Tim's PET Bottles to Filament (Part 1 - Bottle Cutter)

  • This video is about the Filament maker I am in the process of making.
    It is the Bottle Cutter, I have done an Instructable here: www.instructables.com/Tims-PE...
    I am afraid this project has been put on the back shelf for the moment.
    I am sure you have seen people pulling these strips of plastic through a hot end of a 3D printer.
    I fell for it.
    The filament that is produced is hollow, it is a tube.
    There is about 60% missing inside the filament and you will have to adjust the 3D printer to compensate for this.
    I did some calculations (I should have done this at the start) and decided it was not feasible, you should be getting about 5 meters of 1.75mm filament from a bottle, the rest (any longer) equates to air with this process.
    I had a go at pushing it through but I was not able to push it fast enough and control the temperature close enough, I don't have the resources to do what was needed.
    I have some other ideas, but it will have to wait until I can get the resources I need.

    Interesting cutter. Tell us more about how you sharpened the edges of the bearings?

      I didn't. But you can.
      If you sharpen them it gives a cleaner/better cut.
      To sharpen an edge, you will need a rotary tool (Dremel type of thing) with a diamond coated disc.
      Mount just the bearing you want to sharpen on the highest post, of my 3D print, so that it spins freely.
      Hold the diamond disc (on high speed) above the bearing in the same orientation as the bearing.
      lower the diamond disc down onto the edge of the bearing you want to sharpen, so that it spins the bearing.
      Slowly change the angle of the disc so that it still spins the bearing, but also grinds the edge of the bearing.
      If you keep the bearing spinning you will get an even sharp edge to the bearing.

    Oh my god , thank you so much. I had been wanting to do this for sooo long , but your instructable was the most comprehensive one I had found yet.
    I read about the extruded filament being a tube in your description, and I wonder if you have gotten around to thinking of a possible solution for that?

      I have put this project on the back shelf for the moment.
      My Idea for getting rid of the hollow, is to cut a thinner strip to go inside the main strip.
      As it goes into the heater block, the hole in the block needs to be the right shape so that the first strip is formed into a tube so that the second strip can be placed inside it.

      Hi, thanks for visiting, I am sorry to say I have put this project on hold for the moment, I need to re-think the heater. I don't have the resources to fabricate one yet.
      I haven't tried it, but I was thinking of making a jig to hold two strips and use something like soldering iron to weld two strips together.

    Is there any issue with bottles being clean enough to prevent the filament from feeding properly? Any cleaning tips? I'll be doing this with middle school children.

      Hi, I have put the part of making it into filament on the back shelf for the moment.
      I just rinse the bottles in water before I cut them, boiling some water inside while I remove the groves also give them a steam clean I think.

      If you don't have a 3D Printer, there are many on-line printing services, you could send them the files I have put on the Instructable or give them the link to the Instructable explaining what you want.

    When I'm pulling that, my cut at some poiny won't be even and again, at some point it will just finish the cut with like a long 3mm diameter instead of like 8mm or so. ( not even at the middle of the bottle...)

      When pulling the the plastic through, you need to do it in downward direction to keep the plastic sat against the slide plate.

      @@findnaza6287 That's good to hear. Perhaps the tube you have is lighter than the tube I have. the weight of the tube was supposed to be heavy enough to pull it down. Glad it it is sorted.

      @@pramudyarendra I was using a hot end from a 3D printer, I felt it was a bit underpowered, Just adequate for what you see others doing.
      I am retired and don't have the income I used to have, most of my projects are limited to cheep stuff I can buy on eBay.
      My idea is to have a block that has a better heater, maybe 2 heaters so the temperature can be controlled better and a bit more depth to the block.
      Obviously there is nothing on the market like this and it would have to be made, I no longer have these resources.
      As I have mentioned, what you see others do, you get tube, this is easaly fixed.
      You make different sizes (widths) of plastic strip.
      You do as others, and as it starts pulling through, you add another strip (narrower) inside the first, this will reduce the hollow inside.
      It may be necessary to add a third strip (narrower) inside that one.
      Experimentation is needed, it may be necessary to first make a larger diameter filament using this process, then send it through a second heater to reduce it to the final size.
      Hope you got the idea of what I was trying to say.
      Basically what you need to do is the same as "Wire drawing". This requires a cross section greater on the input, than the cross section on the output side. you also have to allow for stretch.

    I don't understand. The bottle is cut by the bearings? How? I made one but it has a blade.

      Do you know how a pair of scissors work?
      Imagine an endless pair of scissors.

      @@revolioclockbergjr8482 Perhaps I should say guillotine. You need to understand the difference between cut and shear.
      Guillotines shear, not cut. (some scissors in the right state will shear.)
