Paul, it works well because it's melting the plastic. If you keep doing this in the long term, you need to buy new headlights. There are several kits on the market, but for a quick cheap option, use a microfibre cloth and kitten car polish. It requires some elbow crease, but it works, however the sun will break down the plastic again quite quickly if you are in a sunny environment, so once the lights have been repaired or polished they need to be sprayed with a UV sealer to stop it fading again.
Paul is living his best life. Interacting and sharing info that is new to him. Feedback like this is awesome because we all learn “there’s always a better way to skin a cat”. Thx Paul & @yes-today!

I would use this method to get rid of the fog and then hit it with a ceramic coat. Best of both worlds by eliminating the buffing portion from the ceramic coat kit.
Lifetime warranty is fantastic, whenever you need a clear lens, it's done, can you take it to any Firestone ? I would imagine you can, also that would be for both sides and is this in writing, guess I will check out the website.
Paul that's totally awesome. I bought the kit to clean my lamps but like you said a lot of buffing. Going to buy me some OFF!!! Awesome video. Stay Army Strong!
Interesting Never knew that was a solution to make things brighter. Curious and have to ask. Those rigs towed behind a RV do they install any windshield protection to avoid rocks or debris from damaging the windshield? Reason I ask I haul boats around and use at all times even behind the boat travel cover. Boat windshields are expensive and many times hard to find to replace a broken one. Enjoy AZ
Hi Dave, most motorhomes have full width stone guards behind the rear wheels. Some people even stretch a nylon cover over the tow bar for extra protection
@@paulontheroad I have a complete brush type on rear of 2500 truck that does a good job. But most windshield mishaps we have encountered or visited about is from on coming traffic throwing rocks as they meet. Which I guess can’t be helped. Really enjoy the little traveling companion Boo? Glad for ya. Still doing my weekly smoothies you showed me how on a YT last year.
Interesting tip. I do wonder what long term effects this method has to the plastic. In a pinch it seems like a decent option. I think you'd definitely want to put a UV coating over them.
Great tip Paul. Going to try this on our volunteer ambulance corps squad, ford expedition. The headlights are fogged over with only 33k miles on it. I was ready to buy something from the auto parts store. I’ve got some Off at home. 👍
@@REL3712 If you’re resigned to replacing the headlight assemblies then I’m having a tough time understanding why you wouldn’t try something that clearly (no pun intended) works. You do you, I’ll do me.
I tried it on my 2010 Corolla that has had foggy lamps for 10 years. I used the pump style of Off with 25% DEET. It worked fantastic. I agree that if I end up having to get new headlamp assemblies, it is worth it. In the meantime, my headlights will be more visible to others and I will be able to see the road much more clearly.
I respectfully disagree. It’s full of chemicals that aren’t natural for our bodies. And you wonder why cancer is so rampant? We are bombarded with these kinds of chemicals, this is just one of thousands and I guarantee they don’t know what it does to us nor do they care.
Thanks Paul. My car headlights are starting to do this. Question does the air temperature need to be a certain temperature? Were in winter here in east Tennessee. God bless.
I'd highly recommend doing some further research before trying it. ChrisFix has a good video about it and doesn't recommend for various reasons including short term results and damage to paint and rubber seals.
Off bug spray contains DEET (diethyltoluamide), which in small quantities can repel insects. It is also a harsh chemical that will disintegrate certain materials such as the poly-carbonates or plastics used to fabricate most headlights.
@@paulontheroad I wouldn't consider destroying the lenses as working. Careful Paul, you could be opening yourself up for legal action. Lenses are not cheap to replace.
@@teresasprouse1097 yes. So when DEET comes in contact with materials like plastic, rubber, latex, vinyl, spandex, elastic, rayon and auto paint, it interacts with the chemical bonds within those substances. Prolonged or excessive exposure to DEET, and such materials can start to break down, leaving prized gear corroded and even damaged.
DEET is a solvent. It actually dissolves the surface of the plastic. On your rig, you probably removed the UV coating that was put on at the factory. On the Caddy, check it out in a week, see if it’s still clear.
The reality is that there are a number of methods by which one can temporarily remove some of the oxidation, providing some short-term improvement in the looks. However, unless at least some sort of UV protection is restored, the lenses will just fog up again…typically even sooner & over a larger portion of the lenses, as this is likely to destroy what remains of the depleted UV protection on the surface of the lenses.
I am by no means a chemist, but I tend to agree with the gentleman stating that the off is melting the plastic I’m going to try this on a lens I don’t care about, but I have three or four polishing kits from different manufacturers that are very time-consuming and really don’t work very well Happy new year to you and boo. Does it work on backup camera lens’s? When my camper was in storage a couple years ago the camera faced west and was beat up by UVrays for about six months and got really foggy and I couldn’t see very well in my monitor. I bought a kit at auto parts store and really worked on it and foggyness did go away but it was a lot of work on that little lens. Now I cover the camera when in storage but never know when I have to do it again.
