Badass. My 14yo son and I are gonna do a desk for his room. I’ll be home in 2 weeks for 2weeks so we will get after it then. I’ll be researching while at work this 2 weeks. Stoked. Thanks for all the pointers and inspiration.
That turned out great ... I'm a big fan of this treatment - especially when you use a wire brush to scrape off the charred wood, you can get an amazing contrast in the grain.
You'll get far less bowing on your tables if you alternate the grain pattern of the wood. If all of the boards are facing the same way thats the way it'll bow. Smiles and frowns for the win!
After seeing Cam's video and yours, I think my office desk replacement project is going to go in that direction. I didn't want to drop a ton of money on an expensive slab of wood, so this just might be the ticket.
At 6:53 you said that it reduces the ability for pest resistance, weather resistance, fire resistance, and UV resistance :-) Thank you for the information. I will start my son's desk next weekend and will use this technique.
Great to hear and would love to see the finished product. Please share on insta if you can :) thanks so much for watching and good luck with your project.
@@BYOTools I have all the materials now. I am just waiting for the weekend to start working on it. I don't really use any media like Instagram, facebook, or TH-cam. I am way behind on technology, but I will see if my son can share photos/videos.
This was really cool. You might think about doing some helium hits once in awhile or SF6 because your voice and cadence is too relaxing, but I'm glad I came across this video. Good on you for giving props to Blacktail.
This is Awesome! One quick question tho…. If you were to use coloring, say red, in the epoxy would you lose contrast with the char, or just get a red glow?
Super cool! For Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板), it is acutely a burnt Cedar Board used at ancient Japanese architecture, but not the technique to burn wooden material itself.
I know this is a bit of a late down the road question, but is this table fire resistant? Would it tolerate a hot pot off the stove with no issue? trying to do something like this with a wooden serving platter so I can also wood burn before applying the epoxy to make a really cool finished product.
Thanks so much Miguel and nice catch on the driveway, but it is actually the same exact sealer I put on 3 years ago. Haven't done anything to it other then pressure wash it once a year. Glad it is still lookin good.
My second coat if like this size I use a plastic come squeegee that leaves 2 mm gaps between everything and few mm thick I made mine from car wrap tool then cut teeth into it That way you get perfect level and amount then get clean paint brushe soft one and dap over it everywhere to break the lines this way it will dry like glass
"the thought process behind this technique is actually been official since the longevity of wood" ...you crack me up bro haha love the editing and videos but I have to make fun of you a bit tho cuz ur askin for it, cheers
Truly appreciate the support Vincent and yes I did get it fully converted. Check out this video to see was I installed at the end: th-cam.com/video/E0FNBUXfr30/w-d-xo.html
How much epoxy per square foot did you wind up using for each coat (primer and flood)? I admit that I prefer a less burnt look, a light burning can really bring out the grain; but I can appreciate the full on torch.
Wow you did a great job!!!!! The burnt look on the wood turned out awesome!!!! I just have one question. I see you used the Dewalt variable speed sander on your table surface. I bought one about a month or so ago. I was gonna sand my entire house with it due to there being very thick coats of paint on it! I would like to know if you have any tips for handling the sander, as I had a lot of trouble handling it.
Great to hear Patrick and thanks so much for watching. As for the sander I love this one and yes it is a powerful one so it can get unweeldy haha. I just make sure I always have two hands on the sander and apply firm even pressure. Obviously vertical surfaces are probably a bit harder to deal with so let me know if you are annoying any specific issues. Does it just start wobbling on you?
BYOT I have another question. I was considering buying the Bosch 5” dual speed orbital sander. Is that easier to handle by any chance? I heard it is perfect for heavy coatings removal.
In Japan the process is usually called 焼き杉 (yakisugi) meaning more or less "baked" or "charred" cedar. "Ban" just means "board". It's not quite this simple and involves brushing/sanding the loose ash and various techniques to get specific colors and textures. What you're doing is just burning the wood. Looks really cool under epoxy but it's not really Japanese.
Yake Sugi is the correct name. Calling it Shou Sugi ban is an insult to the craft. I had the privilege of watching these guys throwing sand down and rubbing it with a roll of leather to remove the chars, using a hash up of Chinese is an insult to this Japanese craft.
Great comment BBB and Martha. Sometimes I'm working through a project and need to make sure I'm protecting myself and encouraging others to do the same. I'll make sure this is accounted for in the near future :) Thanks so much for watching and hope you enjoyed the video.
I thought it might be worth noting that i looked up some hazards on linked in and it turns out there are quite a few. It apperently also weakens the structural integrety of the deck over time through a very interest process while burning the wood. I would advise anyone to look into this first before building a deck.
You sound like a flamboyant Mr. Belvedere. But I like the fact you showed the bow in the table and fixed it. I'm sure that camera doesn't do the mettalic the justice it deserves. Nice job

That's an incredible looking finish, the metallic finish is so beautiful!

