02 4x4 sport edition currently 500k miles. Still runs strong. I absolutely love my 4runner. I'm also a owner of a first gen dodge 4x4 short bed and 71 international pick up 4x4. And I still love driving my 4runner.

We are a Toyota family. My wife drives a 2012 Rav4, and I have an 08 Tundra, and a 2000 SR5 4Runner. Pretty Decked out with leather, sunroof, and hood scoop, black in color, and it looks pretty badass. Glad you mentioned the Tundra brake upgrade. Just after I bought it, I put calipers, rotors and pads on it. Three different trips to the parts store, finally had to drag the old parts in, and we were all shock to find it had full size Tundra brakes! Just put a mild 3" lift on it, and it looks even better. I get ask at least once a week if I would sell it. Thanks for the great Video!
This is peak engineering folks. I have a bone-stock 2002 4Runner SR5 with 253K miles and it is still a joy to drive. I’m starting to get some of that infamous frame rust, but I don’t care. I’m getting a frame restoration done even if it costs me. Over the countless cars I’ve owned over the years, the Gen3 4Runner is like no other.
This is one of the beat reviews of any vehicle I’ve ever seen. So detailed but not over detailed. Just right. I cant wait to see more reviews on used cars. Keep up the good work, it will go off soon enough
I own two 86 4-Runners, a 96, a 97, and a 2005. All with over 300,000 hard miles. One of the 86s has 440,000 miles -- lots of them in low-lock. Of all these, without a doubt, my 96 3.4l, manual transmission 4-Runner is my favorite. It is the baby with only 310,000 miles. I use them for pilot car work in the winter and for working archaeology in remote locations when it is warm. I literally live in them for days or weeks at a time. Synthetic oil and keeping track of the timing belt miles is the key to the longevity.
Are these interference engines ? If the belt goes on my 2001 4runner will my 3.4 6cylinder engine be ruined totally ? New to me at 226,000 miles.. Thx...
I have a '96 3rd Gen. It spent its first 8 years in Japan so is a Surf not 4Runner. It is a 3 litre diesel, but accelerates like a hot hatch. It has enough guts to tow an artic (done that twice in the snow!). After 15 years with it I'm in no rush to change it. Best car I've ever owned!
Parents own a 2000 4Runner . Besides regular oil changes and a timing belt replacement recently. It literally has no problems and runs great at 238k miles
3rd Gen snobs will agree with me that the TRUE HOLY GRAIL is the Thundercloud Gray 2000 SR5 Sport, 5 speed manual, with rear locker. Great video, thanks for sharing. Love my 2002 SR5
‘02 SR5 - Sport in Thundercloud, Dealer took the first 2 miles on the odometer, the rest are mine, I still love that stupid thing like it was the first day
It simple, it's not only a Toyota but it's a JAPANESE built Toyota. It's not surprising these are tanks when the Land Cruiser comes out of the same factory
Yep. Im also in Alabama and have a 99 mirror image truck as this one in the video and regularly see 3 more just like mine running around in my County and im looking at those dudes down my nose thinking WTF! smh i dont like seeing mirror image vehicles like mine running around my town wtf
I've owned my 98 Toyota 4Runner for a little over 10 years and I wouldn't give it up for nothing if I had the money I'd buy a 4Runner for everyday of the week third generation of course 😁💕
I have the holy grail. 2000 with diff lock. Second owner. 150K, always garaged and meticulously maintained by previous owner. They are great for all the reasons above but you really don't know how crazy good these things are until you go offroad. Plus, we don't really know how far they'll go- many are above 300K with no problems. Some at 500K. I suspect we'll be seeing them with a million miles in the next few years.
The interior trim is real wood, not fake. The '99 boasted the highest clearance of any gen 3, due to taller coil springs for that year. I replaced the tired coils in mine with OEM fronts and Old Man Emu rears, with Bilsteins all around. 330k...runs like new, everything works. Never been stuck. Most reliable vehicle I've ever owned.
Sold my 97 I had lifted it was a sr5 but I put a lot of work into and sold it and regretted it every day just bought another 97 limited with a rear e locker and I’m excited
