I've done the same thing, cut a piece of angle iron the width of the front wall of the box. Few bonds and it's better than before. After this I've always placed a tire without a rim at the front of the truck bed.
This is why i have a bedliner and tool box. I have hit my tool box before with my winch small dent in the tool box is better than bustin out my back window

Always put it in low gear and 4x4. Then crawl up and don't stop on the ramp. I usually put a piece of 3x4 plywood against the cab so I don't hit the window or dent the bed.
a couple 4x4s in the bed let the wheels hit the wood and gives a good stop before you do that. So many problems loading here. I'm a "safety third" dude at times... but trailers and loading are not something I ever gamble on.

Issue is, going backwards the tires can't clean themselves out like they are designed, hence once you get into mud to or snow, they'll clog up and become useless. So it's actually better having the tire on the proper way, that way the threads can work as designed and fling excess dirt away, instead of clogging.

If you've got the tires on the right way and you start getting stuck, since they have more traction backing up, they could possibly help you reverse out of a sticky situation, right? I use a chunk of cut wood up front to avoid this. front wheel was not turning last several feet so brake was applied, slick bed too
