  • Georg Philipp Telemann
Georg Philipp Telemann (24 March [O.S. 14 March] 1681 - 25 June 1767) (German pronunciation: [ˈteːləman]) was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family's wishes. After studying in Magdeburg, Zellerfeld, and Hildesheim, Telemann entered the University of Leipzig to study law, but eventually settled on a career in music. He held important positions in Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach, and Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of that city's five main churches. While Telemann's career prospered, his personal life was always troubled: his first wife died less than two years after their marriage, and his second wife had extramarital affairs and accumulated a large gambling debt before leaving him.
Telemann is one of the most prolific composers in history (at least in terms of surviving oeuvre) and was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leading German composers of the time-he was compared favorably both to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made Telemann the godfather and namesake of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, and to George Frideric Handel, whom Telemann also knew personally. As part of his duties, he wrote a considerable amount of music for educating organists under his direction. This includes 48 chorale preludes and 20 small fugues (modal fugues) to accompany his chorale harmonizations for 500 hymns. His music incorporates French, Italian, and German national styles, and he was at times even influenced by Polish popular music. He remained at the forefront of all new musical tendencies, and his music stands as an important link between the late Baroque and early Classical styles. The Telemann Museum in Hamburg is dedicated to him.

This is truly great. No wonder; Georg Philipp Telemann is universally regarded as one of the giant composers of the Baroque era. His Magnificat is perhaps one of his best known works.

TELEMANN's 'MAGNIFICAT' reflects the authentic religious theme of GOD, GLORY, HEAVEN & SERENITY. The chorus and solos dictate the spiritual prose in pristine and grandiose voices. A monumental composition reflecting the true spirit of baroque music: blessing, cheerfulness and pax. "Magnificat" is a majestic work of poetic sensitivity that elevates the mind to a place where GOD is... Exquisitely joyful!

Indeed Telemann is more modern, lively and versatile than Bach. They say Telemann is a "Vielschreiber", but the quality and beauty
of his enormous output is unsurpassed I Think.

This is a true masterpiece. Just astonishing!! Extraordinary composition. This is the best version I've heard. There are many poor efforts on utube for this one. None of them come anywhere near what sounds like Vivladi intended it to sound.

Bella versión. Aún tengo el LP en el que aparecen ambos Magnificat de Telemann. Las cantates Agnes Giebel y, sobre todo, Ira Malaniuk son esplédidas.

I didn’t know that Telemann even composed a Magnificat until now, and I was a Music Major in College! But is work is truly amazing! Telemann was basically “glossed over” in my Music History classes in favor of Bach. But there’s obviously something to be said of a composer who beat out Bach for Kapellmeister!

The performance is allright but not ideal. Especially the alto and soprano soloïsts are of the primadonna-type, out of tune and a continuous shaky vibrato.

Telemann is truly beautiful, but let's not forget the Louis XIV and the French Baroque. Also other composers of this era: Philidor, Handel, Purcell, come to think of it, this era was one of the most prolific God - glorifying epochs of musical creation. That being said, I do believe God inspired these wonderful composers, and their musical legacies have stood the true test of time, and we are privileged to hear them today through the medium of vinyl and the compact disc. Gott sei dank!

Bach was definitively the last Baroque composer. The "end" of the Baroque musical period is set to 1750 after his death. He was, indeed, the greatest Baroque composer, together, perhaps, with Telemann and Handel.
