- Telling someone that washing their locs ruins the starter process is one of the worst pieces of advice you can give them!
Firstly, washing your locs actually speeds along the locking process as water naturally does this for you! (even if it undoes the clean styled look a bit)
Secondly, not washing your hair will cause a lot of build up to accumulate in your locs (sebum and dirt build up specifically)😬
Lastly, unraveling is just a part of the process. There are things you can do to minimize it, like retwisting every 2-3 weeks (only during the starter stage) but it’s something that will happen and compromising the health of your locs and scalp because of it, is not worth it 🙅🏿

Water is the key to most living things growing, so I think you good.
💯Everything made up of life needs water to have the gift of life breathed into it.
The thing is your hair isn't alive.
It helped mines loc faster
Think 😂 your funny bro
@@REALGODSPEED I understand your point. It’s just growing is my point, water is one of the healthiest things for it. Leaves and fruit aren’t really alive either, but they still need water to grow. Thanks though.
I wet my hair everyday and my hair grew so much ✨
How??? Whenever I got starter locs and if water touched them they became poofy and so ugly how y’all doin it
@@HimJones1292 it depends on your hair type. You probably have monkey hair lol and you can’t wash them the moment we get them wait six months or so when they start budding then give it a wash. It will look good and don’t use too much oil

You need to get a water spray bottle and spray it over your lots. In the morning when you wake up and first remove your Durag and in the evening just before you put on your Durag to wrap your locs for the night before you go to sleep.
This is process is called “Misting”.
Spraying/Misting in the morning allows your locs to be moisturised during the day.
Spraying/Misting in the evening allows your locs to be moisturised during the night.
Putting your durag on straight after you Spray/Mist in the evening allows the moistures to be locked in to your locs and scalp.
This avoids dryness and overall helps with growth as well. 👍🏾🙏🏾 let me know if this works for you

I started my locs two weeks ago and I needed to see this thank you!!!
Wash your hair just get a cap to tie it down during the wash. No rinse out conditioner to mature but leave in is great for them. Refresh your hair daily with rose water or another kind of refresher spray and don't use wax products creates build up. Clarifying shampoo instead of moisturizing until mature as well. Hope this help.

