      He's also seen to be a contrast to Deacon. While X6 is brutally honest, Deacon is a habitual liar. However, X6 is against helping others whereas Deacon is all in favor of such. Not to mention settlers would protect Deacon had one turned on The Railroad whereas X6 engages in battle with settlers if one were to turn on The Institute.

      He embraces the Sole Survivor as his brother in arms, as someone who shares the same core beliefs as he does. X6 clearly is self-assured and doesn't think himself deficient in any way, so why would he hold back in that moment? I think that he genuinely sees himself not as a servant, but a soldier, and understands the Institute way beyond their propaganda. He bleeds Institute, even if he's not really supposed to.

  • @Bondelhyde
    @Bondelhyde ปีที่แล้ว +48

    I like to think that X6-88 is like Knight Rhys. As Rhys "bleeds Brotherhood", X6 is heavily involved with the Institute, as it being his whole life and all he has ever known. But, in truth, both characters are flawed in that they are blindly worshipping their factions without wanting to embrace any possible changes that can and will happen, and without any perceptions other than what they've been told. In this, they fail to realise that they are not actually furthering the factions' goals, but rather the self-interests pursued by their leaders.
    Elder Maxson makes it known that he "cares for humanity" in his speech on the Prydwen, despite not actually making efforts to help humanity unless it directly benefits him and his chapter, and says that all synths are abominations which must be destroyed, regardless of if they are an Institute agent, or if they are attempting to live their lives as people. He then forces these beliefs onto the rest of his chapter, as said to "obey without question".
    Father claims that he is trying to save humanity and give it a future, using the general guise of the Institute to claim this. However, as noble as he says he is, all he has done is attempt to carry out experiments based on his own selfish curiosity, no matter the cost to human lives or resources, as well as exercise his own sadistic and cruel tendencies. With this, he has arguably also restrained the Institute in its technological prowess and its moral compass, actively refusing to even consider synths as sapient and sentient, as well as denying any research into fields such as cybernetics, and maintaining a view of the Commonwealth being "a lost cause".
    Both leaders use their factions as a front for their own self-interests, and this in turn makes the other members believe that they are all "fighting the good fight", and pushing these ideas to the Commonwealth ignites confusion and anger due to the factions seeming to not care about what atrocities they've committed.
    It may be easy to write off both X6 and Rhys as bad writing on Bethesda's part, but I actually think that the way they are presented is genius. Because they are a testament to propaganda and cult personalities, as well as people who blindly believe what an individual or group says without knowing or understanding the true motives behind their actions. Quelling any individual thought or questions, they represent the leader's vision and ideals of the faction, but not the faction itself.
    It leaves this one final question to be answered: *What are you really fighting for?*

    • @QualityPen
      @QualityPen ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m not sure that’s fair. Father thinks he is doing what is in the Institute’s best interests. I think it’s foolish and there are better ways to resolve the Institute’s internal political divides than to appoint an outsider to lead it, but I don’t think he’s being selfish by making this decision.
      It does look like nepotism, but the player character is uniquely capable and the familial link to Shaun does offer a little more legitimacy than just plucking a random wastelander off the streets.

    • @jackzed2020
      @jackzed2020 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@QualityPen noone doubts the nepotism. He has several capable people at hand.
      He is selfish because there is a council installed and yet he ignores it. Everybody expresses doubts and technically, father has no real proof that you as his dad are capable of leading a whole community. Given your prior actions in the game, jot counting the side quests you might have undertook and just focusing on the main plot line, you have done little more than save some rag tag do-gooders and built some beds in ruins for them, followed orders by postapo fascists and/or cracked the ultra difficult railroad-password "railroad".
      Yes, you can survive. But the same you can tell about Kellogg who did that for decades prior and noone considered him becoming leader. By all the actions done in the game, you only show that you are hard enough to survive out there. Which has nothing to do with leading the institute.

    I've always thought that the Institute labeling the "Gen 3's" as Synths is an excellent example of how effective some very simple propaganda efforts can be. If you took a human, very slightly genetically modified them and put a mind control chip in their head, people would freak out and be outraged. But if you do the same exact thing and label them as just the next step in a long line of advanced robots and then segregate them in some way so that they can't build close relationships with others, many people (even player's who can see the game world with 360 degrees of knowledge) will accept it. It's both fascinating and disturbing how easily this pretty ham-fisted type of tactic can be accepted.

