Joker is an upcoming American psychological thriller film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is intended to launch DC Black, a series of DC-based films separate from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Todd Phillips from a screenplay co-written with Scott Silver and stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker, alongside Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy. Set in 1981, Joker follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who is driven insane and turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City.
Development of a standalone Joker film began in 2016 and was confirmed in August 2017 after Warner Bros. and DC Films decided to deemphasize the shared nature of the DCEU. Phillips was set to direct, produce, and co-write the script-inspired by Martin Scorsese's films Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The King of Comedy-with Silver. Scorsese was attached to produce early in production but left due to other obligations. Phoenix became attached to the project in February 2018 and was cast that July, and the majority of the cast had signed on by August. Principal photography began in September 2018, taking place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark and concluded the following December.
Joker will premiere at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2019, and is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on October 4, 2019.

What I find even _funnier_ is that I heard RDJ was gonna get the Oscar for Iron Man the time they gave it to Head Ledger for his Joker, and now it seemed as if RDJ was gonna get an Oscar again for Iron Man, but now everyone's saying the Joker should have it again 😂😂😂

Not true. DC just isn't afraid of going dark unlike Marvel. DC can be both Light AND Dark. That's DC's universe. Marvel may get there when they really start getting into mutants and the X-Men.

@@1polyron1 exactly, like fat Thor felt natural but the jokes got so, so repetitive and eventually got super stale. The MCU needs to relax with the humour and stop using it as a tool to stop emotional moments from being intense

I love how the father talks. He speaks his mind and doesn't feel like he needs to 'dumb down' his thoughts for the younger two daughters. And they engage in the conversation and relate to what he's saying, which goes to show you that parents should talk to their kids like they normally would. Don't baby talk your kids. Give them more respect. They can keep up. Now these parents have two daughters that are able to communicate their thoughts in a beautiful way.
So true. It's a rare thing to see a parent engage their children in such a thoughtful mature conversation. It's admirable.

Joker's always been a very heavy character. On the one hand, you have an insane grinning freak. On the other, you have a mentally troubled man who has experienced nothing but cruelty and hardship all his life. Even in the Golden Age comics of the 80s and 90s, Joker was a complex, intriguing character - as DC has a habit of making its characters so.
The story of Joker is an ambiguous one, but his current plotline is nothing short of gruesome: he cuts the skin of his face off and wears it as a mask. If you think about it, though, it's a very sad metaphor, in which your face is the mask for the monster that lie within. Much of the Joker is an elaborate metaphor, even the man himself.
For me, DC's always been special in that they can make their characters human, while still maintaining that basis of fantasy. They can make super aliens relatable and bring truth to a dimension of magic. Their stories have always felt like driving in rain in the big city at night - melancholy, real. They make their characters by breaking them. They made Joker by making him a man.
Marvel sacrifices that honesty for the box office and the laughs, and even though that's worked well for them, they'll never be able to touch souls like DC have. DC has characters with real mental illnesses and real problems. It's covered teenage pregnancies and addictions and LGBTQ (in the decades when all this was still very taboo). Maybe that's why DC isn't as popular - it showcases the dark truth of life when all people want is entertainment.
DC might not have been able to cement their certain something on the big screen yet, but I think the Joker could well be the movie that does it. High hopes on this one.