I have a 98' Limited, just clocked 165K and except for a jell-coat problem on the hood with the paint, everything has been great... I pretty much, love everything about this truck... Thanks, Moses...
Killer guide. Bought my first 2 years ago. A lifted and armored 99 sr5 e-locker with 300k. Now has a dead motor but have bought a 2000 limited 2wd and a 97 4x4 5speed with a rusted body but great frame. I’m thinking I’ll move the drive line from the 97 into the 99 and have a 5sd and put the best of what’s left on the limited making it a 4x4 limited automatic. Scrap out the 97 body and the 2000 2wd frame and parts. I also have 2 94 4runners. One came with a crate 3.4l and the other has a 5speed. Total cost of these separate trucks is $900 until you add the 5 speed truck broke the bolt on tongue loose about a mile into a long drive home and tore the plastic bumper on my gals 2016 4runner and then blew a trailer tire a week later when I had to go back for it. That’s about $750 in body work, a tire and diesel. The 3 3rd gen trucks I’m all in at about $6k not including a tundra brake job(calipers found at junk yard) and full replacement Dobinson 2” lift suspension. I’ve since quit my job and as I explore a new career direction I feel like custom appointed Toyota trucks will have a place at the table when I make my plan. The second gen trucks will get more modified and at least one heavily. Just fell in love with the first one I bought and have stalked deals on them ever since.
I don't know if there's not another auto manufacturer that tops Toyota. Countless decades of superiority in regards to economic-performance and luxury. Lexus, 4Runner, JZ motors, Supra.. just seems to keep getting better and expands on their initial moniker "I love what you do for me.. Toyota!!" I was once a pro GM guy, buying nothing but GM vehicles (Camaro/Corvette/Trans/Am (Pontiac) RIP :( It took Lexus for me to realize that greatness that is Toyota. Customer oriented, luxury, plenty of revolutionary accolades within the company spanning 40+ years and onward. I know I might be sounding like a fan-boy, but I'll admit.. Toyota is just ahead of the game in the JDM market.
@ consider the VIN... if it doesn't start with a J, it's assembled here in the states.... and it bugs me that corporate rat race has made our product.... less then it should be.
I remember back in the day when the big 3 got this slogan to buy american, all the fools felt for it, when i got a toyota truck, they would be in the shop all the time when i drove by them and laughing all the way to the bank saving. I will buy american when they build a better car, as long as they keep building shit hell no im not buying. Im not a fool. Right now i dont own anything american, i got 3 toyota, 2 tundra and 1 4runner all v6 like this video here, all i just bought within a year.
2000 Black LTD 4x4 with Oak Leather and diff locker. I've put in a double-din bluetooth Pioneer, lifted 2 inches with Bilsteins and am about to replace both front seat leathers and add heaters. I'll never give this truck up.
Well said. I daily a 2001 Limited and love it. I wheel it lightly, but I'm very happy with how well it does off road too. First Toyota, but I'm already a fan boy.
Excellent review, i bought the last year of gen 3 4runner brand new in 2002, limited, did the tundra front brake upgrade years ago due to the constant warpage after heavy braking events, i tell everyone this gen was the best one Toyota ever made because its repairable. Still have it till this day, only 76000 miles, dam, she aint even broken in yet.
Great job on your descriptions, especially the minute details. Watching your video I have a new appreciation of my '99 Limited which I've owned for 4 years (188K). I stumbled on it at a car dealership. It was a little more than I was planning to spend, but I was well aware of Toyota's reliability so decided to do it. Thanks for your time and effort.
Bought a 3rd gen limited 2wd (1999) with 332k miles on it for $3.3k. I now have put about $1k in repairs for it (previous owner did not maintain it properly and was on a lot for over a year) and now it runs like a beauty. I love it.
Like so many others on here, I’m so happy with my 3rd Gen! I’ve got a 2002 SR5 4 wheel drive with 180,000 miles. Runs so smooth, plan to keep it around a long time!