Was jus about to comment essentially this same thing lol. Have had dreads for 8 years 🦾. There’s a very common misconception that either you don’t wash ya hair AT ALL wen u have dreads (wtf?) or that u can’t wash em while they’re starter locs. Whole time washing your hair promotes and speeds up locking. This is why I encourage people to research from reputable places or people who have that knowledge themselves so they don’t go off hearsay or bad sources that make
Them either damage their hair or make
Various other mistakes.
Edit: and yea you’re right completely. It’s jus apart of the process. What I recommend is washing on retwist days for ppl with starter locs if anybody sees this. So washing and then getting your retwist after, but If you’re going to a shop to get your hair done they’ll usually do that for u unless u specifically say u alr did it. And even then they’ll still ask u if u want another wash usually.
Goals!!!! Just started mine two days ago 🥰
I started mine last week!! how’s ur process going so far?
same , keep me in the loop too
same here 😂
@@oneboredcooki3.-.355 started a month ago i need a retwist so much unraveling my hair grew alot water + oil duo>>
How are they!? ❤
They look beautiful…
They look good
Black folks with locs should be washing regularly. That advice is not for us.
The answer to this question is that everyone is different, and the hair is going to loc differently. Those with a tighter curl pattern are going to loc faster than those with softer thinner hair. Another thing to consider is if you are training them in between washings. Do you want "cosmetic" uniform ones or more freeform? I'm 23 years into this. I couldn't get mine wet first. They came all the way loose. After getting them redone, I twisted (trained) them every day. They loc'd much faster that way.
It depends on the person hair porosity and curl pattern, a low porosity and type 3b-4a person with starter locs water could delay the budding process
And it could also speed it up .
I have to disagree, I have very curly hair...and that ish loc'd super fast. Remember curly hair is always trying to loc...even when you're not trying to loc 😂😂😂😂. That's why I just humbley submitted 😂😂😂😂😂 and loc'd. Best decision I've made with my 3a 3b 4a curly hair.
@@metsl1870 exactly mine locd up within a few weeks water sweat and protective styles helped i was 5 years in then I just cut them now I’m about to get them interlocked back in
It def. Depends on the hair ❤❤
Im high porosity type 3c or 3b you think its fine if i wash my hair in the early stage?
I’m doing mine myself everyday retwist and rinsing and doing a weekly wash. 0 build up and I they’re loc’d. I started in October. It’s the beginning of February and they’re already 4 5 inches long. I’ve had locs years ago and I was told not to wash them. Man they’ve grown 20x faster the way I do it now. Plus I have to be in front of important people a lot so appearance is everything too.
Glad my hair isn’t the only one looks my trash after washing or having em in general can’t wait for another few months to pass I wanna see my results
I ain’t wash my hair for a month and 3 weeks since having it 🤣 idk but this my first time so I’m not washing it until a retwist.
I jus got my starter locs they go to my eyebrow im excited asl
Jamaican mango and lime spray and Wild Growth Oil does wonders
I washed mine from the start and I wet them up in the shower often. I'm 5 months in and they are thriving.
@@LilithsCosmicLounge I have traditional small locs. I started with braiding them myself.I simply wash, add some oil if needed and retwist every 6-8 weeks.
@@lavernewarren4310What braids did u get? And will any braids/twists eventually form into locs?
@@Unknown-bc6qw I just installed a bunch of tiny braids and left them. My first set of locs I started with two-strand twist. There are several locking methods. Do your research to decide what's best for you.
@lavernewarren4310 this is so helpful thank you, I started mine 3 days ago and I was so lost. Doing research and came across this. Do you wash them every 6 to 8 weeks too? And do you have any product recommendations?
@@livinglifewithnadine I wash my hair once a week and spray water on it in between. As far as products I use Dr. Bronners to wash my hair and I use oils such as coconut, olive, blackseed oil, castor oil, pretty much whatever I have available as needed. I'm very low maintenance.

I washed them whenever my hair and scalp needed to be washed. Majority of my scalp was locd within the first month.
Water doesn't ruin your locs its the driven force behind growing locs..i should know... I've grown loccs 3 times ...im on my 3rd go around....ive done it the way of having braids first then goong into locs.. ive did the baby locs then not washing my hair for 6months to a year then do a retwist...ive also did the freeform into a more aesthetic way...and i can say thus freeform"just water and time" into a more aesthetic way is alot more healthier and more satisfying and way..
When u have starter locs it depends on wha u started with if u started w/ instant ull be fine, if u started w/ braids or two strands u gotta be kinda careful u dont unravel em especially w/ coils also
your wrong you still can wash them but do it carefully and with a wavecap/durag on and have rubber bands on the twist so it doesn't un ravel

Water is always needed it's literally life
Hate when ppl say that I cannot have dirty hair
No, it helps them loc faster 😊
Bro grew a stubble while at it too. Stay Blessed.
use cold water for better results
Spraying locs and rubbing a warm rag over your parts and scalps is totally different than a wash. And it's somewhat necessary depending on how active a person is before the 6-8 week mark. Ideally, you should be getting your starters retwisted once a month anyway, depending on your texture, and that should come with a wash and conditioning.
I started my loc journey last than a month ago. I washed my hair yesterday without a retwist and my hair is perfectly fine. I washed it using a spray bottle with water, dawn (just a little bit), and jojoba oil.
i started min jan 3rd im interested un yur journey..its hard to find ppl close in journeys
@@rugaa372 I have a blog called whispering bliss. I haven’t been to document my journey but I will start now. I have microlocs
If you do wash them and you're scared they're going to unravel just wear a stocking cap and wash with shampoo no conditioner
It only ruins the bonding between the hair product and the hair itself. Other than that, your locs can live.
In my experience of locs washing helped mine to 🔒faster

