My Gramps lost 2 wives to cancer. He lived full time for 3 years in a 34 foot Class A. After settling into a campground, he would make a batch of margaritas and sit outside with a sign saying "FREE MARGARITAS " He was never alone for very long. Sure do miss Grandpa Bill !

You are spot on; it’s hard cooking for 1. For pasta I make up a batch of red or white sauce and divide up into zip lock bags and freeze. then I can just cook a few noodles. then I defrost and heat up one bag of sauce in the pasta hot water. put the sauce on top. Of the pasta. Done.

Going RV camping solo is the best way to meditate and get to know yourself and God in a deep and meaningful way. Decoupling from society and all the "noise" is refreshing. Just yesterday with no prior RV knowledge whatsoever Brand New to death I installed a Anderson hitch on our truck which we just bought that came with a gooseneck ball.! I'm a part-time solo camper, even though married. Spouse has no interest in camping, but encourages my trips out. So, when out at campgrounds, I visit when appropriate with my neighbors. I enjoy my own cooking and have a simple campground menu with usually one day leftovers. Eat out occasionally. Have been amazed at the fun exploring the major sites surrounding. Camper is an Aliner Scout Lite and take my Ebike and stay mostly in State Park campgrounds. Thanks for your tackling this topic of soloing.

My father always said, follow your heart, get a interest or hobby, myself in a campervan, fishing, walking or cycling, indoors was ham radio, art and jig saws.
Try to involve yourself with others who have similar interests, be very open mindinded , try new things, and always have someone to talk to openly when you find yourself with on going problems. Be honest with yourself and get out there and enjoy the great opportunities we can all take advantage of.

Hi Paul. I travel with my husband and four dogs. Last January I met a lady who was traveling by herself in her class B and her dog she was staying at our campground but I didn’t meet her until I saw her at the laundromat we had a great time visiting. I met another woman in 2020 who is traveling solo. She had just retired. she had never driven a pick up truck or hauled a camper. When she retired she sold her home in Oregon and bought a large pick up and a 5th wheel. She spent a couple of months learning how to drive the truck and pull the camper. She was traveling the country with plan stops to visit friends and family. What caused us to have a very long conversation at the campground was we had both purchased Grand Design campers. We talked so long that my husband got concerned and came looking for me. Lol! I hope you have fun in your travels and I will keep watching from afar!

    Paul,
Love your “down-to-earth” style of your channel.
I’m a solo camper but am still working full time, so when I go camping, it’s usually boon-docking in either of 2 National Forests near my home.
I prefer the solitude of disbursed camping with my Doberman in my Lance truck camper, mounted on a 4 wheel drive F350 Dually.
The Lance is fully self-contained, so I can’t really say I’m “roughing it”.
Also, Jumping on the Skyline Drive near my home and taking it to the Blue Ridge Parkway the full length from Virginia into North Carolina while staying at National Forest Campgrounds along the way never gets old to me either!
Between riding motorcycles, camping, and now exploring with my dog in a recently acquired Jeep Wrangler, in addition to working,
I found the “trick” to not feeling lonely is to keep busy doing stuff-
Plus, others join in on motorcycle rides, and (I’m hoping), Jeep exploring..
It takes awhile to “get comfortable” going it alone, after being in a marriage or a relationship, but it’s not all that bad I’ve found,
especially once you have friends sharing the same interests..
I once shared the dream of retiring full time into an RV with my ex, but as life changed, I’m m not too sure I’d want to give up my detached garage/workshop but instead, use the house as a home base.
Plus, as you said in the video, while on the road, all the responsibility is solely on you, and not knowing anyone along the way would/could play on a person after awhile..
    Anyway, just my thoughts..

Paul, as far as the cooking goes, you might think about cooking in batches and portioning the meals out in single serve containers. It's easier than trying to do small individual servings for every meal. Make a 4-serving recipe, for example, and package and freeze the three meals remaining for another time. So easy to do with soups, stews, casseroles and you can just pop them in the microwave to reheat. As far as things like steak go, you can cut that steak in half, cook half and freeze half. You have a nice-sized freezer in that rig---great for storing make-ahead meals.
Enjoying your videos and hope you are finding peace!

@@paulontheroad I have alway noticed that traveling in the winter there is not as many people out and about in real cold areas. I do agree Paul that campgrounds are mostly filled with friendly people. When people are out I will go up and ask how they like their rig and that will tell me if they want to talk or not. Most will tell you all about it and many will want to show you their rig. Now during Covid most did not want to so you the inside. To me it is a great way to start a conversation.

OCNY We are retired part time RVers and this is pretty much what we do when we travel. Hubs is the cook and he makes meatloaf, salmon patties, pulled pork, etc. and puts meal servings for the two of us in freezer bags at home ahead of the trip. We are usually gone 2 weeks and we take the main entrees from the freezer with us, microwave them at mealtime and add canned or steamable bag sides. We occasionally will eat a meal out or have the usual hot dogs, burgers or steaks on the grill, but this is how we do most of our camping meals. Would work well for full timers as well. That way you don’t have to eat the same meals for several days until it’s gone. Most everything you cook can be frozen and reheated.

Paul, you should buy a vacuum sealer, vacuum seal individual portions of spaghetti or other dishes, and freeze. To warm, if thawed, you just drop in water that is boiling but turned off. Easy peasy and pretty tasty. My son bbq’d me two chickens, vacuum sealed individual pieces which I warmed in the water bath. They tasted pretty close to freshly bbq’d. Just don’t boil them!! And don’t microwave…water bath in sealed plastic only.

