Your so right that's exactly what Greg wanted .When he first suggested it Arnold Palmer blew it out of the water . The PGA tour only have themselves to blame golf is huge in Japan and South Korea , did they try to incorporate the Japanese open or the Korea open within the PGA schedule ? NO ! Have the PGA tour tried to grown the game outside America ? NO
The PGA tours mission statement should be to grown the game , that's it in a nutshell GROWN THE GAME !!! How can the PGA tour grow the game if it only holds tournaments in America .

Whether they choose to admit it or not, the PGAT needs to find a way to attract a new generation of audiences . LIV, love it or hate it, is the first to recognize that golf has to evolve to appeal to a modern audience. Moving the sport to digital and interactive feature to keep the new audience immersed in the game and no longer just a visual entertainment.

As a loyal fan of golf for over 27 years I am disgusted with what is occurring! No, the PGA no longer has the top players in the game! Half the players I followed are now in LIV and it’s now only about business and money. Furthermore, the PGA says they want to grow the game worldwide….however, now that I live overseas I cannot watch the PGA tour online, but I have the option to watch golf on TH-cam either live or recorded (as I live in an odd timezone) thanks to LIV Golf. I have become more and more disillusioned by golf and those who lead it!!

What do the fans want? They want to be able to watch LIVE golf as it happens. The issue with a "global" tour is that if you are in the USA, events that occur on the other side of the world are over by the time you wake up in the morning. The difference between thirty years ago and now is social media. No matter how much you try to avoid seeing the winner, it is impossible to not see it before you've had a chance to watch a rerun. Therefore, most people do not watch it once they know who won. Probably one of the reasons F1 is not that popular in the US. LIV Golf is great when they're in the US but otherwise, they are not watched that much. Each geographical area of the world needs its own tour so people can watch in real time.

    • @1362pc

i'm getting the impression that Sir Nick rally hasn't watched much of LIV - apologies if I'm wrong on that.
Ok, so I now watch a lot more golf across multiple tours, because of LiV - which I have become a pretty big fan of - and it is streets ahead of conventional tour golf in terms of viewer experience imo - with a few exceptions - majors etc.
Bottom line, the PGAT as was is toast - nobody on LIV is grovelling to go back, the PGAT simply does not have the players it needs without those from LIV, and so here we are - start of a golf revolution. Sit back and enjoy the ride...

It does appear that golf is going the way of boxing, where you have different champions from different entities....but there appears to be no unification unless you count only the Majors. But then again, I don't think that's going to work because I don't see anyone winning more than 4--5 Majors in their lifetime anymore. Heck, that's been the case since the Jack/Watson/Player era...and then still you had Trevino in there. Had it not been for Tiger, Phil would be the biggest winner of Majors since Jack with six. Yet, Phil never really looked like a dominating player, more like a player that never went away. Now, it's much worse. We might never see the best players together even once a year, as many are not qualifying for Majors to boot....and they don't really care, with $4M for winning some LIV event with music, shorts and three rounds....who knew this would happen?

Greg Norman proposed a World Tour back in 1994 and was shut down by the PGA Tour by Tim Finchem and Norman cast aside. Even back them he recognised a world tour was better for "growing the game" then being soley based in the US. The Saudi's put their money where there mouth is an backed LIV and bought marquee players with wads of cash, furthermore 3 of the 4 majors are based in America, giving the PGA Tour the monopoly back in the day as the place to make some serious money. The PGA business model is now threatened by the Saudi Public Investment Fund and they know they cannot compete financially, hence the possible merger. The whole "sports washing" premise is a smoke screen IMO, yes, the Saudi's have a non exemplary record with regard to human rights but lets face it not many countries do. I love all tours but all I can see at this stage is they are all growing the bank accounts and golf is not readily accessible to the average person given the outrageous cost of golf hardware (over $1000 for one club, seriously). COVID did more for growing the game down under than any tour...

