Fabulous nostalgic footage. We sailed from Fremantle to Southampton 1972. Oddly enough my mum always referred to it as The Greek Ship. It was a marvellous voyage. Sad to see the way it ended up.
I was on this ship, the second sailing (which was its last sailing under the new owners), it was to be a 5 day cruise, the ship departed the NYC port on July 3, 1978 under the ship name SS America (some NY businessmen that formed the business and were counting on the casino for the main revenue stream - the name of the corporation was Venture Cruise Lines of NY), it departed from NY and had 2 ports of call, Nova Scotia and Martha's Vineyard. I was 13 at the time and was with my family and grandparents too. I took many photos of the filth and unfinished work, the pool was closed, there were old mattresses in hallways, toilets overflowing and didn't work, dirty towels and linens strewn about as well, they were still painting and varnishing and repairing most areas of the ship while we were on board. I saw cock roaches and certain areas on board the ship stunk. On top of it all we were lucky to be alive because we hit very high seas on the way to Halifax, Nova Scotia (Martha's Vineyard port of call was cancelled due to the inclement weather), the waves were about 15 to 20 feet (Atlantic Ocean storm), remember this was a tiny cruise ship when compared to the mega cruise ships of today. The crew even had safety lines (ropes) along the walls of the hallways on all decks and everyone was seasick including some of the crew. When we returned from Nova Scotia I had my photo taken from a UPI photographer that was on the dock, we were still on board on the upper decks all with our thumbs down, that photo appeared on the front page of the NY Daily News. A lot of famous people had been on this ship prior to me during its 50 plus years in service, including former Presidents Ronald Reagan and John F Kennedy, Madeline Albright, Ferry Porsche and his son Ferdinand Porsche, Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich, Queen Frederika of Greece and Grace Kelly.
tiny cruise ship? she was an ocean liner designed by Francis Gibbs to do the atlantic run. i would bet money she took heavy seas better than any modern "cruise ship" of today.
My wife, my child and myself embarked on the Australis in Southampton in 1974. The ship couldn't go via the Suez due to a dispute so, we had to go via Cape -Town, This meant stopping at Las Palmas near where the Australis met her final destination and became a shop wreck years later. We disembarked at Fremantle Western Australia after a trip that took 3 weeks and two days. Great mem ories.
I almost wanted to say that she did not ground near la Palmas but rather on playa de Garcey on fuertventura but than i searched up and found out la palmas is part of the Canary Islands
I knew chandris was big in ocean liners but I honestly never knew how truly big this company was. I am amazed. This company was truly a giant of the seas for so many decades.
It was a great ship. My Mother and I came back to England from New Zealand in 1970 on it, it took over six weeks, I was five at the time, must have drove my mother crazy, and the ship caught on fire ,thats another story,
Matthew Cox yeah but nature took her..And the Panama Lines almost ruined her..😒yeah she was a beauty in that navy blue and blue red and black funnels but it was Half finished!!
holy moly damnit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've only seen the decay and for giving actual insight og the inside of the magnificient beauty of how it was before it failed. rip (whate ever it was titeled)
What a "cluster" America Cruise Line, later Venture Cruises group (New York businessmen) turned out to be. Tried to rip-off the passengers by putting the ship to sea when it clearly was nowhere near ready. I hope these business people paid dearly for their unscrupulous behaviour.
Thank you so much for that post! I can't understand why all those nice ships are scraped (or wrecked) and all those new ugly cruise ships are around the world with no class. I 'am too young and never had the chance to had a trip on a real LINER. I hope they will save the SS United States. If I could do, i would!
we still do have some classic cruise ships that were unfortunately scrapped in addition The MS Stockholm and Queen mary 2 are the last Ocean liners to be in service please note Queen Mary 2 was classified as a Ocean liner there used to be some surviving ocean liners but unfortunately scrapped those being SS Independence and many more SS Independence did suvived along time Uuuup until 2010 when she was wrecked at india and scrapped makes me sad because SS Independence was also a classic Ocean liner and along side Queen mary since that the S.S United States is the only American Ocean liner to survive it just sucks to see the classic Ocean liner era die including the Last Royal mail ship to be in service RMS St Helena witch was out in service last year but will be returning soon
I wanna know how you managed to use the "somewhere in time" soundtrack without getting a copyright problem. Seriously, I'm not being a smartass. Great informative vid by the way
Was the video that got removed the one I have never been able to find on youtube which I viewed Id say 7 years ago with true video footage, not pictures of the beginning to end demise of the ss American Star? There are so many listings now a days, have never been able to find it again.
No. The only difference to the one I removed and this one was a piece of music I had to replace. The visual content is exactly the same. Hope you find the one you're looking for.
You forgot to include that the ocean liner was wrecked after the ship was being towed to Thailand and was broken off during the storm. How the ship was wrecked, it ran aground in the canary islands and was subsequently battered by waves until there was nothing left.
As far as whether the SS UNITED STATES is saved or scrapped, Why not let the people decide? On every ballet during a election, just have an option, would you like to donate 20 dollars to SAVE THE SS UNITED STATES AND RESTORATION FUND? if the majority want to save it, that should bring in more than enough. If not, we need to let it go. Me? I would gladly donate and hope the funds would be reached. If not, then I would prefer her to become an artificial reef.
I travelled back to the UK on her, via the Pamam Canal, in 1967. We docked in Southampton in February.

Sailed on this when it was the SS AMERICA, in 1952,…Southampton to NY. Thank you John Dunlea

Very well done, excellent choice of music and story, very dignified and respectful of a grand lady of the sea.
Good to hear it again John. Great job mate.
Fine engineering. Gibbs and Cox newport news VA, William Francis Gibbs. This ship served in the war.
I knew chandris was big in ocean liners but I honestly never knew how truly big this company was. I am amazed. This company was truly a giant of the seas for so many decades.
Thanks for the video. I sailed around the world in her once as the Australis, she was really something.. a great experience.
Wow!!! Way better than today's ships???

She’s such a beautiful ship, It’s really a shame what happened to her.

holy moly damnit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've only seen the decay and for giving actual insight og the inside of the magnificient beauty of how it was before it failed. rip (whate ever it was titeled)
Beautiful ship at one time.

Great use of John Barry’s music score from “ Raise the Titanic “
sad story like all things in life there is a beginning and an end
James Zografos That is very true! It had to end at some point for the SS America, otherwise who knows what would have happened to her.
@Diezel Parisius Yes! In Thailand. I think she had bad luck during that trip.
Is this the ship that found its end on a beach on Fuerteventura island Spain?
Yes, but it is totally gone. It is nothing but underwater debris
If I am a very rich man, I would like to take over and make it my paradise
It's completely under water now.
Raising the Titanic Music ..
Good ol American star
Chandris line X

that last bid to get her working again was such a fail. like putting lipstick on a pig.

Omg 😱

This episode of the ships history is fully covered in part 6 of the series Jiovany.
Ok
Was she scrapped?
No she ran aground
She was scrapped by the brutal waves
so the mob brought the ship to use it as a floating casino
Deverian pegalos e restauralos.
im watching Raise the Titanic.................wait, what?
No just the music xd
similar to the SS UNITED STATES
Thats because the SS America was launched and built years before SS United states
