My great uncle Kenneth Sutherland was once the captain of this majestic ship. Our family is very proud of him and this wonderful vessel. When he retired he was the Superintendent of the U.S. Lines, all 53 ships.

My dad was a first officer and remembers leaving England a day earlier than the United States did. By the next day the United States was in view, the bow wave 20-30 feet high. By the end of the day she was out of sight.

There is indeed a difference between an ocean liner and a purpose built cruise ship - and while United States may have indeed had her days numbered from the get go - she is still an ocean liner! There is merit enough in restoring her for that reason alone. She is part of time, long gone, that we as a nation knew how to come together.

Chapter 1 captures the unique reasons why passengers and crew were enamoured with this magnificent Lady. My family was treated like royalty in tourist class! The SSUS design was fresh and crisp, from bold smokestacks to cocktail picks, as patriotic colors reflected the pride of America's top craftsmen. She deserves to be outfitted appropriately, representing the best America still has to offer.

Way back in the 50's when I was about nine years old my father and I built a beautiful plastic model of the SS United States. Dad made a display case from wood and plastic sheet to keep it clean. It remained on display for many years in our home until Dad passed away. Since moving a great distance would likely have damaged it I passed it on to my cousins sons. It was something he and I were proud of and something I will always remember as something we did together. A model appears in a display case at 6:13 in this video, very much like ours was.

I am convinced this ship should be restored and become our foreign aid response vessel. She has record speed so she can be anywhere in no time at all. She has HUGE capacity so she can make fresh water and provide housing to those in need. And she will represent our country proudly. No brainer!

Ben DeLong 100's of tons of fuel oil a day to power it. The EPA or Obama would never allow that. He would probably allow if they changed the name to the "SS I hate the United States" though. Maybe they should just put a Hemi in it.

    • @jeffpuha8187
      @jeffpuha8187 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Unfortunately, she's just an empty shell. She's been almost completely gutted. Much of her power plant is still intact, but it would be almost impossible to refurbish it. The engines are over 60 years old and haven't run for 45 years. The entire power plant would have to be replaced, almost certainly with a diesel rig. She wouldn't be able to come close to her former speed. Figuring the cost of that. plus totally rebuilding the interior in some configuration, I estimate it would cost 300-400 million dollars. No one seems willing to put up even a fraction of that.
The Conservancy has a lot of passion, but they have no money. They can't even decide on a suitable goal for the ship's refurbishment.
I am a proud American, and I love the SS UNITED STATES, but I fear nothing constructive will become of her. I hope I'm wrong.

She was more than a ship. She was an ambassador and representative of our nation and people and a symbol of what we aspired for. It's despicable that she's been so abused and neglected while those with the ability and power to do something about it have done nothing for so long.

I stopped by the and took my first look in person last Sunday (Nov. 11, 2018) on my way to an Eagles Game. Brought a tear to my eye seeing such a fine lady used up and left for the dogs. It really is a crime that this ship is not the pride of the United States of America. It should be funded by congress and turned into a goodwill/hospital ship. The next time one of the US major cities gets wrecked by ever more frequent hurricanes send SS United States down to help.

I love all passenger liners crossing the Atlantic Ocean and have my own opinion about each one. In the SS United States, only the huge HP installed in her Engine Room brought her fame. Other than that, I do not see much of a difference between her and big European liners like both British Queens and German Bremen and Europa. For me, the French SS NORMANDIE existed and still exists in my heart above all others. I am not French if some of you will want to criticize me.

I will be paying a visit to her in May before the Lenfest money runs out. I understand your constant frustration with my generation but we are really not much different from your own. This may sound absolutely crazy, bit perhaps with the advent of the Trump Administration, new pride in American and the prosperity that's hoped to be created, there may be the funds available to restore the ship. I'd be happy to see a cosmetic restoration of the exterior and a permanent display made of the ship. It's unfortunate the ship wasn't kept under the auspices of the US Navy and preserved if only for special occasions, such as a royal yacht. The pride of the American people that created this ship is needed once again to save it.

It is so ridiculous to 'hurry' and hassle through airports to foreign destinations to attempt to 'relax' when the solution to worries and tension was there all along in the relaxing ocean cruise rolling along with grace and aplomb, yet abandoned for profit reasons. Worst of all, is to witness our envious foreign inferiors buy and plunder our treasures( like the Big U) because we let such treasures go away. At age 9, having observed the sinking of the SS Andrea Doria on tv, I think it should be a national ambition to never allow such an engineering masterpiece fall into neglect. Every American should consider themselves to be an invested partner in her return to glory. Like our flag itself, we must never let it fall down or to ruin.

