I sailed on this ship from Southampton to New York when we emigrated from Scotland to Canada in June 1953. It was a fabulous experience. 5 nights and seasick for the first 3 days. I still have the dining room menus! Great memories!
@@yamahaguy1732 Prior to my one and only trip on the S.S. America, my only ocean going experiences were on the Clyde Steamers departing from Glasgow and down the River Clyde to various holiday destinations. Compared to those ships, S.S. America would be a 10 at least at the time. I guess by today's standards it would likely be a 5. I neglected to mention in my first comment, that my father left Scotland for New York in April, 1953. He left before me, my brother and my mother to get a job and arrange accommodation for our arrival. However, he travelled on her sister ship, the S.S. United States. He gave us a glowing tribute on his voyage too.
It's so sad to see a once great ship after so long sailing the world's seas... She was once a beautiful ship... Now seeing her like this is just emotional... Now she's returning to the seas she once sailed in...
I travelled from auckland to Southampton on this ship leaving NZ in Feb76 via Panama. I stood right on the bow mid Atlantic in a storm. Nearly shit my pant when I look down at the water. I'll never forget it.
No Say you were very lucky to have been alive when these great true ocean liners still sailed and I mean extremely lucky they don't even build ships with as much detail, craftsmanship, quality, or beauty anymore, most of the ones you see now are only massive cities on the water and if I had of been the last captain of the s.s. America my final order before stepping off the bridge would be to order her engines full ahead and have her sailed to her home port and made into a museum ship and I wouldn't care what the ships owners said at all and I would keep the ships crew and staff on hand to help maintain the ship and take care of the ship and if the ships owners tried to take the ship away I would have the ship quite literally anchored where she is docked and have it put on the national register of historic places and have it listed as a both national and civil engineering landmark
Oh my god; 16th Sept 1977; I have hundreds of memories; I was told that trip was its Maidan voyage ! Wow, that was sereal, awesome but sad (bad memories) for me; where it broke in half in the middle was where I had my worst memory; I was 9, strolling South bound on the right hand side of the promenade deck the tea lady was clinking tea cups behind me, the clinking soon turned into crashing porcelain & then she was gone. As the ship began to lean to the right I tried to figure out where I was but it was too late, I fell over onto my right side. I couldn't get up Gravity kept me down, stuck to the cold plasticy deck floor I felt the angle dip further which pressed me harder into the green circled none slip floor of the promenade deck, my head & my line of sight was straight down, down into the deepest, darkest mass of blackness - the gut wrenching deep dark hole that engulfed me still haunts me today
I have an original ship trunk that was once on board of the SS America with the original tags on it. It was once onwned by an old relative from my Mr. uncle G.u.y van Leeuwen who had sailed on this ship in the 60’s Wonderful ship and sad that it ended so sad. This ship came out of an time when they made realy beautiful ships like the Normandy, Ill the France an S.S. France. Thanks for posting this video !.
Ships Lover I was on the SS America briefly in about the mid 1950s. I was with my parents. We went out on a tender at Cobh and got on the SS America for the brief trip to France. The ship had just done the Atlantic crossing. they gave me loads of food on board; but I didn't enjoy a local bus trip in Normandy afterwards !!!!!
In a time of darkness in the world , a light emerged in the form of a ship . She serve as a beacon of hope to those who saw her . During the war she brought our fighting men and women to the horrors of warfare . When she was seen by those being sent home , she was THEIR beacon of light . To them she was a message that there fight was over . She served her masters well for the years after but she was not to last . Now the world waits for our next light in this world of darkness . E. Abandoned buildings, ships, churches or houses are not only dead constructions of wood and steel for me. They are living, breathing creatures, and they suffer the way they are treated, when people who built them dicide, they are useless now and leave them to rot and decay. To see the long and undeserving way the American Star died, makes me cry in pain, for I can hear her silent tears.
