambush them both, so let me get this straight, in game lore it's been weeks maybe even over a month since Trevor killed the O'Neil Brother's and fucked up with the Triads' business expansion plan, why did they not do anything to him prior to this, you're telling me they deadass waited until they went to another state which they conveniently had connections at to try and kill Trevor, instead of trying to kill Trevor sooner they waited basically a month to do anything to him, you could say that the FBI was watching over Trevor when he came to Los Santos, okay that still doesn't stop them from trying to kill him the moment he took action against the O'Neil brother's before he even thought about going to LS, also why did they wait until they left the state to try and ambush them, they could've simply had a squad of guys storm Michael's house and kill or kidnap them both and get a two for one deal, Or already have some have some guys waiting at Trevor's airfield so when he gets there they can get him that way, instead they made things harder for themselves just to create more drama.
    Now on to The biggest plot hole, which is that Steve Haines and Merryweather don't get taken to court for all the shit that they've did that were even witnessed, in the mission the wrap up the IAA ambushes Michael and Steve saying that they've finally caught them, then some rival FIB team storms in that were working for agent Sanchez who sold out Steve, then Merryweather comes in and joins the party resulting in one massive shootout, with all this, just how in the hell did they not get held accountable for anything at all, it would've been more realistic if merryweather was on the verge of getting shut down for all the shit that they've did in public, in secret and over seas, they've gotten themselves involved in countless shootouts even with two government agencies twice and nothing happens to them. On the matter of Steve in the final mission he's in the middle of recording his TV show, yet like I said before got into a shootout with the IAA and before that he shot another agent right in front of them and other agents that he was sold out to, so with all of this if Lester was able to track him down so easily then why wasn't he at the moment being hunted down by every cop in LS?
    It would've made the final mission alot more interesting if him and merryweather were taken to court for all the chaos they've caused like I said and he gets released due to his FIB status which causes LS to go into a riot, then after that it would've been a three way war between him, merryweather and Devin Weston, and the main 3 protagonists, and after finishing off merryweather they kill stretch and Wei cheng and then hunt down Devin and Steve before he gets to the airport to flee the country, kind of like San andreas except with extra steps and it could've been alot more epic, No that didn't happen, instead we got the anticlimactic ending where we push Devin off a cliff.
    And then there's the contract dlc in online where it's canonized that Franklin is married to Tanisha, despite her getting married to another man right after the end of main story, so you're telling me that he stopped her from getting married somehow, what did he come to the wedding and beat her brain surgeon or lawyers ass in front of her, and then she kissed him on the spot and instead married a man she didn't even like? Or did he get on his knees and beg for her to be with him like the simp he was fronting as, no seriously wtf is this bullshit??? The story made a point that she didn't want to be with Franklin because he was a murderer and she was getting married to somebody better, how in the fuck did she change her mind by game lore in the matter of a day, just when I thought the story couldn't get any more unrealistic and cliche they hit us with this.
    I won't talk about the other two endings cause online already confirmed those two not to be canon.
    All in all It's hard to just play through the game and look past all these easily noticeable story inconsistencies, and if you really stop to look at it everything else will quickly reveal itself, the direction they went in trying to make this into a fast paced Hollywood movie with a whole lot of satire was not a good idea since they left a shit ton of plot holes along the way, and it really seems like they making up alot of shit as they went also forgetting shit and overshadowing characters easily noticeable with the main ones Franklin specifically, he doesn't truly become important until the very end of the game, rendering the entire story mediocre at best.

