This movie could have actually been good if the script and a few actors delivered their lives a bit better. Would have been nice to see a girl trying to win the affection of her crush while trying to catfish him as well seeing the mess unfold around her and eventually realizes that what she done was wrong and admits to what she did. But instead, we get a movie trying to justify being a nice girl.

I'd like this movie better if she were the villain instead of the protagonist, and didn't get the guy in the end. It could show that just because someone is an "underdog" doesn't mean they're not capable of evil things. The movie would at least be more interesting, and also wouldn't tell their audience that catfishing and kissing someone without their consent or even knowledge is forgivable, and that you deserve a second chance.

A character can be the villain and protagonist at the same time. A protagonist is just the lead character in the story. It would just mean the 'good guy', if there is one, would be the antagonist.

The reason I really dislike this movie is because Sierra Burgess isn't a loser...she's just horrible from the ground up. All she ever does is use and manipulate people, only to then betray those around her when she can't use them for her own gain.
The worst part is that she still has the gall to constantly cry and blubber about how she is so unattractive and that's why she is never given a chance by anyone and blame everyone else for not accepting her. Basically it's r/nicegirls the movie. She learns nothing, loses nothing, and changes nothing.
While we're at it: There's the shallow nature of beauty standards, and then there's just poor hygiene. Needless to say, I think we can all see which side of that not-so-fine line Sierra stands on in this scenario.

Far too many romantic movies create romance around a bad behavior. Like catfishing in this movie, but above all infidelity. Infidelity is not a romantic way to meet, and in terms of probability, it is a very bad factor for the relationship. Those who write the scripts for all these films have a sick and harmful view of romance.

This movie is bad but gives me ideas? Like, we could have a movie with two characters, sierra being a classic pretentious nerd who demonizes pretty, superficial girls because of her own insecurities with her appearance. And then veronica, who has the looks and the charm but hates the smart girl because she herself struggles with the expectations to be the perfect girl. I would not make one of them the bullied and the other the bully, instead putting them at equal level. Then you *can* have the wrong number plot, and make it bring them together, but instead of intensifying the catfish have them bond and sierra confess that she acknowledged that she is doing a shitty thing and the guy doesn't deserve it, but she's too anxious to tell him the truth, to which her friends help her build confidence to do. And the payoff wouldn't have to be that she gets the guy, but that she is more interested in being "beautiful inside" and being a good person, even without getting the guy. Sierra and Veronica become better people and help each other with their problems and insecurities and form a true friendship. There it is, a less shitty movie with only a few changes.
(Alternatively, in a happy universe, there could be a similar movie but about sierra and veronica falling in love with each other.)

THIS. The creators would have then (at least) been able to achieve their goal of creating a relatable teen movie with a positive message about self-esteem, breaking stereotypes, and deconstructing the whole "not like the other girls" crap. Plus we would've seen far more substantial character development, even with the whole catfishing plotline (which admittedly is an entertaining premise if the characters aren't so rewarded for it). I finished the movie with pretty much the same response as you - left thinking about alternative plotlines, 'cause I honestly felt like there *was* a *potentially* good movie somewhere in that two-hour mess lol.

All of the criticisms people have against Sierra are so valid, but a lot of them can be applied to Veronica too and never are. The main problems with Sierra are that we are always supposed to be rooting for her, the cat fishing, of course, and her assaulting Jaime. Veronica is helping Sierra catfish Jaime almost the entire time, and also helped with the assault scene so why is she never criticized for it? I understand she had much more depth than Sierra but that doesn’t mean she’s void from those criticisms. (This isn’t @ the creator of this video, I’ve just seen a pattern in who people criticize)

In my opinion it has to do with the fact that Sierra is the protagonist and we are supposed to root for her while Veronica isn't and we are even encouraged to hate her or more accurately her mean girl archetype. The mean girl archetype is never the one whose behaviour we are supposed to support, the main character's are. The problem isn't necessarily the things being done, its the fact that protagonist doing them makes it seem that there isn't a problem with it and Sierra being rewarded at the end further makes it seem like her behaviour was okay.

So it’s a play on the Cyrano de Bergerac story: the main character is gifted with words but not super attractive. With a sexual assault twist, lol.
Anyway she’s not ugly. She has a really cute smile-I’d date her. If she dressed up she would probably look sharp. Idk. Beauty is only skin deep-and age catches up to everyone eventually. A good personality is a must in a real relationship.

This movie was basically an inverse of the usual “underdog rising up”. Instead of being from the perspective of the protagonist (Veronica), it is instead from the perspective of the antagonist (Sierra).
Veronica is a girl with a troubled past and struggles with her social life, being trapped in the “mean girl” image. She then finds herself being tutored by someone she regularly bullies, and develops a friendship. Gradually, she learns to love herself and move beyond the role her family brought onto her and learns how to be truly happy.
Sierra is a spiteful girl who feels society has wronged her. All of her problems are caused by her appearance (which she can’t control) and the opinions of others. She regularly blames everyone else, and so became a manipulative person to gain some sense of control in her life, especially when it is over those who wronged her. She becomes the tutor of her bully, and learns that her life isn’t as perfect as she initially thought, but this doesn’t matter to her. The only reason she is there is to gain more control and manipulate the boy who thinks she is somebody else. When she discovers Veronica is becoming her own individual, she attempts to tarnish her opportunity towards happiness, all to fulfill a sick desire to be on top by tearing everyone down because she feels she deserves everything just because society didn’t automatically life her on everybody’s shoulders.

Anecdotally, I've known a few girls who considered themselves ugly or alternative (even when they really weren't), who identited with downtrodden, "class-revolutionary" villains.
They saw no issue with the ends justifying the means, which was often the intended lesson (usually along with the idea that lowering everyone and creating conflict among your allies being a bad idea with unintended consequences that only benefit villains).
There is a market for this, it's just not a good thing to teach.

Never seen the film, no interest in ever seeing it. Still a very enjoyable Rant/Review. I agree about her just being average looking. I'm so sick of the "ugly" characters in films being either okay looking, super hot but with a birthmark or superhot and given frumpy glasses. Come have a look at my street casting directors! We got dozens of truely ugly people and I'm sure they would be willing to work for cheap!

Cyrano de Bergerac: An "ugly" man who falls in love with a woman (Roxanne) who loves a better looking guy (Christian) who isn't very smart. So he and Christian work together to catfish her and he writes her letters under the disguise of Christian name. Then Roxanne wants to meet directly so Cyrano whispers lines to Christian in the darkness so he can say the witty things Cyrano wants to say. He then finally decides to push Christian out of the way and speak to Roxanne directly and wins a kiss. Etc.
Sierra Burgess... Cyrano Bergerac... It's the same story and the writers definitely weren't clever enough to play it off at all.

I agree that Sierra's appearance is not awkward enough to make this dialog work. I saw her without the Barb hair and thick 80s glasses and thought “hey, she looks nice!” Heck, she's not too far off from someone I dated in high school. At the very least, giving her a little acne would have been more relatable.

The first thing I don't like about this movie is that it condones Sierra's actions. Obviously.
The second thing is that Sierra is constantly belittling her own appearance, and the film acts like she's right about it. She's so pretty! She has a pretty face, really nice hair, and clear skin. She may be chubby, but she's not obese by any means.
I'd get it if they were going for a "She doesn't know she's beautiful" thing. But they don't. They are actually trying to tell me that I'm seeing an ugly girl!
I do like the cheerleader character's arc tho. She learns to open up and drop the perfect fassade. Its a shame they started her out as a bully archetype. Oh, also- am I misremembering or does she get back with her abusive boyfriend? Is that plot even resolved?