The Cunard cruise ship RMS Queen Mary 2 sailing from Southampton to New York. The captain and crew and officers and passengers were on board the Cunard Line's luxurious cruise ship RMS Queen Mary 2 sail from Southampton to New York.
She left southampton to Australia for the last time as uss australis in November 1977 the year an month I was born . Anything left of the ship is now under water.
So while towing it they ran it aground.... So no one wanted to get more boats and drag it off? Or did they and broke it in half while trying? Where's the back half now, did the tide claim it as a new reef? And why hasn't it been scraped yet? So many questions and so few answers....
The ship broke in half only 48 hours after she went aground destroying any hopes of refloating her. The stern ended up being destroyed by wave action over a period of 3 years. This section lies broken up over a wide area just below the surface. Same thing happened to the bow section in the late 2000's. I believe the wreck was never scrapped because she remained in a very exposed location (the Western side of Fuerteventura is constantly buffeted by violent gales common to the North Atlantic) which would have made any kind of salvage effort extremely difficult. There's also the insane amount that it would cost to scrap a ship of that size, it probably just wasnt financially viable to do so (as is the deal with many other shipwrecks around the world). And since she lies in a military area, I believe the Spanish Ministry of Defence claimed ownership of the vessel after she was abandoned, which probably didnt help.
Very sad to see this Great Ship end this way I sailed on her as a 9 year old with my parents, brother and baby sister from Southampton to Melbourne Australia arriving 31 march 1966. It was a very different world then.
People sure know who to screw things up. What happened to its second funnel? I guess it had a major refit at one point. Where's the rest of the ship? Only the bow section remains?
Yes , the stern collapsed between 1996 and 1998 , the funnel (wich by the way is the first funnel , not the second) was a dummy and they removed it to make the ship's shape looking more modern. IT DOES ONLY MAKES HER VERY UGLY
@000destruct7 - Thanks for the reply. Liked your video of an interesting ship I wouldn't have even known about otherwise. Of the SS America vids here I liked yours best. Peace. - R
My Father came back on the USS West Point (S.S. America) after the war in Europe. It is sad to see it all but gone on Google Earth. 28 deg 20'46.08" N: 14 deg 10'49.10" W. Use the historical timeline feature, the latest image, 2015 you will not see her. sad.
I saw it about 2000, I heard people had died trying to get ton the ship. Atlantic sea very dangerous. My friend worked on ships and said same of Greeks, and ships in their care on their last legs, not cared for.
As of 2015 rip she rotted and I wish we could save her but all that remain s is memories and stuff like furniture on sea bed and my great grandparents where where on the ship when it was an troop ship and agian in 1950 and agian in the 1970 s
OOhhh , i feel so bad for you ! When she got stranded , ss amerca was looted of all the furniture , wich was sell on Ebay or sold to collectors This makes me very angry ! AMERICA IS MY FAVOURITE SHIP AND NOW IS ONLY RUSTED SCRAP
+gauthier Chovin I think you wont find alot of the ship. I was there a few years ago and there was only a small part of the bow above the water surface :(
Can you please tell me the name of this song please? It's beautiful. I have heard it before but not sung this way. It was on another cruise ship video.
it broke off and got swept out to sea somewhere. They don't know exactly but they have ideas. crazy right? how that huge chunk can just disappear like that? power of the sea!
Yes , the first "dummy" smokestack was removed to make her look more modern. She looks sooo bad with that ugly red funnel with a weird thing spitting out