    • @GeckoZob
      @GeckoZob ปีที่แล้ว +16

      These are good takes but i disagree with some of them:
      -The first take is a bit weird, because even in repossesion Micheal is impressed (in a negative way) at how Docile Franklin is, i know Micheal is sometimes a hypocritical selfish guy, but Micheal very clearly has some sort of pity for the guy, "You seem like a good kid". Sometimes just shit happens
      -The fact that Micheal thought the tennis coach lived in a mansion is completely justifiable, and Dr.Friedlander explained this the best, at the end of the game, there is a report saying that Micheal has occasionnal outbursts of violence. He was not just pissed off, he was going insane. (And Franklin talks about that in their dialogue). Moreover, i think that using his iconic phrase during the robbery makes sense, Micheal just did not consider the consequences of his actions, you cant expect characters to be smart every time, they can make mistakes (Listen to the dialogue between Dave and Micheal at the end of the First score).
      -The take about Trevor is imo partially right, i can totally understand why you would think the part about finding Micheal is ridiculous, however, not only did they not go to his house in the first place (they went in Floyd's house), but there is plenty of moments when Wade could have told the address to Trevor (Off camera obviously), just replay the missions and you will see.
      -I completely disagree with your take on the distances between each cities. If you look at the phone in the game, time passes much quicker than it does in real life (2 seconds for 1 minute), and for a reason. Rockstar cant make a 10000km² where every place is reproduced in 1/1. Everything is distorded so it is more playable. (The distance between blaine county and Los Santos is actually much bigger than you might think)
      -You can say that Micheal and Trevor arriving at the same time at the graveyard is cliche, but to be fair, not only the writing is fantastic and the little sound effects like the reverb to mimic Micheal going through his memories, or even the mission quest saying "Go to your grave", is amazing. Nevertheless, it makes sense, Micheal waits for a plane, but Trevor on the other hand had to make a much bigger distance to travel since he went back to Blaine county. (I didnt even mention that Trevor was already there for like an hour+ since he was digging)
      -Triads knew something. Trevor is a fricking menace lmao, they know he killed about 30 armed guys and exploded their house like it was nothing, so a direct attack was probably not a good idea, they waited for a safe opportunity and obviously they saw it when they moved to an other state, far away from any government group like the FIB in a dark and silent place like the North Yankton's graveyard. In my opinion this is not far fetched (Not to mention that One month is reasonably long, reacting before Trevor goes to Los Santos would have been useless precipitation).
      -Tanisha going back with Franklin just makes sense, she loved him but couldn't do anything because he was too dangerous with his actions. However, Franklin became 5 to 10 years later a CEO of a big corporation. Of course we dont know the details behind the scenes of why Tanisha left her husband in the first place, but everything is possible at that point.
      -Lastly, why does Steve Haines and Merryweather were fine even after what happened after all of these (i admit), very public and awful events.
      Easy:
      Money and corruption, the world of GTA is a whole satire of The United States, showing that even guys commiting atrocities in the background are doing fine because they are very important or very wealthy. Steve Haines litteraly has a police protection on the Third way. (Its the only character in the third way that will get you wanted levels if you kill him).
      Despite that, i have to admit the story is not perfect.
      I think it would have been better if the game had chapters or episodes, which maybe explains why RDR2 actually has chapters.
      I do believe some parts of the game could have been more ... developed.
      It obviously has the problem many Rockstar's games have, you almost always go to a place with someone (directly or with a telephone), speak to them about god knows what, you arrive, usually kill some peoples, and then go out with usually an other pound of dialogue.
      The game is not perfect, but i do believe the story is great and very detailed, and is very representative of the spirit of GTA. (Although GTA IV's story is obviously better)

When you compare s brand new release like CDPRs Cyberpunk, you can easily tell how shallow and absolutely boring an open world can be, I spent hours just customizing my cars and crusing around lossantons when I get stopped by a stranger in need, leading me to an entirely different adventure.

    Kinda ironic that the devs team that gives players so much freedom from the get-go, also creates very linear and restrictive missions. But nevertheless, i spent 100+ hours replaying IV story, and explored entire SA for 100% completion.
    With V however, it's just meh to me. Sure the graphic is great and the gameplay is much smoother, but after its story completion, i have no interest in replaying it nor doing any side activity, and i feel that its large map was created for the sake of being large so exploring it feels like a chore if anything.

