Hey Michael! I have a fresh built 250r with brand new HPI ignition. I am only running a pro design tether kill switch. Does that go right into that "kill switch wire" coming off the cdi? Or do I splice that into the orange wire coming into the coil?
I have a 1975 KX250. Original ignition has gone out twice. I just purchased an HPI for it and going to install it tonight. Thank you for the video it will be a huge help when installing .

I just installed my HPI on my 250r. I must say it was very impressive. I've had my 88 for 20 years. I can't remember it ever pulling so hard and the response in throttle... 2 thumbs up!!
@@wrldtrvlr4117 I followed led performance video on his site. I can't remember for sure but seems it was before top dead center. Im really happy with hp 68 ignition. I don't ride at night so that's not an issue for me
Hello Willy. Can you double check if its 100% well mounted? Because after he set 2mm btdc he cut the video and then lock the nut, and then on double check the piston was 0mm tdc and rotor placed on secound mark. After he moves it 2mm before, the ignition logo on rotor its outside the ruler with ignition marks

dude im glad you got the hpi working right . because like LED said factory is 35 years old at the end of the day . but for me if i can find somebody selling a factory ignition that is in good condition id collect it . i race xc and once we got the motor tuned in it always cranks on the 1st kick . if it dont then i dont have my kill switch in lmao

If you want a lighter pull on your clutch lever, straighten out that Z bend on your lower clutch lever, attached to the clutch cable (seen at 10:20). You'll have to grind a little off the cylinder for clearance of the lever and tweak the cable mount a little, but the reduction in clutch pull is noticeable and well worth the mod.
Looks good. I'm in the process of swapping a 250r motor into a 2000 400ex frame that I have modified. It's super fun to do stuff like these projects. Can't wait to see what's next.

I got a hpi red box on my “Honda” hm50 and iT works great i have now 14hp with a fast 50cc kit from Polini and a custome Made exhaust, ... before the red box i had a black box hpi i was verre happy from iT so thats why i baught the red box iT gives around 1/2 hp more power and iT tork is slightly better. Got me an 86 trx250r Sunday and it's breaking up really bad through the whole Powerband. I'm figuring the cdi box is bad because I've ohmed out the rest of the components and have concluded that an hei ignition is what I need!
Top notch quality built literally amazing quality in work,idea,scheme,motor build,overall one of the nicest 250r builds.in my opinion i think the quad only needs a hand coned inframe exhaust to make it have that true final detail and also I think raw 2 stroke pipes are a piece of art,if your ever interested let me know I’ll hook you up with my fabricator he’s a legend in the game

Hey mike you might want to check but we always lightened our flywheel for mx. And run oem for xc racing. Some guys weight there flywheels for xc. More roating mass slower rev, less stall. Lighter flywheel faster rev. On a mx track you want faster rev to get the power down for the jumps. That's why mx dirtbikes have such small flywheels.

@@MichaelSabo probably good for drag racing without the weight. My wife's uncle works for vitos hes the parts guy he says banshee draggers use a pvl ignition theres literally no weight at all. Banshees got alot of rotating mass. I'm sure you've noticed the trx250r revs alot faster than a stick banshee.

It's no surprise that the installation instructions were misleading. When someone knows everything there is to know about a system, they may unconsciously assume that the reader understands what they are saying.
@12:44 you mention that (the orange wire plugs into the only tab on the coil) is from the stator, Is the hpi ignition different from traditional cdi type ignitions as to where the "primary" coil wire comes from the cdi unit and the stator feeds it along with the rectifier "regulator" if equipped. great vid!

A question for you. would you say with the lower mass flywheel than stock, the motor revs a bit quicker or easier? Also, is there less vibration? I figure even with the added weight, the hpi unit is lighter than oem. I just ordered an hpi unit for my bike that has a big ol' OEM flywheel. hoping to get a quicker revving bike and hoping this smaller diameter flywheel will reduce some of the vibration.
So looks like it’s been a year. Are you still running the hpi and how does it perform when actually riding? I just purchased this for my bike so I’m very curious.
I usually do 3 - 15 minute heat cycles and occasionally vary the throttle RPM and then right lightly at first. There is so much controversy over this I'm sure you know.
Hey man I've been watching your videos about the hpi. I just got the kit for my 86 cr250 installed tonight and I realised the rotor and stator are hitting each other when rotating. Assuming u have removed the hpi rotor what did you use to remove it? Hopefully I can sort this out myself and get it running right.
Hopefully you still monitor this video. You set 2mm BEFORE TDC. Was that a step specific to the TRX250R or does that apply to all Two Strokes ie CR125? BTW, great vid!
I would imagine yes; these are somewhat universal and HPI makes a ton of different models. LED Performance may actually know the exact one and be able to get it for you.
Great video on this install. You set your timing at 2mm BTDC. Is that what your motor calls for? Once you ran this a while did you need to advance it or retard it at all? I’m using this same type of HPI on my Yamaha TD2 motor. It calls for 1.8mm BTDC. I just wanted to know that you set yours up to what your manual says. Thanks again. Great job!! Thom

Yo yo throw a electron carb on there they say they are ready to go out of box no jetting issue I’m not sure there worth the money as I never tried one only herd rumors and they say in the 2 stroke world it’s the best I’m so tempted to do my banshee but I don’t want to take the risk haha take it for me ! Here in spain these kind of ignitions are most installed in 50cc mopeds that are so famous and people use to get them to 70 to 110cc with ignitions like these but here we have mvt, selettra, bk, italkit and these brands. Nice vid tho
So I have the same ignition but it’s for a ktm250 sx 2mm stroker. The instructions are the same and looks identical. I am getting severe kickback but I only set mine to the second hash mark from zero so I think I’m really advanced after watching this video. I’m going to try setting where you did. Interesting to think that 20 years of electonics evolution wouldn't make a superior ignition. We have 2 machines here, 1 cr250 the other stock, same LED 300 and the cr250 definitely starts easier. They will both be at silverlake.. Also have an hpi to go on the stock R ignition machine after the trip.
I will see you there man; I am certain that a superior ignition can be made today; there are just no companies making them for the 250r at this point; again, I could be wrong. This HPI seems to be better than my OEM though. LED has actual dyno feedback; if you call them they have really good info/experience and actually share it which is awesome.

Yes; the CR250 ignition is actually considered an upgrade.