Golf is a world sport, not an American sport. More golfers and golf fans in the rest of the world than in America!
The European Tour of the 80's/90's were more global and on same level than the PGA, but because of the PGA allowed to create a monopoly, all was centralized in America and golf around the world suffered...just looked at how weak the tour in Europe (DP Tour...lol) became.
And the Americans (PGA) don't want to loose their grip on their monopoly...specially with Jay making more money than 98% of the golfers on the Tour he is supposed to look after and lead!
I hope the tours stay separate...it is up to every tour to make their tour more attractive and better to keep golfers and to attract new golfers to their tour...not by using the influence you have to force partners to penalize golfers that chose other tours to play on, cause that way you drive fans away.
And every tour should have their own ranking system...OWGR is obviously a PGA ranking system. And if the Majors only use the fake and irrelevant OWGR to invite golfers and they keep ignoring LIV golfers, they run the risk of fading into just 4 more PGA Elevated Events....

It gives the fans variety. It gives the fans options. Par is par. The pro golfers average 69.3 on par 3. The top guys are on average only a little better. But the top ones who win can get occasional low scores around 62-65. Do it 3 (54 holes liv) or 4 (73 holes pga) rounds in a row is harder and what evens out almost all the golfers.
    It’s our measure of ourselves.
There are lots of ways to enjoy the game. It isn’t all LIV, PGA, DP world tour or any other tour. It’s just fun.
The marketing by manufacturers is what pushes this divide.

  • @markanderson8006
    @markanderson8006 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

No-one likes change. Exactly Pga tour don’t want a world tour they don’t want to make any deal with PIF they have hinted as much Spieth, Woods. This deal with John Henry’s group. Scheffler dominant world number 1 is on pga tour even if Rory joins LIV they will survive. Rory is playing crap at the moment it’ll be a decade since he’s won a major he will fall down the rankings this year might even slip outside the top 10. The PGA tour don’t need the Saudi money and I don’t think any more top players will leave this year. So no deal will be done. No-one watches LIV. I think Rahm joined LIV fully expecting a deal to be done he’s probably already regretting going once his 5 year exception runs out he’ll be back on pga tour same with Koepka.

Trying to 'sex up' Golf with loud music, etc., and attempts to make it easier are doomed to failure.
The reason why Golf has persisted for 400 years or so, is that, it IS difficult and requires self discipline and self evaluation, all the traits, that the people they are trying to attract, DON'T have.
The short attention span, dopamine addicted, modern generation are never going to take to the game in large numbers, no matter what they try to do to appease them.
So, why alter or mess with a game that has been so successful for so many centuries?
Much better off leaving it as is, and the right sort of people will always fall in love with Golf, who cares if it can't compete with the NFL, or the NBA.
I'd rather let it die than have the 16th at the Phoenix Open at every Tournament.

Screen Golf is the future of golf. In Korea the men drive into these SG facilities with their girl friends or #2s and rent a room after work. They play golf in a comfortable private room, some of which have private bathrooms, and party with their gfs. Because of climate change this type of entertainment is going to take off everywhere, especially in the south where summer daytime heat index temps are going to become potentially lethal.

To me this all kicked off when Greg Norman wanted to create a true world tour. From what I understand, he thought it was a bit of a joke, when to be the World number one all you had to do was play and win in the USA. Sure golfers went and played in the British Open and Saint Andrews, but most just stayed in the USA.
If you don't play all over the world then you should be called the USA number one. If you play in Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Japan, Spain and Europe and North and South America, then you would be able to be the number one golfer in the world.
All the current world tours, plus LIV and the PGA should attempt to create a world tour consisting of 32 to 40 events world wide. This is the best result for the game of golf. Use the world rankings to create the feild and play the 72 hole events. Perhaps there should be some 3 day teams events like the Ryder Cup or the Presidents Cup.
LIV and the PGA needs to look at what happened to Indy Car and learn what is the best for the sport.