    • @VeraTheTabbynx
      @VeraTheTabbynx ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Even Glory, the one escaped synth in the commonwealth who chose to keep her memories refuses to accept she is truly human because of the simple fact she saw the synth creation process, even though it's using real, lab grown human tissue and making a perfect, 1 to 1 copy of human anatomy with it, essentially just building a slightly altered adult human rather than using the natural process.
      Acadia is the same, the synths there segregate themselves based on this despite being perfectly able to lead normal human lives.
      Propaganda is a powerful, terrifying thing.

    • @quagmoe7879
      @quagmoe7879 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      It’s literally not propaganda. It’s a true and simple fact that they aren’t human. There’s a difference between displaying qualities of personhood and actually being a person. Is an AI that emulates a person a real person? Of course not, Synths are no different. No propaganda is necessary, only cold logical scientific truth.

    • @VeraTheTabbynx

They have thoughts, opinions, and desires, unlike any AI. They are capable of higher level thinking, which outright _requires_ true intelligence, not possible with AI. The synth component is not their brain, it's just a chip that interfaces with the central nervous system.

    • @facio1000
      @facio1000 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@VeraTheTabbynx In my experience, frequently excluded groups eventually take ownership of things that were previously forced upon or used to exclude them. So, for example, the term “quaker” was an insult or slur, but eventually the targeted communities took ownership of the word and normalized it. I find it ironic that in the case of “Gen 3’s”, due to their generally negative experiences with the Institute or Brotherhood or average Commonwealth citizens, it’s not unlikely that they probably will end up becoming a separate community / nation, and perhaps eventually something to be feared due to them embracing an identity of being not human, being hated by humans, and always being in danger from humans.

    • @facio1000
      @facio1000 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@quagmoe7879 But they are human. They are indistinguishable from humans in all ways but the synth component. They are literally made from pre-war human DNA, and then chipped. It’s pretty horrible when you think about it. If you want to argue that they are AI, then you’d have to argue that their mind exists completely on the synth component, but that doesn’t seem to be its function. It seems to be an interface that allows outside control of a human mind. I think, at most, you could argue that the synth component has a sort of control AI that allows outside control of and maintains guardrails on the underlying human mind. Pretty nasty stuff. At most, they are cyborgs, are quite primitive ones.
      If the argument is that the way Gen 3’s are created makes them not human, then that makes me think of how IVF was perceived a few decades ago. When I was a kid, children conceived that way were derisively referred to as “test-tube babies.” It was considered weird, creepy, funny, and slightly disturbing. Times have changed, and now it’s normal. Different is not inhuman, just different. From what I’ve been seeing, some of the stuff that we’re looking at in our real world in the next couple of decades, might make Gen 3’s look pretty mundane…

    X6’s character shines through his conditioning. He is unwaveringly honest, independent, and he judges people by their actions rather than their words. He’s strong-willed, yet subordinate, and he reconciles these two traits by choosing his leader.
    The fact that he can admit Father’s mistake proves that he was chosen to become a Courser for a reason. He isn’t loyal to the Institute, but rather what is stands for. He’s not loyal to Father, but rather to his vision of the future. The skills he’s learned, the capability he’s been granted, sets him free in his own way. He’s aware of his emotions and keeps them in check; that discipline frees him from being controlled by compassion and fear, selfishness and rage, the way those on the surface are.
    Very deep character actually, enhances my understanding of the Institute’s goals. They aren’t as comically evil as previously thought, still evil but now nuanced.

Also I've noticed the juxtaposition between X6 and Nick Valentine, as well as the similarities Paladin Danse has with his loyalty to the BOS, both being raised in these factions, and idolizing the leaders of these factions so much that even when things go wrong or the leadership they look up to do things they're against, they still feel loyal and obligated to obey their leaders

They both believe in something so much that they refuse to see the flaws in what they believe in, and so they blame the flaws on everything else. The thing with him is. I don't think he cares if he's or any other synth is a person. That's irrelevant. Maybe even considering the idea to be dangerous to the institute. To him. Synth or not. You serve father, the betterment of mankind, and most importantly the institute. He has closely linked who he is as a person to the institute. That's part of him. And by not serving it's best interests. You are showing your true colors in his eyes. Your rejecting him and what he believes. A complicated person indeed.

