  • Claudio Giovanni Antonio Monteverdi (Italian pronunciation: [ˈklaudjo monteˈverdi]; 15 May 1567 (baptized) -- 29 November 1643) was an Italian composer, gambist, and singer.
    Monteverdi's work, often regarded as revolutionary, marked the transition from the Renaissance style of music to that of the Baroque period. He developed two individual styles of composition -- the heritage of Renaissance polyphony and the new basso continuo technique of the Baroque. Monteverdi wrote one of the earliest operas, L'Orfeo, an innovative work that is still regularly performed. He was recognized as an innovative composer and enjoyed considerable fame in his lifetime.

    this is simply amazing. Imagine telling this man in the 1600's that one day on a platform called youtube, 400 years later people would be listening on computers through headphones. Amazing, what an honor to be human. What an honor to be alive during such an opportune time to relish in the history of arts, of all kinds.

    From the first moment I heard this celestial music, I was convinced it was the most important and profound music I would ever hear. 40 years later I do not think otherwise. Written by the composer to the Virgin Mary after his wife of many years died, written by a composer covered in boils and pustules, written by a man who knew suffering and hoped for redemption. Utterly amazing. Utterly dazzingly. Utterly unexpected and beyond most anything another human being could conceive of (except Shakespeare's King Lear, almost an exact contemporaneous composition)

    • @hermesnoelthefourthway
      @hermesnoelthefourthway 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great comment. "beyond what any other human being could conceive". I like how you bring together the supernatural achievements of king lear with Monteverdi 's Magnificat. I'd add into that the last three operas of Richard Wagner. Especially Parsifal. Best wishes, Noel

      @emilianoturazzi I know, and I don't believe it's Biblical to require celibacy and singleness for shepherds, or 'priests'. 1 Timothy 3:2 says a bishop must be the husband of one wife. In the NT there is not even the implication that celibate clergy are superior to married clergy, anywhere; not one single verse that can support it.

    The music is beautiful. I wonder why all the paintings are of the annunciation instead of the magnificat (during the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth.

    La musica di Monteverdi meriterebbe (forse?) qualche commentatore nostrano, ovvero italiano, in più rispetto alla lunga lista di commenti non italiani: ma tant'è! Sarebbe, comunque, interessante leggere sullo schermo del computer qualche notizia in più sugli esecutori!

      hai ragione, mi esprimerò: il magnificat II a 4 voci mi strugge come nessun brano di claudio, questo che sto ascoltando, invece, non mi sconquassa l'animo come il primo. mi piace, ovviamente, ma nulla in confronto.

    j'aime bien Monteverdi
    avec lui la voix est à l'honneur
    les phrases bien choisies et variées.
    c'est pas d'aujourd'hui,mais c'est toujours d'actualité !!!

      @JACOB H Bossa Nova is beautiful. Getz/Gilberto is one of my favourite albums. It transports me from the soggry grey landmass in the North Atlantic that is the UK to a world of tropical sunshine and rainforests.

    Monteverdi, my go to composer for the transition from renaissance to Baroque. I find his harmonic language to be sparse but so spot on. As a choral singer, I could spend the rest of my life delving into just his madrigals!!!

    Magnificent music indeed ! Just a thing (without low intentions) : there are only representations of the Annunciation throughout the video ; however, the Magnificat comes from the Visitation (the Angelus and the Ave come from the Annunciation). There are plenty of magnificent (!) paintings for it, too ! Thanks anyway, V.