My dad bought a 2001 SR5 and put over 325,000 miles and still running strong. He uses it everyday for hauling lumber, bikes, and once a 75 inch TV with no sweat.
I have been searching for one of these for the better part of a year, Found a 99 Limited dark green over gold, 4x4 with 275k miles, the more I learn about it I think I stole it at 4 grand, it's in great condition and everything works, needs a few repairs, front brakes, tires, windshield, fluid changes, etc. Looking forward to a little trail driving!
My friend drives a 3rd gen 4runner by accident. His grandfather gave it to him when he turned 16. But he probably is gonna sell it to me so I guess that statement is still true xD
I got really lucky with mine. I got a 1996 Limited minimal rust (for the midwest) for $3500. I've had it for almost two years now and still absolutely enamored by it.
This is one of the best video car review formats I've ever since, to the point and direct with all the needed and wanted information. I hope to get one of these "holy grail" ones one day, but maybe the 2001-2002 Limited as I've heard you can install an aftermarket rear diff locker and have the cake and eat it as well.
Just found my Holy Grail. 2000 Limited 4x4 Rear Locker and 4.30:1 axle ratios. I like that the 3rd Gen is smaller. Also have a 5th Gen Pro that I also like but the 3rd Gen is more nimble. Great vid! Thank you👍
Another awesome review, man. This generation of 4Runner was among the best products Toyota ever brought to our market. If these were put back into production today, exactly as this one is, I'd be at the dealership tomorrow. If ever there was one quirk I found with them, it was that they had the pickup/Tacoma's slightly unusual seating position up front. I remember my feet feeling extended more in front of me than below me. This wasn't so much a problem, it was just unusual. I don't remember sitting quite like that in any other vehicle I've been in. Keep up the great work with these videos!
i drive a 2001 SR5 just hit 150,000 miles today. I have been asked 5 or 6 times if I want to sell it. I have 3 people currently waiting for me to sell it (i won't). Last year the catalytic converter finally went (I drove it over a year by cleaning it) but it eventually went. $400 for an aftermarket one. Also changed the radiator. Other than that, basic tune ups, brakes and i change oils religiously (trans, engine and diff) This truck is just getting broken in. Engine is strong, transmission shifts strong and tight. No better truck you could buy for $5,000. I use this truck to drive back home between Vermont and New York (260 miles). It does it every month at 75-80mph with no issues. You find me a 20 year old truck that does this.
First video I’ve seen that actually explains the “4WD” button on shifter actually puts it into an all wheel drive mode and full 4WD comes on with activation of locking center diff, nicely done.
I love 4runners and will never venture outside of any SUVs. I got 2001 3rd Gen SR5 with 235k and counting as my daily. I’ve had it for 19yrs and still very reliable. Worth the investment
I own a 2002 3rd gen. That’s my baby;) bought her with 147,000 miles as Christmas gift in 2013 from my mom 💕. She now has 275,000 miles. Mostly highway miles . Best truck ever! And she’s a beauty pearl white!! Always get heads turning!! Put nice rims and tires on her! Just put new catylic converters onher and dual exhaust!! I’ll never get rid of her! Even if I get a new one.
8 months ago, a rich guy here in Alaska paid to have a ‘97 4Runner Limited 4WD shipped from Maryland. He later decided to donate it to a church or charity. I am a pastor and Special Ed school bus driver that is the grateful recipient of this fine machine. I currently have 28,150 miles on it through 5 weeks of holding its title. I am afraid to take it on the beach even though I could next summer, because I don’t want to rust the rear axle welds/frame. Lord willing, I’d love to get 15 years out of it.
Although I LOVE my 2000 Limited with rear locker and multi mode 4wd, the Achilles Heal of the 3rd gens are: Lower ball joints, rear axle seals, and the dreaded pink milkshake. 2 of which I have already dealt with and moved on from. Other than that it’s my favorite car I’ve ever owned!