golf was ruined by the introduction of novelty equipment as professional gear sanctioned for tournament play. those clubs were designed for high handicap golfers and seniors to AID the unskilled players with EASIER to control equipment...
the result is that MISHIT drives now go 300 yards in play, instead of have consequences as has been the case with professional golf since it's inception. this provided UNFAIR advantage to the longest hitters, and the criminal pga acting as pimp for the industry, simply lengthened all the courses so that ONLY the longest hitters could be the most competitive...which is why the game today is measured by meaningless metrics like 'club head speed', something that never mattered to a game where PRECISION was the necessary component rather than speed, and SHOT MAKING the imperative rather than distance.
the net result is that professional 'novelty golf' is now for gorillas who measure their entire games by how far they can hit the drive...having now wedges into every par 4, and mid irons into par 5's, another offense to the traditional game.
all in order to sell expensive novelty gear that was never meant for professional golf!!
    it's offensive, obscene, and absurd.
in addition, the Q school is the biggest joke in professional sports, practically gauranteeing that NO real competition will easily emerge to unsettle their limited hangout sport.
no more ben hogans...no more lee trevinos...no more tom watson or gary player...
i wonder if faldo believes we actually have the 'best golfers in the world' today?
i say we only have NOVELTY golfers today, since the best shot makers have been eliminated from the sport.
proof is the 2020 open where 'bomb and gouge' tactics of modern novelty golf allow a 'champion' who missed the most fairways, but coincidentally mishits drives the furthest!!
modern golf is DEAD because it was changed from the traditional game that rewarded skill to a novelty game that only rewards length that comes from novelty equipment.
i wonder how bryson would fair with a persimmon wood?
the real answer it to SHORTEN and TIGHTEN the courses...let them play olympic club or spyglass at traditional length...then we see who the shot makers are.
they have even ruined most or the courses today...who ever heard of 500 yard par 4 after 500 yard par 4!! who is that 'testing' but the tiny group of modern novelty golfers that the industry has created to sell their overpriced plastic novelty gear?
the leadership of professional golf should all be run out of town, some put in jail!
it's nothing but racketeering and fraud to force undeserved profits.

The real danger is that Saudi money will determine the future of golf, because who ever controls the money will control the game, the tournaments, and ultimately the rules and players, including national bodies. This has already happened in professional boxing, where the crown prince dictates who will fight who,. I for one think that this trend towards "carnival" atmosphere golf also detracts from the heritage and spirit of the game. It lacks class. What's next? Naked dancing ladies on every tee box? For all my detractors who say I'm a "stick in the mud", let me ask you this question. Would you still go to LIV golf even if they didn't pay as much as a normal tour event? If your answer is NO, then you are playing purely for money.

Nippy thinks they should ban golf until 2056 and then start again. If anyone is seen playing golf or practising they should be immediately arrested until April 7th 2056. I think that is very fair. They can have cake to eat whilst in prison but that's it. It's a great game! The best game ever! They should also ban bunkers and make the hole 6 inches in diameter. There shouldn't be any cuts when it comes back and no one should be allowed to fly the ball through the air, only along the ground. There should also be a spaghetti eating competition at the end of each hole. There should be minimum of 46 clubs in your bag. No umbrella to be taken on the course in case it rains. Thank you. I feel that I have imparted some of my wisdom on you all. I won't charge you for it. I think I am being very fair here. Thank you.

