    I had a rude wakening this week, I've been under the weather for the past month and my truck AGM went flat, in fact down to 3 volts. My so called smart charger thought it was a 6V battery. I had to find my old charger and run that for a few hours to get it to 8V before the smart charger would get smart. Good video, thanks.

    Glad you got it figured out, Paul! With the amount of current that those disconnect switches handle, I decided to go with quality disconnects from Blue Sea Systems for my LiFePO4 battery system. I had those exact Amazon disconnects with my old single lead acid setup but I just didn’t feel comfortable pumping 200+ amps through them, even when they were rated for it on their paper.

    Good video Paul, very methodical approach to the issue. I'd make sure and followup on why that switch melted, just to be safe. I'm sure you already know but make sure any component between your battery bank and inverter is rated for the maximum short duration current draw. I like to add an additional 25% just as a safety factor. Stay safe and happy travels.

      Thanks, Mike! Yes, I've been monitoring it daily with a voltage drop test and so far have not seen any rise. My belief is that the switch was the problem. Excessive clearance > High resistance > ultimately ending with a melted switch.

    Hi Paul, The switch is the results of what failed. Try hooking up the DVM in series with the Positive line so you can read the current. I think you had a current spike which could have fried the switch. Watch the meter under a max load and see if there is too much current for the switch. Use a safety margin of 20%. Best of luck.

    After buying a lot of those harbor freight voltmeters, I would get them again. The leads on them are really thin, and often break. Get a $20 voltmeter from Amazon or Lowe's or anywhere else. Get one that had a buzz for continuity, and possibly backlit.

      Thank you, Andrew. You're right about the small wire gauge on that cheap HF multimeter.
      But I used to give those away to the techs when I would visit a dealership for some easily diagnosed electrical problem. Often I would find the Fluke in their toolbox to be inoperable for various reasons and I would leave one of the $6 DVOMs with them and tell them, 'until you get yours fixed or replaced, use this'.

    I saw that lithium setup and was completely surprised, because you don't see failure of that degree with lithium batteries. The switch should never have failed in that fashion. The amount of energy going through it should never have been that high. Thanks for the video, fascinating, I have seen a bunch of this kind of set up and it is very interesting.

    You might want to look at the Blue Sea switches rated for several hundred amps DC if you have the problem again. Thanks for the info. Did you install your own solar (I should probably go back to your older videos to find out ;)?

    • @paulontheroad
      @paulontheroad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the recommendation Mark. The switch I have is supposedly rated for 275 amps but obviously it can't carry anywhere near that and I will definitely be checking out Blue Sea!
      And yes I did the solar install and I can't remember if we ever did a video about it on the other channel.

      @@paulontheroad the switch I use is rated at 350amps continuous, 2000amps for 10 seconds and 1000amps for 1 minute. It is very beefy. Amazon sells them (Blue Sea Systems Battery switch On/Off AFD, with 3/8” lugs, ip66 water rating - it is $38.17 right now with Prime). I installed my system as well. Those LiFePO4 batteries can supply several hundred amps through that switch to your inverter. If your inverter is on and acts as a backup power source or boost power source to your plug in power, running a coffee maker or a brief power loss outside of the camper would energize the inverter and potentially pull full power for a brief amount of time. That would likely be more than 275amps if you have a 3K inverter, thus causing injury to your prior switch. The Blue Sea switch (and a good T-fuse) can handle this with ease.

    • @paulontheroad
      @paulontheroad  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The switch is rated for 275 Amps and there's no way the inverter could be passing more than 80 Amps, (probably less) so I'm looking for an alternative switch. Thank you, Corey 👍

    How could the batteries actually get down to ZERO volts? Oh, Lithium, and the disconnect switch. Shouldn’t there be a fuse somewhere in there?

      Lithiums will drain to 0 and there's a 150a fuse right next to the disconnect switch. Thanks, John

    The voltage drop method only works if current is passing through the device (switch in this case). Higher current results in higher voltage drop. If there is little or no current flow, then there will be little or no voltage drop.
    Measuring resistance is a better test for a degraded switch. Remember - NEVER connect a meter set to measure resistance (ohms) in a live circuit. The meter sources a DC voltage when the resistance function is selected. You will not get a proper resistance reading and you may damage your meter if connected to a live circuit. So, disconnect the switch from the circuit, measure the voltage to verify there is no power at the switch, then measure the resistance. While measuring the resistance, cycle the switch from on to off a few times. The restance for switch OFF should be "OL". The resistance for switch "ON" should be very low, much less than 1 ohm. EDIT - if the "ON" resistance changes, especially if it goes down, after a few cycles of the switch, then the switch should be replaced.
    OBTW - I (Dave) have used the voltage drop method as part of my job (calibration lab technician).
    Hope this helps.

    • @paulontheroad
      @paulontheroad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Dave. Yes I explained that the circuit needs to be under load for the test to be valid. I also talked about only using the Ohm test with the switch disconnected but then proceeded to do it with the switch in the circuit, albeit unloaded. Thanks for the critique, I really appreciate it. 👍
