- Battle League reviewed by Travis Northup on Nintendo Switch.
Mario Strikers: Battle League is part skillful soccer game, part ruthless brawler, and almost always a complete blast to play. If you've played any games in the series before, there won't be many surprises in store for you and the small roster of characters and game modes is definitely disappointing, but what's there is incredibly fun and replayable. I'm impressed by the online mode in the time I've had with it so far too, as it sets the stage for a ranked playlist that I look forward to grinding my way to the top of.

My biggest problem with this version of strikers is how small the field is compared with previous versions. No space to lead the ball and pass with ease.
It's the same size it's a different camera angle that makes it feel smaller

That was my first thought. Just when the game starts, you can already see the outline where both goalkeepers are located. That's way too small.

Very disappointed at the bare bones single player. The game itself looks great but why do so many of these games have a generic tournament mode and exhibition mode, and that's it. No franchise mode or fun mini games?

Problems with this game (as a Mario Strikers Charged lover):
-no charging the ball
-sound design is bland (remember how awesome the sounds were when passing and shooting in Charged?)
-no epic slow-mo shots
-field is too small
-no slide tackle button
-no unique game-changing dodges (ex: hammer bro throwing a hammer down to hit the person trying to tackle them)
-less characters
-no sidekick characters (feels weird to have the same character on each team and makes the captain feel insignificant)
-no character special shots (it used to do a unique special shot for each character if you held down the shoot button)
-less maps
-maps are bland, no unique obstacles or anything
-no challenges mode (the challenges in Charged were actually pretty fun)
-no career mode (Charged didn't have this either)
-controls just don't feel great, and you can't change them
-no unlockables
-can't control the goalie at all
Also technically there is slide tackling. You have to perfect time your tackle and they will do a slide.
Yeah, strange decision by Nintendo to not have slide tackle be it's own button like it has been, but there is slide tackling in the game (thankfully) and it shouldn't take that long to get used to
Basically the game has been nerfed from previous versions with less options all around. Fun game for about 5 hours, return it or sell it.

It needs more single player content. The first game may have had fewer cups, but at least it had an unlockable team and cheats. This one has gear that you can get in the shop, but it's lacking in unlockables.

Super Mario Sluggers was fun as hell. That was probably my favorite game on the Wii - right next to Mario Sports Mix.
Daisy is known for being the “Tomboy Princess”. The fact that she’s not in this game, as a default character, is weird as hell to me lol

So about the limited amount of characters you mentioned, well it was actually leaked in the game’s files that there are actually 20 character slots total hidden inside. This either means Nintendo is being really secretive about unlockable characters and aren’t telling us about it, or they have a total of 10 dlc characters they’re preparing
tbf, Smash had like 16 "slots" for extra characters on release, but they only used 12, likewise the previous smash used 7 out of 9 slots. Could they use all 10 here? Sure, but some of it is simply planning ahead, but not in stone.
It'll be free updates a few months after release like they did with Mario Tennis and Golf. Nintendo are the king of half finished games.
Even still he has to review the package as it is and honestly 8 is too generous for something so bare bones which unfortunately has been the case for a lot of these Mario spin off games on the switch

Strikers charged was way better. Way more identity to each playable character, with unique dodges and charged strikes. Hammer Bro could drop a hammer on his opponents to crush them, freeing up room to take a shot, where if he charges it fully, he throws hammers at the goalie knocking him down to score into an open net. Dry bones with his dodge could literally teleport behind the goalkeeper and walk the ball into the net with his unique dodge if you timed it to perfection, or with his charged shot he could electrocute the keeper giving an opportunity for a teammate to score while he was stunned. Maybe it wasn't the most balanced game in the world, but it certainly had more character and was more enjoyable.
That’s not even scratching the surface. Strikers charged had all of the maps from the original game and even more maps that of it’s which were all creative, unique, and fun. This game on the other hand only has five maps and all of them are bland and generic. The menus on charged are all very cool and fun to look at while this games menus just look bland and generic. The gameplay in charged is very fun, exciting, and very cool to learn all the tricks and stuff. Battle league on the other hand while decently fun, can not match with the awesomeness of charged. The music in charged is amazing and most of the songs are bops to listen to. Battle league though has generic and forgettable music. There is more but that’s all I’m gonna day.

Forgot to mention that the Ai on your team, especially in Galaxy mode is extremely frustrating. I’ll have 3 defenders surrounding 1 dude, and they just sit there like they wanna take a picture of them scoring for Trasher magazine

Galaxy mode in general is already frustrating. Not having competent Ally CPU while I’m having a migraine from the opposing COMs slamming around the ball like it’s a college freshman at a frat party is just draining all the fun.

