Excellent video!! I have been fighting our storm door for years. I've tried shimming it dozens of times and once I saw you make those 2 pencil marks I thought...hey let me try that. Holy crap was my striker way off. I cut out a good 1/4 inch and now for the first time basically since our addition was installed the door latches perfectly.
Same. We have one particular cat who is a brute. And when he wants to go outside (I don’t like him to go out) he literally body slams the door and it comes open.
I love your videos! Fixed my storm door that hasn’t closed right for a year after watching your video. My husband asked me how I did it and I told him that I just consulted with my fix it guy!
I began to suspect that the latch wasn’t lining up but I couldn’t figure how to see what was happening. I can’t wait until tomorrow morning to try this. 😊👏
I tired this on the door we have and thought it would work for sure because it was so misaligned but it wasn’t fixed after this step alone. After this, I put cardboard shims behind the metal receiver and it worked like a charm. So satisfied.
This simple repair saved me a lot of money. I was about ready to replace the latch, etc. It took me all of 6 minutes to fix this! Thanks for making a useful and clear video!
Thank you so, so much for sharing this info! Our door was off by almost an 1/8 of an inch for some reason after being perfect for like two years. Our strike plate only had two screws, so I just lowered it accordingly and saved us a repair cost. Thank you so much again for your generosity in sharing your knowledge and help! Immediately subscribed to your channel. :)
Thanks much. I fiddled around with trying to get the latch to catch for a long spell and watched your fix, and 5 minutes later I was done. Great repair fix!
For mine the door handle is alittle loose and for some reason because it's lose the latch isn't closing all the way I have to lift the handle up alittle but if I let go it goes back down
Thank you very much for this video! I had to replace the storm door knob and could not figure out why it was wasn't hitting the striker plate and locking in. Your video explained in 2 minutes what I couldn't figure out for 20 minutes. The new striker plate for the new knob assembly from Anderson didn't line up properly, so as you suggested I marked and trimmed it instead of raising the striker up. I even called Andersen for help and since they couldn't help me, they are going to send a new replacement knob assembly. I wonder if it will be the same striker plate? LOL Thank you again!
My new storm handle/lock closes tight, but when I turn the lock to lock the door, it's not going deep enough into the door frame to lock. How do I fix this? Thanks.
Thank you for this video! My toddler fell through our front screen door one day.. no biggie, we’ll fix it soon.. here we are 6 months later and the wind keeps opening my door & activating my Ring doorbell. 😂
I wish I could send u pictures and videos because I have a question but idk the name of the part of the storm door, but it’s the part that is behind the latch hole u removed.
I have to lift my door slightly to get it to latch. You can see on the frame where it has rubbed. Is there a way to adjust it slightly so it is straight?
I just noticed that my Anderson retractable storm door was installed without a striker plate by Home Depot, a few years back. Now my door is flying open... Can I purchase a striker plate?
I'll bet you have a broken spring. Does the, latch part move but doesn't spring back? Take an ink pin spring, you may need to cut it to size, install it, spring, behind the latch.

Thank you! What type of file did you use?
I used a fine tooth metal file. Thanks for watching.
Thank you

My new storm handle/lock closes tight, but when I turn the lock to lock the door, it's not going deep enough into the door frame to lock. How do I fix this? Thanks.
How does it get that way to begin with
Jim,
What causes a misalignment like this?
Thanks!
It worked. Thank you!

Does this happen because the doors settles?. I had no trouble for 10 years.
Had this problem for several weeks. Thanks to your video and a few minutes work with a file, problem solved !!
Glad it helped
Sometimes you can just tighten the screws holding in the hinges.
Thank you sooooo much. This helped me out a great deal
Glad it helped!
What if the frame doesn't have a striker? I have an anderson door and it just has a groove for the door latch to catch but it isnt catching.
Can you send me a picture.
Adjust the outside frame, closer to the, door, fill the old holes, with a wooden Match stick. Basically the door is probably out of square
Thank you! Big help:)
You're welcome!
My handle set on my new storm door is loose. Do you have any tips for this?
There must be a screw somewhere you can tighten .If you send me a picture I will take a look at it.
@@getitdonehomerepair Great. Best contact email?
can a strike plate go on a storm door
No it is smaller than the one on the storm door.

Yes in any big box store.
My handles are loose. The center slides back and forth. Solution?
Send me a video of the problem
@@getitdonehomerepair We figured it out, thanks!
You should've lowered the hinges opposite to the latching holes on the upper corner assuming you have andersen storm doors.
Thanks for watching.
How can I get a storm door lock unstuck? Its locked and wont unlock.
You will need to open the lock to see what broke.
I have a screen door just like this one. When I twist the lock it doesn’t lock it just keeps turning. How do I fix that?

what about if its not the latch? what about if the bottom of the storm door stays a bit open?
Can you send me a picture of the problem?

Great video, but not the kind of latch I'm having trouble with.
Thanks for watching.
I have the exact same door and the top screw is stripped ! Exasperated !
Good video? How do you fix a storm door that locks and doesn't open?
I'll bet you have a broken spring. Does the, latch part move but doesn't spring back? Take an ink pin spring, you may need to cut it to size, install it, spring, behind the latch.
@@markchristensen5206 I got it fixed. I had to adjust the tension at the bottom of the door. Thanks~
My door latches but only if it slams really hard if it closes softer it won't latch
You can adjust the sticker on the door frame
I just woke up around 6 minutes ago
Glad to help
I cracked my screen protector