Water is your locs mosturizer as well as budder
water definitely helps
Not at all it actually helps them loc faster and keep away build up
ppl that say that don’t know wtf their ever talking abt even if they hair looks good
Depends on type of hair 4c hair for sure you can wash it helps them loc faster
That’s exactly what I did
I washed mine after a month and had to wait a couple days to get a retwist but they definitely came out a little better if u ask me
Never listen to those people
Should I wash my stater loccs
i sprinkle water in my locs every morning
it all depends on how quickly your hair will look. The more loose your hair is the harder it is to lock the more coarse your hair is the easier it is the lock so if your hair is loose or is it just that you don’t wash your hair for at least one month and this is the deep cleaning you’re still supposed to do a gentle wash and you can do that with a do rag and a wig cap to keep everything from getting too loose. And then you let it dry on the blow dryer. After the lock phase is over though you go to wash anytime you want to. Please don’t walk around with the locks on my like bullshit
What folks tell me Ilook like ..but new to starters n feel completely opposed..
Not at all, my son had could at 3 yes old and he stayed getting his hair wet in the tub. That actually helped them loc quicker
It definitely doesn’t effect your locs if you get instant locs
Who started this rumor that going around with dirty loks is a thing? I've had mines for 18 years and washed them once a week since day 1. Just keep the product to a minimum cuz it gets trapped and can start to smell. Otherwise WASH your loks. Clean loks are healthy loks. ❤😂
They need water Bro…loc up and grow quicker. Watch the dread up…off to a good start
i have a 3b hair type i understand
I actually have a question does black people with complex hair styles wash their hair? Sorry if i sound racist but i dont know since im from the south east asia.
Them are nice
When you first get them no not the next day or week
But everyone have their own way of things
They lock faster when kept clean. Just don’t use conditioner
Why not, I use a leave in daily conditioner every other day and I water daily because my micro locs loves it , especially on the ends of my leave out.
I have 4c/4b type hair, my hair likes a lot of moisture. Feel free to check out mine.
@@kinasworlduncutmylife5903 I have 4C also, but conditioner made made slip out of knots and hindered the locing process. I mean when first starting out- the knots need time to form.
@@fatboitino2 In the beginning I had slippage too , so I stop waited until my hair began to lock up really good and then I went back to it because my hair love a lot of moisture.
It's always better to wash them, you ruined them when you don't wash them and they won't set properly
I don't believe that water aids the locking process ❤
The first time I washed my starter locs I used a du rag so my twists wouldn’t unravel.
it depends
It looks nice to me
Rinse hair in cold water
Is it best to spray water on them
This is rrue to me it happend today now my dreads keep going up and un twisting if you have tips like and comment them PLEASE😅😢
When I washed my hair they looked silky and poofy
I mean I wash my hair whenever and yeah water ruins it lol, there was a time I had for my hair retwisted it itches for two days I wash it. All my hair came loose🤦🏿♂️ I had to go back the next week and get it redone
Don't wet it if you just twisted it because when you first twist it there loose wait a month or 2 b4 starting to wet
I heard conditioner messes them up
Not true! When you shampoo your starter locks it's best to spin the lock ALL THE WAY DOWN THE LOCK THE FIRST YEAR UNTIL ITS COMPLETELY LOCK, once it's completely locked then just retwist the new growth, people hair be looking frizzy because they are only retwisting the new growth.
Almost 4 years in and my hair is down my back! Wash your hair lol
I went swimming with mine and they got ruined pretty bad
Not true people have been out here with miss informing
Just got locs a couple days ago when and how should i wash my locs
i washed my started locs every week they still locked
Washing them actually makes them loc quicker
When I shower I wet my hair and it look like dat but when I get out I oil it and it grow every 2 weeks
but he got a retwist 😂 that ain’t from a wash it’s clearly just done
My starters are really short and I basically mist them daily. Never washed. They comes loose within 2 weeks and I have at least 2 more weeks before retwist. By that time most of my locks are loose and shabby. Not to mention all the new growth. It’s tragic. Lol
Same
Same here
just leave it alone it will lock and form on its own

Hair needs water/moisture to retain length… my opinion
I noticed when I work Out the sweat makes my hair swell after my retwist and I just add the oil to it 🤷🏾♀️ and I mist it ever other day
im starting my locs next week because i have a 3 month trip coming up. i won’t have anyone to retwist them for me though. so should i avoid getting it wet?