It's pretty much just their sports titles getting this treatment. I've honestly rarely been a serious fan off their sports titles so it doesn't bother me much.
However, if it migrates to Mario platformers (getting more levels and the game feeling incomplete) or Zelda (more dungeons and story pieces) then I'm selling my Switch.
Mario Tennis was decent and felt like they put lots of effort into it. The others not so much ... no single player campaign, fewer characters ... is pretty shocking.

Eh I'm actually a little disappointed in the lack of polish...
The minimal single player/local player options is disappointing, there's the obvious roster issue, we lost the character themes from Charged, and there are significantly less win & loss animations for the characters.
Not to mention they've been reusing these characters' voice clips for years at this point.

Hyper strike is a terrible mechanic, at least in single player. Basically a ball appears and if it’s not near the character you’re controlling, you’re probably not getting it (as you have to drop what you’re doing and cycle through until you get to the right character). When you’re opponent gets it, the best approach seems to just pass the ball in a triangle in your own half until the ability for them to hyper strike wears off, otherwise they get a free two points just from stepping in your half.
they changed p much everything. You could get so many cheese goals sidekicks (i.e. dry bones charged dodge). Now passing feels like a chore that doesnt even charge your shots easily

Imagine if this game had a campaign mode where your Mii counterpart starts off the season with a team scrubs, and has an end goal of taking their team to the championship cup. You could win matches and complete challenges to unlock team customizations, hire all star free agents, and evolve your team of scrubs into being better players. Perhaps throw in some fun diversion mini-games to train your team. A really meaty single player like that would have convinced me to buy this.

There's only been 4 Nintendo games so far this year and besides Nintendo Switch Sports, the other 2 have been Kirby & the Forgotten Land and Pokémon Legends Arceus, two games that are most certainly NOT lacking in content.

My biggest issue with this game is the AI.
The enemy team's AI is smart, while your team's are just purely incompetent - they won't even chase after items while the enemy's IMMEDIATELY goes for it. And the worst part of it all is that you can't even swap to them properly - it's like a roulette and cycle that you have to go to manually cycle to the character you want to take over for.
Their team's goalie is highly competent, mine can't even block a straight-shot from half-field.
Until they rebalance the AI's, I've uninstalled it from my Switch. It's really bad. :/

Hey, I'll still be playing the one for Gamecube. It's one of my favorite games and it does seem like this version is going to start off pretty bare to begin with. I'll still get it though

For anyone curious, this isn't just "another Mario sports game."
The developer of the Mario Strikers series (Next Level Games) has been one of Nintendo's best 2nd party developers. Luigi's Mansion 3 proved that they're arguably better at displaying the Mario characters' personalities than even Nintendo themselves, and this game looks to continue it. I'm excited.

The Nintendo Switch is based on Nvidia's Tegra X1 SOC (System On a Chip). The same chip that's on the Nvidia Shield Pro that was released almost a decade ago. So yeah, outdated on release.

Nintendo really needs to stop half-assing games and fully release them, this game feels kinda unfinished
Calling it unfinished is a bit of an overstatement.
It definitely is finished, its just not content heavy, but even then, people have been saying that it has more content than charged. If you're not happy with it, fine, you do you, but don't call it unfinished. It's disrespectful to the devs that put all the hard work in, like look how much effort went into each animation for all the characters and the amount of time it would've taken to make gear work, code it, balance it. The customizability for club stadiums, that probably took ages to model. The MUSIC, the amount of care that went into each song with what they reference in the mario series. "Unfinished" Answer: No, it is not, nowhere near.

1. There is a single player mode, it's called cup battles, you unlock samurai gear by beating all the cups, it's awesome.

@@KC0407 Nintendo has admited in the more recent past that they're leaning towards more barebones experiences - experimenting with releasing games with less content for full prices. It's why alot of the more recent titles like Mario Tennis and Mario Parties have so much less than previous titles in the series. They sort of make up for it later with "free" updates, but it hasn't gone un noticed by long term fans. I've stopped buying these type of games for that specific reason.
Its baffling as that this game cost $59.99 compared to other Nintendo games in terms of content but with the same price point

@@spiritualsoul2711 the game is fun though so that's enough for me 🤷♂️ (also a LOT has changes since charged/super. This game has much more stuff you can do while playing and it's super cool. Also, it isn't the devs's fault this game is "unfinished". Nintendo are the ones rushing next level.)