And yea Michael was the easier one to hate because of how bi-polar he is which we could've just gotten with Trevor; but Franklin had 1 track missions that only mattered when the heist or interaction with another character happened. I actually rather enjoyed the story mode. I felt it fit the times when it dropped pretty well. Though I do agree the world could have been much more immersive. It was needlessly large, and the only thing it really was for was to create different situations when running from the cops that definitely need an improvement. I like how the AI got smarter and much more aggressive compared to IV, but what the hell is the point of buying a silencer for your guns if you’re going around popping people quietly and the cops automatically and magically know where you’re hidden? Same for stealth killing and such. The whole point of those styles is discretion, and the system completely defeats the purpose. As for GTA Online, I had some friends that were very into it, but it’s just another grindy MMO at this point. I got to level 80 on my PS3 run, but when I came back years later to find that the PS3 servers are now gone, and my opportunity to transfer to PS4 was gone, I never got past Level 10. Too many trolls, too many cheaters, too many pisspoor kids. Not worth the time.

      Nah the ai sucks ass in gta v, like the more I played gta v the shit gradually got worse and worse to outright annoying and problematic, I really hate how if you snipe someone from far away like up on a building somewhere or specifically at Franklin’s house the police automatically know where to find you even if the sniper you used is equipped with a suppressor, and it literally takes the whole meaning out of a suppressor like why implement it into the game if the cops immediately get contacted? also if you snipe a enemy near some more of them they automatically know where you’re at like wtf. Another thing I hate is how your trying to hide from the cops in a far away area from where you committed a crime the cops somehow think to search the area that you’re in despite not ever being told anything about us being there. another example which earned this games ai to be the absolute worst which is the npc’s, when your trying to flee from the cops the npc’s just blatantly crash into you and then become immovable objects because they die from impact, you don’t even have to tap them or anything if they get touched they’re hp drops to fucking zero and then they’re car will either not move or drive all by itself, also heads up make sure you don’t try to flee from the cops on a motorcycle because if you di they will run you over, they will fucking crush you. Also for some reason if you try to get away from the cops in a cop car then the tires either immediately get shot out or are already fucked up/off the hinges, but somehow the cops themselves are fucking racers and no matter how much damage you do to they’re car they will always be faster, stronger, and ultimately annoying which makes the whole experience just fucking irritating. When people started complaining about the ai in gta 4 being too easy Rockstar took it to a whole over level hell that is an understatement they went over the top with the shit, they really made sure we wouldn’t have fun with this games ai, but somehow in missions whenever you need to get away from some enemies or even the cops none of the shit I listed happens and it’s just like “grand theft auto wtf??”, maybe this is a lesson not to complain about shit, maybe it was a blessing gta 4’s ai wasn’t as bad because rockstar proved that they can fuck up anything for us if we bitch and complain about it too much.

    Gta 3 starts off with you being shot in the face by your own girlfriend and ends with you killing her and then killing a lady you just saved because she talked to much.
    Liberty city stories your own mother calls a hit on you because you didn't want anything to do with the mafia and the hit only gets called off after you've murdered thousands people and bomb up an entire city block for the mob.
    Vice city stories you get dishonorably discharged from the military because you were holding on to drugs that were for your sergeant which he also forced you to sell.
    Vice city the brother (lance) of the character you played in vice City stories gets his brother killed and a bad drug deal after the end of vice City stories he promised to stop getting his brother involved with moving drugs. He then goes on to sell you out to mafia boss that came to visit you that you plotted it to kill , even though you literally spent the entire game helping lance out .

    For me personally, games like GTA stop being fun when I try reading into it like a book instead of just playing it like a game. They told the story they wanna tell through the cutscenes and dialogue and did a good job doing it. You've got missions that are like Max Payne 3 levels but with the GTA formula, and you've still got the entirety of Los Santo's open world to explore and cause chaos in. I think the reason the world feels empty is because WE are getting older and we've already done this countless times in San Andreas as kids, it doesn't seem as new anymore especially after playing so many other games like mafia, saints row etc. Rockstar has to please 3 generations of VERY different audiences with 1 game, and I think they pulled it off.
    Still think they should've made manhunt 3 instead tho.

      That's what I was thinking. Where oh where is Manhunt 3? Oh that's right we care too much about sipping the GTA Online milk and hurting feelings too much for that game to come out. That's why a part of me thinks that GTA 6 will probably be even worst than GTA V. The fun aspect of the game is being taken away from us. They want to focus on realism but yet if you shoot someone with a shotgun in the head in GTA V and GTA IV, it's so hypocritically unrealistic(unlike in games like GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, and most currently Red Dead Redemption 2), What's happened to you Rockstar lol. Also RDR and RDR2's ending and overall story were great because Arthur and John are characters you actually could laugh and cry with together, their deaths were both really sad. Even when Big Smoke died in San Andreas, I nearly wanted to tear up. This video needed to be made. Don't get me wrong, there are some things I do like about GTA V but it is so hypocritical and makes you want to facepalm so hard.