  • @imzesok
    @imzesok 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    It's annoying to see X6 so, so close to realizing the institute CAN be wrong, and often is, and stopping just short of putting 2 and 2 together. Synths are supposed to be unthinking, unfeeling machines, just able to mask it with a fake personality so they can infiltrate if the institute is to be believed. Yet here we are with X6 forming opinions, thinking and feeling for himself, and not even realizing it. If only there were a dialog option you could have with a certain SRB head to let them know X6 has started behaving erratically like the rogue synths before their departure, and receive his reset code. If we're siding with the institute we should have all of the evil options, right? Feels like a terrible, terrible bit of oversight on Bethesda's part.
    Perhaps even have dialog depending on the progress you've made in the Minutemen, that includes an opportunity to change his mind about how he views the world above ground seeing how you've united the settlements under one banner. Perhaps he even becomes conflicted and confides in you the doubts he has about the propaganda the institute fed him during his training. After all, if they were wrong about the doomed nature of the area above ground, what else are they wrong about? Or maybe you fail a speech check, he dismisses the idea, and chalks it up to your ability to lead people despite you literally not leading and being a lacky for all the other factions including the institute, because critical thinking just isn't in the programming.

  • @jjrolly73
    @jjrolly73 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is theree no possible way to get X6 to be mindwiped by the Institute or Railroad? If not that is another missed opportunity.
    Image when X6 refuses to be your companion, so you go to ther scientists and demand his memory to be wiped, forcing him to be a companion again, but this time forgetting everything he's ever done.
    For the Railroad he could believe he is a real human, forgetting his life in the institute entirely. In addition to this, he would still be a companion, but instead working for the Railroad.
    Basically both choices strip X6 off his entire personally, recreating him as a generic synth (maybe creating new quests to rank up in the institute) or a person looking to find who he is (also creating new quests)

  • @AG-ur1lj
    @AG-ur1lj 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I don’t think the last bit entirely holds up.
    1. Presumably a synth would learn human speech from human-speech data. So similar to the LLMs we have now, you would expect it to communicate with phrases like “made excuses in my mind” to describe a process of having multiple layers of judgement processing while being completely oblivious of what it means to have (or be) a mind. i.e. A synth talks about its own thoughts because it is the most intuitive way for a human to follow said synth through the process of verbal communication.
    2. A stutter and a loss for words are not the same thing. By that I mean the neurological processes that result in a stutter are _very well established_ to be completely unrelated to the ability to think of the next word. A stutter is almost closer to a stress tic. Stutterers only struggle when talking person to person. It’s a very specific type of impediment. It’s been demonstrated many times that even people with rather severe stutters are able to talk to pets and animals flawlessly and fluently. All this to say, I don’t think you can equate the two in terms of being “malfunctions.” There is no apparent reason for a robot to stutter. Unless a synth was intentionally designed to have a lisp, then a robot developing one spontaneously could only be called a _malfunction_
    By contrast, consider a robot programmed to describe a concept that is inconceivable to you in a way that you will understand. It’s programmed to do this by posing as a fellow human-a teammate who cooperates and provides aid. Eventually you will exhaust every explanation it is capable of inventing. It can’t get frustrated with you, and is always searching for the best path to clear communication with you. The only option would be to eventually tell you that it cannot think of the right words to further explain. In other words, it’s a completely valid result. Nothing about it points towards malfunction.
    3. Shortest point: X6 also is shown to clearly be capable of accounting for the possibility of “Father being wrong” in its projections for possible futures. He tells you this directly when he confesses to being doubtful of your appointment as Father’s successor. Like a robot, he is simply incapable of acting on them beyond a certain degree. This is consistent with the dialogue options you can choose that would be certain to feed the doubts X6 later confesses to hold. When you insist that you’re nothing like your son and continue to point out ideological differences, eventually X6 will simply end the conversation saying that Father is often right and hopefully everything will still work out.

    X6-88 is a relatively new Gen 3 synth. Since X6-88 is aware of shutdown/recall codes, and equally aware that non-synth people cannot be shut down or recalled and instantly reprogrammed, he must categorize people based on power, like a child does. X6-88 acts exactly like an adult child, living in fear and hatred of things he does not know about, and only respecting people if he is a witness to their actions. He is not interested in harmony and coexistence. He is, and personifies, a weapon of the institute who kills on command, and ceases killing on command. Interestingly, when X6-88 openly defies the Sole Survivor, he must have expected that he would be shut down and reprogrammed, like any malfunctioning synth, but the writers chose not to go that route.