buying a 1999 limited with rear locker in the spring. Only has 47,000 miles on it and is spotless. My Toyota mechanic owns it. He has had it in storage for the past 7 years.
Bought a 99 srt V6 rear wheel drive in 03 with 36k, now in 2019 has 201k. No plastic trim, but has running boards, roof rack and is a tan color. Fantastic truck! Great video! Wow, you know your 4runners!!
I have a 2002 and just hit 165000 miles still running strong no major repaires despite a couple minor collisions. I love this thing I would never sell although I would like to upgrade rear axle to the 2002 limited e locker version with disc brakes.
I bought an '00 4Runner in this very same silver color last year, found it with only 127K miles, paid $5K and no rust whatsoever.. It's a 2WD model, but I love it. It's rugged, capable and awesome. I do all maintenance and services on it. Great SUV with imo the best engine Toyota ever made, the super dependable 3.4L V6.

I don’t really agree that there is some special Goldilocks status for the 3rd gen... as my current truck is my favorite ever! Miss the 8 cylinder the 4th gen had though.
I have had my 'Holy Grail' 2000 since new, still impressed what a great looking vehicle it is. Here in Florida though it seems the Tacomas are valued more.
I own a 96 limited 4runner and I love it. Did a rear axle swap with a locked rear end. 2 inch OME lift with 5100 bilsteins all around. All pro rock sliders. 265s Duratracs. It is a great overland vehicle and fun in the snow. For serious offroading it has its limitations with the IFS as it doesnt have any flex. If you are looking for serious crawling go with a landcruiser or a jeep
BEST YEAR FOR THE 3RD GENERATION 4 RUNNER WAS 1999 LIMITED. IT HAD EVERY FEATURE TOYOTA OFFERED INCLUDING A TOYOTA STEREO WITH TOP OF THE LINE PANASONIC SPEAKERS AND THE LOCKING REAR DIFFERENTIAL.
Best. Toyota. Ever. I had a 2nd Gen and a 3rd Gen 4Runner. Both manual. Without question the best, most reliable, most rock-solid vehicles I have ever owned. It pained me to part with both of them, and in the case of the 3rd Gen 4Runner, the manual is what did it in. After blowing the rear diff, there was simply no way to find replacement parts at a cost that was not prohibitive. Though now I have a Tacoma that I love, the 4Runner set an incredibly high bar for what a vehicle should be. My 2000 4Runner was made in Japan and if I could find another one in good condition I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Buying my coworkers '99 Limited with rear locker and 200k miles for $2,500. I'm hyped. It might be my forever adventure vehicle. I had an '87 for four years, and I loved that thing.

02 4x4 sport edition currently 500k miles. Still runs strong. I absolutely love my 4runner. I'm also a owner of a first gen dodge 4x4 short bed and 71 international pick up 4x4. And I still love driving my 4runner.
My wife and I own the "holy grail" 2000 model with Dif lock. We found it at a used auto dealer for 5,900 and it will stay with us till the end
Needs a stick
@ Same here, a GX is very tempting for the towing capacity. A 3rd gen runner is still in the mix though
@ I'm not a huge fan of the 4th gen 4runners, but maybe I should give them a shot. Oh really? Where is it for sale?

Congrats!

Toyota would be smart to take a lesson from these facts and bring back this unit. Desirability would be there.
They couldn't afford to make a truck this well again.. sad times
@@tylers4665 they still make trucks this good. Just not in the us. Fj crusier... and 70 series land cruiser.
I still have my 1999 4x4 limited with 250k miles.... bought it brand new back in 1999 and its still running like the first day I got it.
I have 20 years with my 4 Runner 2000 and 195 K miles. Never let me down. Excellent SUV
"Timing Belt" ?, thank God my 2000 4cylinder 4Runner has a timing chain.
Are these interference engines ? If the belt goes on my 2001 4runner will my 3.4 6cylinder engine be ruined totally ? New to me at 226,000 miles.. Thx...