The reason why Sir Nick had to play “global golf” is because he HAD TO. He had to travel in order to make as much money as possible playing golf.
Today’s pro golfers don’t have to. Win 1 tournament and you make $4m. In 2023, 139 golfers earned $1m on the PGA Tour and 87 golfers earned $2m.
In 1990, Wayne Levi won 4 times on the PGA tour, finished 2nd on the money list & was named PGA Tour Player of the Year.
    He earned $1m.
Today’s players don’t have to travel around the globe. 😎

Why did the Saudi assassins have to pick our sport to wash their dirty hands? I wonder what Rahm’s motivation is to even hit a fairway after pocketing a cheque like that. Without competition the concept is doomed to fail, and the standard of play will fall. As the PGA Tour’s slogan was “These guys are good”, LIV should go with “These guys are loaded”. History repeats itself: Norman was draped with multi million-dollar sponsors back in the day (Reebok, McD’s etc.) but couldn’t close out a major. If Faldo stood within six feet of him, his heart rate went thru 200.

The US television interest dictates the PGA direction. TV provides the money & sponsorship of players follows the TV ratings and a players appeal & performance.
US PGA need to work through the current TV contract & then make a deal with LIV.
A professional global circuit across all continents is the future for world professional golf.
The remaining 99% of golfers will continue to enjoy their club & social golf and watch the majors on television or attend in person.
The US cannot continue to take the best from every tour around the world & expect there not to be a well funded competitive alternate that LIV has become. I agree with Sir Nick, LIV needs to become a little more serious for it to gain some traditional credibility.
There are plenty of golf content providers on TH-cam and they do a great job at providing golf entertainment. World professional golf needs to be serious or it risks being seen as a novelty & the tubers are doing that content day in day out without the billions in staging costs.
Amalgamate the elite from all the tours, have a professional circuit (tennis can do it, why not golf?) & let TV cover it not dictate golf’s direction.

I went to the LIV Golf event at Valderama last year to see what all the fuss is about. I’ve been to numerous Open championships, also regular tour events. And for the last 10 years attended the Scottish Open. There is no comparison between the two events. The atmosphere at the LIV event was completely flat. Phil Mickleson’s group teed off at the 14th where I decided to watch the 1pm shotgun start. The group around the consisted of about 8 stewards and about a dozen spectators. At Valderama’s iconic 17th It was sparceley populated , which compared to the Spanish Open where it is normal packed with spectators. The LIV players in my estimation are overpaid prema donas. The PGA & DP tours have nothing to worry about.

There are far too many words but in truth there is actually a simple solution, but that solution requires people (and how many things that are sensible are prevented by people?) to reach a decision. The first thing is to recognise that the purpose of LIV golf was only to disrupt and take control. I don't believe that the concept of LIV golf was really seen as the future. What they have done is take some of the best players away in order to get a seat at the table. The PGA is wholly protective and not open to change, or they aren't open to change they are not fully in control of. All sport attracts attention through competition and meritocracy. The majors are sacred so they take 4 weeks a year. I would then have 22 elite world tour events with an eligible field of 120. I would have 22 2nd tier world events (with a further 120 eligible players) for which their are titles but most importantly the top 20 of that order of merit are promoted to the elite division and the bottom 20 are relegated. The supporting tours have a similar structure that allows promotion to the 2nd tier and so forth. The 22 elite tournaments can be iconic PGA and DP tour events e.g. Waste Management, Arnold Palmer, Memorial, BMW PGA tour, Scottish Open, Australian Open. The 2nd tier can be similar events such as European Open, Made in Denmark, British Masters, Byron Nelson (NB: These are suggestions). For the remaining period have 4-6 "team events" in different global locations. I would align with the LPGA and have a World Match play for the top 16 players through a defined qualification from the men's and women's game i.e. the top 16 men playing a straight knock out against each other and the same with the women. Now that is logical, it can be made compelling and it brings the best players together. The scheduling can be made so that there is a "big" tournament somewhere in the world most weeks. There is no reason why that can't happen other than people, who probably earn far more then they should, can't agree. Those peope are the ones who provide the entertainment and excitement i.e. the golfers they are the "suits" who know better than all of us. When they reach a solution that is close to my suggestion, because I think they will (continue as they are and people will choose to watch professional golf less and less) they can give me a consultancy fee 🙂