      No it's gta 3 for the protagonist alone. He had so much emotion

    So funny that the linear nature of GTA V missions is why DarkViperAU hates RDR2, but GTAV has the same level of being linear just with a weaker story to tell to justify it.

    Hot take but GTA San Andreas is just so overrated at this point. It's good but it's not THAT good.
    edit: Vice City and IV were better

    I don't think that 5 does characters well at all actually. Maybe I'm biased because 4 is my favorite one bur Niko is a good protagonist. He's a victim of trauma and all he knows how to do is be a criminal. He never had the option to be anything other then a criminal and because of that he's a self destructive nihilist. He finds in America that its all a lie. I feel like 4 honestly does rhe same things you think 5 does with the deconstruction of the American excess but it's done differently. From the perspective of an outsider. Just by merit of being born in America, 5's protagonists have more genuine freedom and opportunity. But my issue is not just with rhe absolute stupidity if the narrative but that no character except Franklin is relatable or even interesting. Micheal is an entitled boring man stuck in his mid life crisis. He's already made it and can't enjoy his life. He had no stakes until he decides to be an insane person. His family is horrible and I don't feel any emotion at his reunion. He doesn't deserve a happy ending. Trevor is an outdated protag, his only personality traits is being an insane person. None of his story is interesting. He's just a psychopath. Frankin feels like a good character surrounded by an awful story that turns him into an equally bad character.

      Yeah I agree. there aren't many layers to their personalities. Trevor is a one-dimensional character masquerading as a fourth-demensional one. He is a shallow shamble that makes up the rules as he goes along. He annoyingly distracts and overshadows the charming development of Franklin and maybe Even Michael but arguably so. His inconsistencies and tasteless violent behavior really derailed the narrative. I don't think anyone who isn't collecting kids toys and drooling over spandex-clad musclemen are going to find him all that interesting or funny either. I might be wrong but I feel like the writers were too fool of themselves when it came to Trevor. Trevor reeks of the kind of self-satisfied arrogance of a hack comedian making a dumb crowd go wild. At the end of the day, GTA 5 is a cynical corporate exercise rolled into a rotten chimichanga of the worst impulses of modern Hollywood

    Gta V is trash, characters are trash that looks like it was taken out of a South Park episode, everyone is crazy and annoying, story is trash, theres nothing to do in the map, you cant enter anywhere, theres no minigames, you cant buy houses, everything is empty, driving is arcade, game is less realistic than GTA IV, you get a lot of money from the heists but you have nothing to buy with it, you cant call other characters to do something like in GTA IV ...
    RDR1, RDR2, GTA San Andreas are 1 million times better

    GTA San Andreas story:we make a simple story with a point of betrayal and loss, and then coming back stronger to destroy what made YOURE friends into drug dealers, addicts to crime, and seeking refuge in the other side of the world
    GTA 4: we seek freedom, but freedom you heard is a lie, you fight for it and do every single thing for it,but you fail to get it and end up bowling with you friend for ever
    Gta 5:HAHA,we are hypocrits

    17:17 That part where you had a thought about all three characters presenting something of the GTA is the most interesting part, I think
    Michael - the capitalist GTA V who tries to make a society approved game for everyone
    Franklin - the ghost of GTA Sand Andreas
    Trevor - the real GTA with all the madness and explosions and stuff

    PLEASE READ: I try to keep my videos as short as possible so I know I've missed stuff out. I haven't highlighted GTA 5's great points as much for that reason. I know this video will get heat. GTA 5 is a great game, I'm putting that on the record! Still, there's so much crap surrounding it up to this point that I truly believe is, at the least, worth acknowledging! Some stuff has been hyperbolized for poetic and comedic effect too ight so don't go mental about that. Anyways, hope u enjoy!