Jim Boult so compared to a modern cruise ship on a scale from 1-10. 1 being close to modern ships and 10 being better than them what would she be
I can imagine!

A classic ship and a classic wreck, a work of art to the very sad unfortunate end.
What a sad ending for such a glorious vessel.
So sad to see that beautiful ship like that. BTW, this song gave me the chills - very emotional.

I sailed on the SS AMERICA when I was very young with my family.. This video makes me very sad.
I know the feeling.
The SS United States is the great ship they must save. Incredible ship. It still holds the Blue Riband. fastest Liner ever.

Epic video, one of my favorites.
I actually have a picture of me with my dad , standing infront of the ship in 2004, it was still completely above water. beautifull

SS America really deserved better. I love the Hymn, Eternal Father, Strong To Save.
I sailed from Melbourne to Southampton in 1977
I sailed on the Australis in 1967: Melbourne- Southampton. This is so sad.
Superb tribute!
i hope 1 day the government gets off there I phone and say why are we letting the pride of amarica rot in some empty dock
My Grandfather was a fire inspector on the SS America in the early 60's.
Beautiful. The ship is underwater now guys.

My grand-uncle was a steward on America and he stays she started to decline when she was sold to the Greeks, who began to neglect her
Moving tribute, what happened to the other half of the ship, was it salvaged for scrap or did it break up completely?
The second option.
Thought that might be the case. thanks.
Poor baby, sounds like she was built and lead a rather rough life. Always sad to see ships die and fade away.
What up with the song that every ship sinks, I thought this song was for britannic
Sadly ships of her caliber have slowly faded into the history books. It's truly a loss.
Pretty good video as long as you mute it before watching
i have a relative that sailed on the Britannic, the sister ship of the titanic.
He died by a mine didnt he
Ethan Joyce So did I.
callerofmusic, you'll have fun getting aboard since the ship has fallen to starboard and is almost completely submerged!
what is this song? i love it but i can never remember the name to look it up again
Sleeping Sun by Nightwish.
+John Bedard the live version is better

AMERICA IS MY FAVOURITE SHIP AND NOW IS ONLY RUSTED SCRAP
has the ship been battered to the point that it ripped apart after slipping below the waves or is the bow somewhat intact on its side?
The voyage of the Queen Mary 2.
Hello, i go to Fuerteventura tomorrow, do you know the name of the beach or how i can find it, i am a photographer and could be a great shot! Thanks
+gauthier Chovin I think you wont find alot of the ship. I was there a few years ago and there was only a small part of the bow above the water surface :(
thank you, local poeple told me the ship disappeared completely now...!
What happened to the back end of the ship?
Where the heck is the bow?
It's callecd "stern"
It collapsed underwater in few years
Sorry you are right,i always get confused with it.
No problem
what happend with the 2nd part of the ship?
It collapsed
Collapsed into the sea
+Synester Gates (kevosso) It sank in 1996. 2 years after the ship ran aground.
Was a very photogenic wreck. :)
Would have to be one of the most beautiful and mysterious wrecks. A photographer's dream.
@000destruct7 What's the song :)?
Saw this wreck in about 2007
What is up with the cornball music ?? Gawd lol 😂
What happened to the stern
Why made it break in half
Because of the waves
Why else it's the song they for the titanics sister ship
The ship is no longer visible. I has slipped beneath the waves
Six
theres nothing left of it anymore sadly, its just some visible scrap of it left
so sad im crying
Is the ship still here or is it gone?
It is gone :(
Sunk on Fuerteventura, Spain
All the waves?
Ah?
Shes long gone she still siting there just she fell over one day.
Yea, maybe a hundred meter under the sea haha
Can you please tell me the name of this song please? It's beautiful. I have heard it before but not sung this way. It was on another cruise ship video.
Sleeping Sun.
The Navy Hymn
SS America is the worst shipwreck before the RMS Lusitania.
good. she is not scraped
What's the song
sleeping sun night wish
Nightwish Sleeping Sun
It is an old hymn "For those in Peril on the Sea"
This is Nightwish.. Am I wrong?
She slipped off of a tug line in a storm. Then they found her there and it was not found possible to float her or financially viable.
So wear is the second half
it broke off and got swept out to sea somewhere. They don't know exactly but they have ideas. crazy right? how that huge chunk can just disappear like that? power of the sea!
Isn't it great that people can get away with not cleaning up after themselves!?
@000destruct7 Thank you for confirming this! :)
this ship was built on my birthday well august 31st 1939 i was not born to august 31st 1985
Better to be a ship of any kind than scrap metal.
I'm sure a high stake insurance payment was involved on this supposed accident!!!
The end of an era images are from the 24/1/1994.
so sad song send chill up back
so she went from double stacks to a single?
1978-1994 www.explorermagazin.de/amstar/amhist1_e.htm
Yes , the first "dummy" smokestack was removed to make her look more modern.
She looks sooo bad with that ugly red funnel with a weird thing spitting out
Such a small cruise
where's the stern?
Some time later, da stern colapsed so only the bow rest above the sea
Why don't they get it out of the water? That is contamination.
sad.
ill try to make a homenage of this ship and build she in roblox
r.i.p ss america ;-;
why is it every big ship that everyone thinks is going to be amazing just sinks
So sad to see -
Also she was used as a china gun target practice then chinna army abandond the amreica when the bow began to fall apart
that was the amarican star not the ss america 2 diffrenet ships :(
+slogotank it is the same ship. It was renamed some years before the accident
Just like America we have been sell outs, lost our identity many times, divided, slowly deteriorated, sinking and fading away.
yes sadly as An American i must agree
All steel returns to its natural state on earth - rust (iron oxide) - its where all things made from steel return to. And its natural
very sad
🚢
It would have been better if she was sunk. Being wreck in some godforsaken beach is almost as bad as scrapping. Goodbye SS America.
but this video reminds me too much of that ship
fuck that bathtub!!!where's my torch???? I need $$$!!!!
just like the titanic
here
pinekushdude, the united states was recently bought. and is going to be refitted, and will be back in service
Real American iron there not cheap Japanese steel and plastic!
noooo:'( boo hoo
You have little understanding of punctuation and grammar evidently.
Lol cringe worthy music. I had to stop.
Great video ruined by awful music!!
