    Beautiful technique and finished job! As a photographer the only change I would have done was not letting glass touch the print as over time it could sweat and cause water marks. Even if the glass is warm and each time a door is opened in the Winter.

      Thanks, it has a nice spot in my shop and I do enjoy it quite a bit! I agree with you though but unsure if the excitement would be shared among my family... maybe if I put the family portrait in it...

    Those ebony plugs could have been made into drawbore mortises. Great work as always tomy.

    • @HovingtonInstruments
      @HovingtonInstruments  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. But I didn’t see the point since I was using soft wood. Drawbore works great on hard wood, but I’m sceptical of this them on soft wood like fir. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it

    • @rimmersbryggeri
      @rimmersbryggeri 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      :) Fir or spruce can be quite hard though depending on growth conditions. I have never done any mortising myself and the examples of drawbore mortises I have seen have been on oak I think so I dont doubt your choice. I think they will use it in spruce and pine though in timber framing for splicing joists. However for construction here in sweden it would almost exclusively be spruce.

    • @bobwitt305
      @bobwitt305 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greene and greene, or the hall brothers who built the stuff, didn't actually draw bore anything. A lot of plugs on the originals actually cover screws that were used to pin the m&t joint.

    Wonerful and this burning effect is amazing. I didn't get how you generate those channels on the surface of the wood ? Was it with the broom I don't think so

    • @HovingtonInstruments
      @HovingtonInstruments  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jipes Blues the softer part of the wood gets burnt and turns to a removable state while the growth ring remains. The broom removes the burnt material quickly... Thanks for watching!

    Hey man I know this is an older video but was wondering if the wood warped at all? When I try burning the wood always moves a good bit.

    • @HovingtonInstruments
      @HovingtonInstruments  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it didn’t move when burning and/ or overtime.
      Maybe the woods you have tried with were too wet still...🤷‍♂️

    Very Nice and something different than a square frame! (you just forgot to put some acid-free tape in there before putting in the glass and photo, as well as the back) but that's the purist in me speaking as a former Framemaker with a Dutch education (*_*)

    • @HovingtonInstruments
      @HovingtonInstruments  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! love this...always something to learn, what is the purpose of the tape? is it to prevent a reaction between the wood frame and the picture?

    • @NotJustSawdust
      @NotJustSawdust 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it to prevent the photo (or any other paper) from "yellowing". That's why frame makers use an acid-free back to. It won't show very quickly but if you frame something that you want to pass on, it's an option to think about. I still have some tools from my old shop in The Netherlands and did get some questions about them while using them in a few of my video's. So I've got a video planned about them (will get to the materials also)

    • @HovingtonInstruments

    • @HovingtonInstruments
      @HovingtonInstruments  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The picture of the trailer and crew was taken in the company yard. I assume they didn’t want all the rubbish in the background so they photoshopped mountains in the background. We’re in British Columbia so they are readily available;) thanks for your feedback and for watching!