After watching Cam’s vid I was curious whether I could do this without using a form. Looks like you pulled it off. Nice work.
No need for a form if you don’t want it. Just make sure you wipe off all of your drips on the edge. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed.
Beautiful build! Love the charred look and the amazing shine!
Right?! Thanks so much for watching and your continued support TB!
wow....if you did say this was your first one, I would have thought it was your 10th! Nicely done!!
Love hearing that Richie. Thanks so much for watching and your support.
That is a very unique look. Hope you win the Rockler Challenge
That’s so much Di! Fingers crossed and looking forward to seeing what happens.
Great video work at 9:30, really illustrates the cupping cancellation well.
Love the finish mate , amazing project !!
It turned out to be a beautiful, authentic desk, congratulations. Healthy days, health in your hands Byot.🙂👌👍🙌
Greatly appreciate the kind words Volkan and thanks so much for watching. Great to hear you like it.
🙂Meanwhile, the burnt color and epoxy turned out gorgeous.👌
I couldn’t agree more Volkan. Thanks so much for watching.
It look amazing! Really good job
Great to hear Idalia and thanks so much for watching. Greatly appreciate the support.

Awesome video. Love Shou Sugi Ban
Need this! Great video
Thanks so much for watching TD. Greatly appreciate the support.
Looks mad I’ll give u a thumbs up here 👍🏽
Haha! Thanks bud!
Looks good I'm doing my own wood work projects and adding epoxy to them makes a giant difference
It looks great man!
Thanks Johnny and always appreciate the support!
Looks amazing!
Great to hear PF and thank you for the continued support.
Its Beautiful...
Those same 10 2x4s are now $140. I can't wait for lumber prices to come back down to earth!
Looks great! I had a hard time showing the final look in my video as well. It's such an unusual look.

Nice job. Watching from South Africa. Nice mix of Miriam Makeba.
Great video! I’ve been thinking about getting this but I thought it is way to pricey. I’m taking your advice and I’m going to buy a roll of KT tape.
Came out so good! How many gallons of epoxy did you use for the whole table?
Looks great
This was really cool. You might think about doing some helium hits once in awhile or SF6 because your voice and cadence is too relaxing, but I'm glad I came across this video. Good on you for giving props to Blacktail.
Nice Vid. Do you think this is also possible with a beech plate that is only 2,6cm thick?
It looks so good. Did you sand when done or just left it alone?

What about adding some color highlights before sealing it..maybe a few areas of blue unicorn spit?

what was the name of the usb connection and the wireless charger?
Golden rule never cross your hose
Came here from SeeJaneDrill. This desk looks great. Did you get around to converting it to sit/stand?

@@BYOTools Nice. Thank you for the quick reply.
Did you sand and buff it?
No sanding and buffing needed with the epoxy. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video.

your voice is so soothing but the table looks really nice
Halcyon: Hal-see-uhn
How did you get it to where it wasn't any dust that was stuck on the top of the table?
Are you worried about just general home dust of the ash from the table? Thanks for watching Samuel.
@@BYOTools just the general dust, what's the highest sand grit paper you use and do you use any stinger for the wood and epoxy
I’m not expert but doing this with your bare hands seems very dangerous! 1:20
I agree. I would want to have something to push the lumber with.

Didn’t you polish it?
It’s called Yagisuki
Fast forward to May 2021... those prices have changed slightly 🙁
That is the sad scary truth Sherry. Thank goodness I took on this project when I did ha ha!
👍🏻
most clear finish epoxy needs hours of sanding at different grits... not this one?
nice vid but I don't get why 'they' say this Liquid will be self leveling.... aren't all liquids self leveling ????
👍
PUSH STICK
Sometimes I live too close to the edge haha! Safety first! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video cool J.
Beautiful men
Titebond three is waterproof titebond two isn’t. I use three for everything
It's actually not Japanese!
It was first done by the Jurchen/Manchu people
10 2x4 for $40!! goof times. now that would be around $100
1:30 Dude,if you gonna make instructional videos, use a stick for safety... Some yohooo gonna do what you do and get a discount fingers.

Sorry, you did not pronounce it correctly.
You said "shoogy", while it's more like "soogy".
