I made the exact same move just about a year ago. Started my retirement hobby in late 2021 with the A7iv being the first FF mirrorless camera I ever owned. It was awesome. But then came the A7RV, and well, for many of the very same reasons, I traded in the 7iv for the 7RV. No regrets whatsoever!
The one upgrade feature that has made the most difference for me is the ability to "crop all the way to Pluto", as you so eloquently described it (I am going to use that phrase forever going forward). Second is the AF - so good. And then all the other stuff you mentioned. This camera is going to last me for a LONG time.
    Welcome aboard the 7RV train!

You didn’t talk about ISO capabilities, Sony A7lV is better, dual iso at 800-3200 and the A7RV is only 800-2500 in Slog 3.

I just switched to Sony from Canon. I would have liked the A7RV, but I had to settle for an A7lV. You made lots of great points about why someone would upgrade, but I also liked that you didn't make it sound like everyone needed to upgrade to this camera.

I don’t like super high megapixel cameras for video because they have to pixel bin or line skip their 4K. The A7IV and it’s downsampling from 7K seemed like the perfect balance. It gives me the sharpest 4K footage possible and it gives me great photo crop capability

I went to the A7RV almost a year ago from the A7Riii. I was looking at the A7iv at the time. I found all these features/capabilities in the A7RV that (for me) justified paying a bit more. TBH, I rarely shoot at 61MP, but yes it's great to have. IMO, the video is a bit weak (vs A7iv) because it's pixel binned 4K. That being said, I got the A7Cii a few months ago for travel/video/backup. Lastly, if the rumors at right, I think the A7V will be the hybrid to get.

  • @bizpixvegas7651

Great video Terry. I was at WPPI and when the Sony rep told me about the variable size RAW files, I was sold on the camera. I shoot stills mostly landscapes with my RIVa for which 60MP is a must. I am going to stat shooting weddings again (ouch!) and was fretting over the 60MP files. You don't need that much resolution for a wedding. So a 15MP or 20 something MP file is great. The other feature of the RV is the advanced focusing system which would be a life saver.

I thought I wanted something with better video but after a lil souls searching I realized although I am a hybrid shooter, I’m leaning more towards photos and want to give my clients the option of large prints and 61MP is huge for me.

My main camera is the A7RV and I absolutely love it one thing no one talks about compared to the older bodies is you can have live view while using a flash which is just so much better. But there’s nothing wrong at all with the older bodies I shoot a lot of different things and I needed a second body I just picked up an a7iii as a little workhorse camera to shoot everything I don’t want to hammer my RV with and as a second camera just to take wide angles at weddings or to shoot boxing events on that really don’t need an RV to shoot and even that is surprisingly still very capable. I was looking at the a7iv but honestly you hit the nail on the head with screen I spend most of my time with my screen in tilt so having a flip out only would really throw me out

I just picked up the a7iv last week thinking that the a7rV was no good for video then quickly learned it was about the same. Have you tested the video capabilities for Real Estate interiors? I am a realtor so I shoot interior a lot. What draws me to the a7rV is the ai and stabilization as I want to start taking photos of my run club and working on a vlog series as well.

Have both and my one gripe with the A7R V is its low light performance which is an expected trade. With the A7 IV I could go up to ISO of 6400 and get clean photos. At 6400 on the A7R V taking the exact same photo with the exact same lens and settings was not as clean as the A7 IV. As fa as the full image the difference isn't visible but cropping to about 10% the IV was cleaner. At ISO 3200 it was a hard call maybe the IV just barely but the extra pixels on the V wasn't getting me anything. Had to get down to ISO 1600 for the V to be superior. This did not press the dynamic range which may have been a different story.

Own a lot (okay, all) of their focus/gimbal/transmission "ecosystem" and it's so disparate it's maddening why it's not better thought out. Super easy firmware fixes can be made to make it so much better. While I enjoy bringing AF to all my vintage lenses, swapping around through different setups it just doesn't play nice with itself. So to buy into a camera body? I dunno.
And having to activate your DJI gear to simply use it? That's just insane. Especially with their buggy auth app.

In terms of photos, the R5 is definitely the one to go with.
But, if we are talking about video only... isnt the video on the a7iv better as the 4K is downsampled from 7K, whereas on the a7RV its just straight up 4K... The 8K is overkill and not great, so comparing 4K to 4K, a7IV is better, right?

Sound like Mark 5 is final version by every time. I do see rarely if Sony (or such) Mark 6 or 7 on RX100 which used be TH-cam vlogging cameras in couple years ago. Later, that changed to ZV model for them as replacement RX100 model which is larger sensor size on naked eye. I don't know yet and rather Sony going make a whatever came out on public by keep eyes on it in future. I rather keep it for little bit longer but never know if they will comes out. Don't miss out, yet. I wait for it. Good depth video, Mr. Warfield. 💪🏼📷

Tell me how you still enjoy this camera and it's weird light metering. I personally find you need sooooo much more light to use this camera.

That's currently what I'm saving up for right now. I've got the a7IV and absolutely adore it but I really want that crop flexibility that comes with the 61MP.
And yes I will be keeping my a7IV for video stuff (once in a blue moon lol)

Fellow Clevelander here. Wow. How timely is this? I've been seriously considering trading in my Canon R5 and all my associated equipment for the Sony A7 V. My reasons are for trading up are different than yours, but it's still under serious consideraton - probably later this year. So I'd be trading my Canon ecosystem for a Sony. You mentioned all the things that rock with the A7 V, and you lightly touched on some of the things that were "iffy". Do you have a short list on what you really didn't like, or found lacking?

If this is out of your price range, start saving up for the A7V, should come out next year. Start saving like $150-200 a month and you should have enough for it once it come out.

    • @schoolstuff5235
      @schoolstuff5235 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Don’t sell, trade. Adorama and B&H won’t give you what you think. They’ll give you up to 70% of what they’ll sell it for, so if it’s in great condition you’ll get, at most, half of what you paid for it. If you use old gear as trade, you may get a better deal(credit towards a new purchase).

Yo! I can understand the a7R5 being better in everything, but are you not comparing the a7IV with the wrong class upgrade? I’ve tested the a7R5 twice for a weekend and came to the conclusion that I could not get used easily to the fact that it kept going to sleep mode to save batteries, and also: electronic shutter (10 fps) mode has no shutter sound - coming from the a9, this is very unlucky, you cannot control your bursts at all at silent mode. It might be the latest and greatest with the AI chip, but just selling it by reading the specs does not make it a very good feature, when testing it, you might wonder how you can / want to manipulate the learning process of the recognition - it turns out there is nothing you can do other than switch on /off. I expect in a few years a more mature ability, this one is still an AI baby as far as i’m concerned.