This vessel has to be saved....for the dignity of our national heritage if nothing else. Surely, she'll never go to sea again, but having her refurbished as a floating museum/ convention center/ hotel would be very feasible indeed. A combination of government and private funding could be used. After all......we spent HUNDREDS OF $$$$BILLIONS$$$$ on a useless healthcare bill that's doomed to fail. And unlike the Affordable Care Act, the BIG U is still pretty(chipped paint, rust, and all) and worth saving.

+恵勇気 So you think I'm ignorant on history? Well I think you're pretty ignorant on reality. To begin with, those wars aren't illegal. The enemy brought the fight to us, now they're paying for it. And how can you say not a single American has benefited? Not having any more terrorist attacks like we had on 911 is the best benefit of all. We destroyed most of the terrorist training camps in Afghanistan. And yes, I'm proud we're giving money to the Israelis, and military equipment to boot. Israel is the only true Middle Eastern country with the balls to conquer Islamic terrorism, and they're our only true ally. If you think Cheney and Rumsfeld are criminals, then you're selectively blind to the crimes committed by your own party. Obamacare is not a benefit. People who couldn't afford insurance before definitely can't afford it now, and they're forced to pay for something they never even wanted. You liberals have had your 5 minutes in the spotlight, and the audience isn't clapping. They could give you people every red cent of the national budget, and you'd still be begging for more to fuel your ridiculous and wasteful pipe dream of socialism.

We will NEVER accomplish anything unless we come together - that is how we fought back against the Japanese and were able to ultimately win the war, conquering their imperialism and Hitler's insanity.

cant agree more. the insurance that obamacare forces us to buy is useless garbage and doesnt cover anything. what good is an "insurance" policy that has a duductable of thousands of dollars? and now you are forced to take it or you get fined. i love people that think this provides insurance for those who did not have insurance prior. really what it does is make people pay for crap they cannot afford. make healthcare truely affordable. $40 per week family plan, $20 co-pay and nothing more....... anything else is a joke. the prevailing wage has not increased to pay for this crap.

Well here is a idea to save the SS United States. As we watch al the documentaries, and the fact that she was stripped of all her interior features, how about the Conservancy consider repurposing her to be a Hospital and or rescue ship that would be able to transport vital material and or medical aid to anywhere on the planet.
Another idea, since in 2 years, the United States of America will be celebrating it's 250 years of Independence, so the ship could be outfitted as a floating museum with artifacts on display of all the progress that has made America great.
I would also think that the SS United States should find it's new home on the Hudson River, in lower New York City.

She’s a beautiful ship and she was built at a time ( post war ) when America was strong and proud ! America was unified and built this beautiful girl ! I think at the very least she should be dry docked and cleaned up on the out side and let her stand as a once proud America ,like the (Statue or Liberty. )And then during her time in dry dock (over many years ) we can chip away at her restoration! But she must be able to stand as a symbol of America Strong !

Did you know the SS United States has a half sister? It's the USS Enterprise of course! Though serving two different purposes, both ships broke new grounds in their designs. Sadly we will not be able save the Big E so let's save the Big U.

The Hales Trophy exists, the SSUS did win it in 1952, but its record has been broken. Three times over. The Blue Riband only was awarded for ships in regular service, Hales is fastest passenger crossing (doesn’t have to be in regular scheduled service).
While impressive, the Blue Riband is no longer awarded, so there are no subsequent winners.
Achievements are achievements but there’s not really a need to overdo it.

It's just because she's named what she's named. Otherwise I don't think people would care. American's are very gullibly patriotic. Just slap a cool name on it and make a shitty song and people will feel some sort of unmotivated patriotism.

I believe the SS United States is the most beautiful creation ever crafter by the hand of man. I have a couple of questions about her. Mounted in the very bow of the ship is an anchor -- much smaller than the port and starboard anchors. Is there a specific purpose for this third anchor? Also, on the very top of the forward edge of the forward funnel is a vertical protrusion. It isn't part of the steam whistle. I know what it's not but don't have a clue what it IS. Can someone answer either or both of these questions?

We are a Capitalist society, and capitalists only buy things that make them more money. When the ship lost its ability to do that it was stripped of everything valuable and left to rust away.

I have read on the internate that the conservancy is paying out $70 thousand to $90 thousand dollars per month in expenses. Most of it probably going to the dock owner? How long can they keep doing this? They have owned the ship now for two years. And I don't see anything happening?

Most of it made of aluminium ,even cutting boards in the galley. If she would have been used as a troop ship, and carried as many troops as Queen Mary ,she would be in for a big surprise. Still she should be completely restored ,originally to her former glory . Not saying she was a bad ship ,she was great, just the wrong time, thanks to jet travel.

Unfortunately there is no way to make a profit off of restoring her to a cruise line. However, I'd like to see her in the same way USS Intrepid is now. The engines would work and she could participate in seafaring activities (Fleet Week?). A working, floating museum and monument to American achievement would be great at a time when people need to reminded of what this country has and still can achieve when it puts its head down and works toward a goal.
