Excellent to see one of these great British engines refurbished and rebuilt in a totally professional way. Testament to a quality engineered machine in the first place and sympathetic, professional restorers. Well done to all.
I seem to remember sixty years ago as a young apprentice a crane fell into the sewerage ponds. After it had been pulled out I was given the task of recommissioning the engine. Took the sump off cleaned it up , changed all the filters and after being submerged for weeks the Gardiner engine ran as good as new. Nice to see your video.
Only the Brits, could drive a water pump, with a method that is normally only used to drive a distributor. wtf? Very spiffy overhaul, a truly worthy effort to keep a piece of history alive and running!
Yea so weak lasted 60 years plus typical, it’s like those jet engines and steam turbines they invented they would never work out either! Bloody useless lot the Brits😀 it’s like that Merlin engine they slung together it took the US to sort it all out for them!😀 And Radar and Electronic computers and mass produced steel and the Industrial Revolution were everybody got a railway and bloody great metal ship, bloody useless lot😂
thanks for the excellently detailed account of how to properly set up the timing for these engines . I presume this must be done with the timing chain at full tension , if so how do you set the correct tension afterwards please. love the video series , thanks for the time and effort put in to make and edit them - appreciate it
Roll on Part 8. I am looking forward to the test run. In the meantime I can enjoy watching the previous vids. Many thanks from a new subscriber who's Dad worked at Gardners in the parish of Patricroft during the 60/70s.
Great video 👍🏻 I was fortunate enough to visit the factory in Peel Green on a school trip as I lived in Urmston and if I remember they were looking for apprentices 🤔
0.003" Taken off the flywheel plate and the same off the pressure plate to clean up the faces. depth of the flywheel plate altered (as its bolt in) to compensate for it.
There was some heat cracking on the flywheel clutch plate, not the flywheel itself. But the clutch plate was NDT inspected, resurfaced and deamed perfectly servicable.

Unfortunately Gardner didn't move with the times and were late to the turbocharging fold which allowed the likes of Cummins to get a foothold by offering higher power outputs than Gardner could. By the time Gardner did go turbocharged it was to little to late with some of the last models like the LYT and LG1200 being rushed to market and suffering from reliability issue which tarnished the name that had been known for unrivalled reliability.
The earlier LW's are all BSW, these later LXB's are a bit of a mix of BSW and BSF. Spanners and sockets are certainly not common anymore but can still be purchased new.

Memories. Of a fleet of Fodens.
When I was doing it for a living, a long time ago, 4LW and 6LW engine overhauls. Great engines. Appreciate the videos, nice to see it done properly.🇦🇺
When these were made everything was right with Britain !!
Drove one of these engines for 17 years .never let us down .Also had a 6LW 120 and a 6lxdt

amazing work
Thank you! Cheers!
Worked on these when I was a young fella back in the 70s/early 80s in foden 8 wheel tipper trucks.
This is very interesting and so very nicely done!
Subscribed, am waiting for the next video :)
Thank you! Cheers! Next video coming soon
1,5,3,6,2,4 ..........it would rev so slowly on steep hills you would count the firing order....
You put the water rail on over painted mating surfaces. Explain. I've always heard people say metal on metal so bolts don't loose tension.
Was the flywheel rubbing plate machined? if so did the flywheel/pressure plate flange need anything taken off to compensate?
0.003" Taken off the flywheel plate and the same off the pressure plate to clean up the faces. depth of the flywheel plate altered (as its bolt in) to compensate for it.
Flywheel has many cracks from overheating or slipping?
There was some heat cracking on the flywheel clutch plate, not the flywheel itself. But the clutch plate was NDT inspected, resurfaced and deamed perfectly servicable.

I just can`t believe the Gardner company has disappeared. What a waste. And why.?

Best therapy ever rebuilding takes me back to stripping auxiliary engines off afloat ,cheers 👍
I bet this is all whitworth.
You dont see whitworth anymore. Even the spanners are obsolete