Proud owner of a 2000 sr5 with rear lockers! Currently at 218k miles... Was gonna sell it until I watched this video... Now I'm keeping it forever
If I could go back in time I would buy two brand new and It’ll last me my whole life just about.
Parents own a 2000 4Runner . Besides regular oil changes and a timing belt replacement recently. It literally has no problems and runs great at 238k miles
Bought my in 2001. Never bought another car. We well maintained and garage.
About to buy a garage kept 2001 with 49,000 !!! Pumped as hell right now !!!

3rd Gen snobs will agree with me that the TRUE HOLY GRAIL is the Thundercloud Gray 2000 SR5 Sport, 5 speed manual, with rear locker. Great video, thanks for sharing. Love my 2002 SR5
Kurt Agreed! I have an 02 sport SR5 no locker though :(

I have a 2001 Sport with center lockers.
Millennium silver
‘02 SR5 - Sport in Thundercloud,
Dealer took the first 2 miles on the odometer, the rest are mine, I still love that stupid thing like it was the first day
It’s AMAZING how many of these are still on the road compared to explorer and blazers or same era
Because they're all shit today
It simple, it's not only a Toyota but it's a JAPANESE built Toyota. It's not surprising these are tanks when the Land Cruiser comes out of the same factory
still made at the same plant in Japan since the day the first gen 4runner was conceived.
Great video. My 96 sr5 was going strong with 292292 miles until I was t-boned. I’ve test driven 2010-2019, I want my 3rd gen back.
Best vehicle i've ever owned. My 98 was totalled after 367,000 miles. I'm in a 99 now and it's awesome.
Im rocking a 96 limited with almost 250k miles on the clock. It is my daily, i drive it 100 miles a day.
Same here, 96 Limited, people always ask me to buy it, she's so sexy!
I love my 2002 4runner, just got her a new pair of all terrain tires🖤
I wanna buy you a new set of tires... Nike’s 😍
I have a 98' Limited, just clocked 165K and except for a jell-coat problem on the hood with the paint, everything has
been great... I pretty much, love everything about this truck... Thanks, Moses...
Greats trucks. I have also a 98' Limited it does have 173k and I'm planning to keep it until my last day in land.
Toyota!!"
I was once a pro GM guy, buying nothing but GM vehicles (Camaro/Corvette/Trans/Am (Pontiac) RIP :( It took Lexus for me to realize that greatness that is Toyota. Customer oriented, luxury, plenty of revolutionary accolades within the company spanning 40+ years and onward. I know I might be sounding like a fan-boy, but I'll admit.. Toyota is just ahead of the game in the JDM market.
There is a reason that lots of people study the Toyota Production System. Toyota does it best!
@ Too many electronics which caused the cars not to become reliable, too much moving parts and too much plastics ....on today cars.

I recently bought a 2000 Limited with the diff lock, so I guess I found the holy grail. Love it so much.
Congrats. I'll never let mine get away.
@Bob Dylan im not selling it, i love it, sorry.
I have a 99 forest green sr5. Has e locker 4x4. 240000 miles and it runs and drives like new. Best truck I’ve ever owned
I own a 1997 4Runner with only 120,000 miles on it. Love the 3rd gen

Got the “holy grail” 4Runner for my birthday and I haven’t looked back since
Just put a new transmission in my 2001 limited 4Runner at 250K. It’s ready for another 100K. I’m keeping this Thing forever
how much is the transmission including labor?
Arturo Norona Jr. I paid around $2,100 and it’s doing great.
why did it go?
What was wrong with the transmission? It should last just as long as the engine, which implies it will pretty much last forever if taken care of.
My 2000 4runner is the best suv truck i have ever owned....luv it..

My 2000 limited is still going strong at 346k miles 💪 rebuilt transmission at 165k, it's about time to do it again