I would hate to click off your videos due to non- rving topics. You give great insight and useful info that helps many of us. Thanks again, keep up the fun stuff!

I’m 66 and I started solo Rv 2 years ago. I Love it. I only wish I was younger so I could do it longer ! I’m not full time so I fill my social needs at home but when I get on the road it’s such a free excitement! Just get out on the open road and enjoy !

Hi Paul, I am a solo camper- At first, it would freak me out and all kinds of negative thoughts occupied my head. After my 4th camping trip, I started getting used to being solo and look forward to peace and quiet. I still struggle with cooking for one person 🤣. I do like you do and have left overs time and time again. Sending much love.

I love camping and rving. Fortunately I have a partner to share the experience with. We generally stat in state park or rv parks. Either way it is imposdible not to engage with your fellow campers. Dry camped only once outside of Jerome, New Mexico in a very rustic state park on top of a mountain (Potato Patch State Park). A beautiful place to stay but challenging to get to. Even there it was impossible not to engage with the other campers. Rvers/campers are a special breed of people. We seem to be more friendly and helpful than regular sticks and bricks neighbors. I am not the most friendly by I do appreciate my fellow campers. It is almost impossible to be lonely in an RV park . Sometimes I do like solitude. My partner is much more gregarious than I am so meeting new people is pretty constant. How lucky we are to enjoy this wonderful lifestyle. We’re on the road for about six months of the year. Still have a house to maintain and family that wants us around. Good video, Paul.

I have no qualms about being a solo RVer, Even at the age of 78, but I know nothing about mechanics and my only fear is something breaking and I will be stuck on somewhere on the road. I always enjoy your videos Paul and pray the best for you

Just a tip from another single fella. I almost always make enough for dinner that I have lunch the next day. Also, you don't have to make the entire bag/box of pasta. Just cook enough for a serving or two. The hardest part for me is keeping busy, now that I'm single. I will say being single is a great way to save money for getting an RV. ;)

It just occurred to me that I have a friend who solo RVs. She stops in at Senior Center - often at their meal times when public is invited - to chat it up with the locals. She's also habitually in local libraries and museums, meeting interesting people. Some, she has kept in touch with over the years.

Are you considering down-sizing your travel living space, like to a large van? I don't remember you talking about this, but it might just be my brain, and I apologize if you've already discussed it. When I lived in North Carolina (where I'm from), I used to do solo back-country tent camping, and car camping at the beach, and I loved it. A few months ago, I found out that, here in Germany, I live 2 hours away from the best theme and water park in Europe, EuropaPark, and there are loads of places that I could overnight within 15 minutes of the front door. It's become a real impetus for me to think more about having a "sleeping car" or a camping van option.
And thanks for reminding us about your incredible "Mr. Fixit" background! I'd like to hear more, about what kinds of good stories and bad stories you've had, living your life.

Good points Paul I too am single and find the same challenges and just recently purchased a new Park Model Home in a 55+ RV Park. I find a few to chat with, some you don't want to chat with and there is those couple(s) that choose to remain inside and are not outgoing for what ever reasons. So I respect them for their choice. Enjoy your easy feeling videos. Thanks

I really don’t miss the socializing. I been by myself for a long time. I got my little dog. Great video. Thanks for keeping it real. I like hearing live updates or whatever you want to talk about.

Glad to hear from you Paul and thanks for sharing how to live alone on the road. You might want to share how you keep your good physical health. I know you ebike and that is what you and I have in common. Personally, I have a goal to purchase a truck camper rv, non slide, and travel the country Winter 2023 when I am fully retired at 66 1/2. Lance 850, Cirrus 820, CapriCamper Retreat. are some I am interested in. I am confident I can do rv repairs but not truck repairs. I wish you a Merry Christmas Paul! Best regards

Your comment brought back the feelings I was experiencing back in the winter of 2018 when I was planning my journey, a lot of joy at the thought of places I would go mixed with the fear of the unknown. My advice, for what it's worth is not to worry about the things that haven't happened yet.
As for staying fit, it's been a lifelong obsession of mine and right now I use my e-bike and some basic calisthenics to get the job done. I also try to eat healthy but far too often fail on that front.

Hi Paul! My mom is solo in her sticks and bricks and cooking for solo is hard for her too. We take her some meals but when I am gone to work she fends for herself. I have picked up some frozen meals for her, mostly stouffers, and they have some pretty good meals in smaller portions. There were 8 kids growing up so cooking for one is hard for her too.

Hey Paul - I like hearing about solo rving, but I'd also like to know more about your work as a field engineer - any anecdotes would be great. Solo RVing sucks. I miss my navigator, scheduler, tour guide, stopping at rest stops for potty breaks, parking assistant, fixing meals, stocking the trailer with supplies, helping to make the bed, someone to share something of interest, and I could go on and on and fill the page. But, there is a Pro, and that is you can turn the radio up really loud and sing along even when you don't know all the words.

In my B-Van the biggest challenge I have solo is surprisingly navigating. As long as the GPS is keeping up things are fine, but without that second set of eyes to look at the map and help read signs once you get a bit crossed up it can be a bit of a job to un-pick yourself.

    • @paulontheroad
      @paulontheroad  ปีที่แล้ว +3

One of my biggest fears is getting into a situation where I find myself at a dead end with no place to turn the rig around. Thank you for mentioning that Alex 👍
