- This is one of two videos showing rare footage of the American Star, the footage is from an old German documentary about the ship called Das Wrack der America which was made in 1999.
The second part is the American Star as she was in June 1999 and shows the interior of the wreck as well as a beautiful light display at night by German artist Klaus Berends.
I would like to credit my friend and ship enthusiast Henry Brayshaw for allowing me to share his copy of the footage for us to see.
Waited years to see this documentary! So glad it’s finally on here, cheers for the upload much appreciated. Shame she’s pretty much gone now
Alex Eden I appreciate the kind thoughts! There is a bar on Fuerteventura that has bits and pieces from the ship.
I went to that bar a few years back but sadly it was shut that day, but I saw bits of the ship through the windows.
Much respect to the German crew that gave a great send off to a ship with a rich history before she became one with the sea.
She was a magnificent sight when she was fully illuminated, my parents got me out of bed to see her arrive in Auckland harbour early one morning in 1973, before we travelled on her the following year. She looked like a golden caterpillar (the way I described it as a 8 year old) every window and porthole was lit and there were strings of light fore and aft, unmistakeable even from our living room window a few miles away.
That’s beautiful that they put lights on the ship to commemorate a time when this beautiful ship was in its day!!! So sad when history artifacts disappear.. 🥲
Wonderful tribute. i went to the uk on her in 1967 from NZ
Same thing happened to the American Star's long lost cousin the SS American Pride ship wreck but in 1998 a man by the name of Justin Calvin put lights in her for 3 days aboard the grounded vessel and he also put a radio inside her playing Bobby Daren's Somewhere Beyond the sea.He did this as a tribute as a remembrance of when she was the SS Red Star which would have been a happyer time in her life when she was crossing the Atlantic in the 40's and 50's.
Thst is not true.....I had put on the lights....in 1999....therefore they had made the documental film

@@klausberends7655 I think your lying
@@klausberends7655 wie heißt das Lied (und Interpret), welches am Ende des Videos aus dem Schiff tönt?
Its crazy how this big ship once standing is now completely under water
It doesn’t even exist anymore
Fue un Gran BARCO y héroe que no debió terminar así, que diseños tan hermoso tenía ♥
I’m glad they did this, but it was crazy, shortly after this wreck collapsed into the sea. I would never have taken the risk
And that's why we call you guppy-steten.
the most inspiring video i have seen for a long time! I wish born 10 years earlier, there were so manny beautiful things left back then (in the 1990ish).
You never know how big these ships are till you're right up next to them
This brings tears to my eyes. I find it painful to watch.
Linda Pape What is your connection to the ship?
@@matthewcox6615 I was a passenger on 11 Chandris cruises and 2 Chandris voyages. I travelled with my disabled father , who was a paraplegic, when I was between the ages of 17-29. I felt like crew as I danced in many of the shows and on 2 voyages, I assisted Michael Chalambrous with teaching Zorba. I also assisted with the port lectures on the voyages, as the passengers couldn't understand the accent of the officer! I started to take Greek lessons while at university (I was really studying music) and often sang at the Greek club in Melbourne.

I should've listened in German class
The tragedy of these thing is how the SS United States, a later larger successor of this ship by the same designer is still afloat (but stripped) today, and can't seem to get any funding or a future set in stone. Like anything it comes down to money and a return on investment.
Here bc of BSF😊
That video is gone now
Im gunna go watch ghost ship now
Only five years, and it looked like this...
7:17 Ich habe das Schiff noch gesehen...unheimlich
OMG How is the room at 4:07 in such pristine condition?!?!
This was taken before it was wrecked. She was called Alferdoss by then when it was taken.
It looks that it is only me who stole nothing from the ship.
I don't know what it is with ships. But they all end up on ocean floor, or under the tourches in Alang
💋
She has a twin sister the SS United States that’s been docked in Philadelphia almost 30 years now.
Soon she will be an artificial reef in Florida around Deston 🪸
They are not sisters....
