The Ego Is an Activity, Not an Entity

  • Is the ego the same as the separate self? And what is the difference between the ego, separate self and finite mind? The finite mind is the character or clothing that infinite consciousness assumes in order to have objective experience. It can not have objective experience without doing so, without the agency of the finite mind.
However, identification with that finite mind is not necessary. That identification is the activity referred to as ego or separate self. It is not an entity, it is the activity of thinking and feeling that I am separate, temporary and finite.
The ego is a belief, not simply the functioning of the finite mind. We can have finite experience, as we all do every day, without the belief that I am a finite or separate being. Without the belief in the ego we see and feel that we share the same being.
So it is not finite experience that is problematic. It is beliefs that are problematic.

The egoic or personal mind is not going to be a willing participant in what it sees as its own destruction. The mind knowing everything about us will strike at the soft underbelly that we all have. For the mind this is a fight to the death.

Thanks Rupert, I loved the clarification about the difference between the separate self and the finite mind:
“It is true that in order to have objective experience, it is necessary for infinite awareness to know experience through the agency of a finite mind; (but) it is not necessary to believe that I am that finite mind.
So the ego, or the apparently separate self, is a belief, it is not simply the functioning of the finite mind.”

Great wisdom. The late Lester Levenson talked about dropping the mind altogether and going on intuition. To do this apparently you have to let go of ALL negative emotions and eventually thoughts. As you progress in your development, abilities open up for you. These include some psychic skills and being able to tune into any person or place and know what's happening. His autobiography is amazing. He said when he drove down the streets of New York, every single light went green. People would give up their parking places to let him in without knowing why. When he sent into a store, the shop assistants went out of their way to help him. Apparently he radiated love to the highest degree. I wander if these abilities are open for anyone who develops to a certain level.

" It may appear very paradoxical, but this is true - before you can lose your ego, you must attain it. Only a ripe fruit falls to the ground. Ripeness is all. An unripe ego cannot be thrown, cannot be destroyed. And if you struggle with an unripe ego to destroy and dissolve it, the whole effort is going to be a failure. Rather than destroying it, you will find it more strengthened, in new and subtle ways.

This is something basic to be understood - the ego must come to a peak, it must be strong, it must have attained an integrity - only then can you dissolve it. A weak ego cannot be dissolved. And this becomes a problem.

In the East all the religions preach egolessness. So in the East everybody is against the ego from the very beginning. Because of this anti attitude, ego never becomes strong, never comes to a point of integration from where it can be thrown. It is never ripe. So in the East it is very difficult to dissolve the ego, almost impossible.

In the West the whole Western tradition of religion and psychology propounds, preaches, persuades people to have strong egos - because unless you have a strong ego, how can you survive? Life is a struggle; if you are egoless you will be destroyed. Then who will resist? Who will fight? Who will compete? And life is a continuous competition. Western psychology says: Attain to the ego, be strong in it.

But in the West it is very easy to dissolve the ego. So whenever a Western seeker reaches an understanding that ego is the problem he can easily dissolve it, more easily than any Eastern seeker. This is the paradox - in the West ego is taught, in the East egolessness is taught. But in the West it is easy to dissolve the ego, in the East it is very difficult.

This is going to be a hard task for you, first to attain and then to lose - because you can lose only something which you possess. If you don’t possess it, how can you lose it? "

The ego is much more than the belief to be a finite mind, otherwise we would just have to stop believing in order to get rid of it. Ego is attachment to everything that confirms separate existence. Attachment is much stronger than belief. Even if we have on the inner journey very convincing transpersonal experiences of regions of consciousness beyond the finite mind, the ego is back very fast in the driver seat after the experience. Only the annihilation of all levels of self-perception can end the reign of the ego.

But the issue always is, what happens to the richness of contexts created by the multitude of King Lears. In this matter I think Iain McGlchrist is correct: infinite consciousness generates individuality and diversity for precisely that reason. Individuality and the creation of it is critical to both the function and purpose of being. The purpose of being is not to negate individuality or to dissolve or lose it. Quite the opposite: it is to generate it in the first place, and having generated it, to reap the fruit of that process in eternity. This doesn't mean that one needs to sustain a limited, egoic view of oneself. But it does mean that King Lear ias "added unto" John Smith as a result of having been King Lear.

One teacher distinguished between feelings and emotions so that people who had never been in the role of observer of their thoughts could start to see the difference. Feelings come from presence (various expressions of love, such as compassion) and emotions from the ego - are intense and you would most likely put a photo on FB to share them with everyone, or you would like to call your mother and complain about your fate. In this sense, the feelings are deep and silent, and the emotions are loud and explosive. There is no judgment of what is right or wrong - the difference just exists but it is difficult to express in language.

But, are you saying I cannot feel compassion unless I view the other person's sorrow as my own? I would say that compassion from the perspective of oneness is the recognition and remembrance of needless sorrow, of recognizing that the other person is caught in the illusion of being a separate self and therefore is able to suffer. I guess I am saying that the sadness or compassion I feel is for a different reason than that of the person whose sadness can only exist due to being a separate self.

    • @brianlittrell797
      @brianlittrell797 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Compassion is caring, affection and empathy combined. You care how the person feels and you can feel or sense their pain or distress to some degree/extent. That doesn't mean you suffer too but you can sense/feel what they are feeling without suffering. It is a natural response to another being's suffering when our hearts are open enough. Otherwise the empathy is very limited or non-existent. Disliking someone closes down our ability to feel compassion or empathy for them because they are opposites.

He says that the one character who is being very mean and aggressive to the other must be seeing the other as separate from himself, because he would never treat himself that way. I know a number of people who are, in fact, really mean and abusive toward themselves. You can feel separate from others yet be kind and compassionate toward them. Ego is not just a belief in separation - it is a negative belief system, a negative mind. Thinking by itself is not a bad thing - the problem is in the negative and discordant thinking that the ego represents. The nature of The Self consists only of good, but since man doesn’t know The Self, he thinks that ego is himself, at least an inseparable part of him, which is not true. When people hear that they must stop thinking to reach enlightenment, they are afraid that they are going to become like vegetables. But they forget that true infinite intelligence belongs to The Self and not the mind, which is some sort of a very limited artificial intelligence. Just The Self uses a nonverbal way to process the information, not thoughts but understanding.

I was also able to see the Mental Field of Consciousness, which contained all the frames, Holograms, images, letters, numbers, etc. themselves which are pasted as frames on the screen. Then I saw how a screen approached and adjusted, then I no longer knew what happened. From there I understood that anything I see, perceive or feel is not real. So the kundalini, the chakras belong to the illusion, because without that screen you cannot see, feel or perceive anything at all. That includes all teaching, teachers, books, videos, sounds, gurus, etc.
In that screen the movie or the "personal story" is being projected by the Light of Consciousness.

Can you perceive something without it expression i.e living activity, wheither it is visible or invisible ?
Thus, isn't making discrimination between the so called entity and activity a dualit perspective ?
A belief, an Entity, an Activity....what is the ultimate seek ?
    🤔

" Awareness Cannot have expeience except through finite mind"
Says who? To think the creator doesnt already know and understand all, experience or otherwise, is absurd.
He doesnt need us to experience anything

He starts by saying 'as I was in this process of thinking' and then he falters and asks the question regarding ego and separate self - so it is nothing, just a stumble in his speech as he changes his mind about what he's saying.

He asks "Do you use the words 'separate self' and 'ego' synonymously?"

(...) Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. (1 Corinthians 15:3-5)
