I've known commercial jet pilots who think of their job like its driving a bus or a truck ...... and go gliding on their days off to remind them of the thrill of flight.
I used to be a trainee paragliding instructor a lifetime ago. Met a lot of commercial airline pilots who wanted to learn to paraglide who told me how boring their job was. They all liked their jobs, just thought they were boring.

@@gaygemortashed7192 Maybe it was intended as such, it likely wasn’t. Most of my power pilot friends and colleagues of 48 years are blissfully ignorant of the challenges in flying sailplanes.
I learned it on an airfield that had lots of farms around. But the thing was, at times the soil was pretty wet. We learned to use tiny and weak thermals in the morning, there was no choice. Advantage is, when average glider pilots come down (no thermals), our club members could struggle and stay in the air. Sounds weird, but it really is true, you can learn how to fly smarter, when you got that experience. Sure, on great days you skip these tiny thermals. But can you take advantage of them? Sure?
Yes! Flying a Sedberg together, or a Duo Discus, or a Ka-2 (no, not the ASK-21, the 2-seater looking like a Ka-6) or anything else, when there's no wind a zero m/s thermal keeps you flying for a quarter of an hour at 250m low, and THEN it grows stronger. That's the way the aces do it.
@@paine1985 Heard stories of a World Championship in Texas. One full circle took them 3,000 feet up. No need to slow down in thermals. They flew average speeds causing Europeans to turn gray overnight. I guess NZ is just as wild.
Gliding is the most accomplished form of flight, requiring the greatest science of the element in which it operates. Glider pilots are sky-readers and in competitions the density of decisions to be made is greater than that of a fighter pilot. One every 20 seconds on average ... gliding brings more to my job as an airline pilot than the other way round, as a friend of mine said. And then there is the magic of flying close to a snowy ridge at 4000m in the Alps or above the clouds in a wave flight...
I remember as a kid telling my parents. " I can't wait to drive!" then my mother stating "You won't be saying that when your alway the one driving." To this day I always drive. I still love it just as much as I always wanted to as a kid. "Creating a different outlook every time promotes adventure."
Gliding is always boring when you're not doing it. Like everything else - life is boring unless you live. Even picking your nose is boring if you don't find anything.
Gliding is one of the most under appreciated experiences in the world. I think this speaks to the terrible condition of society today. So many people want want want, they cannot just pause and enjoy the beauty of the world.

This is why I soar. It's nothing but fun. Well most of the time. For me: tasks, XC, and OLC is only a small piece of why I do this. The rest is for the fun of doing hammerheads at any given time, ripping across the airfield at 120kts, circling back around and landing, and sharing it all with my friends and family.
I fell asleep while flying a glider once. I got towed to 2500 feet. I ended up at the hill and got to 3500 feet. Went out looking for thermals and topped out around 7000. All AGL. It was a warm day.
