I like the sinky first gybe... the “perfect”examples in the how- to videos only teach me so much- i need to learn to do those too!! Like, first, get the board around! Then make it work somehow... i got the 170l OK but the 125l has been tricky. Gotta hit that clew first moment
The best advice I got was to buy a speed needle, I started cheap with an old Bic needle for 60 British pounds and used a speed salon sail 5.4 in force 6 to 7. And take it from me you will go fast amd get used to going fast. That's the first step getting comfortable around 35 knots and above. You will find your stance and control at that speed first thing is learning to be relaxed and in control and to turn. After a full year of sailing in the older board needle, I went smaller and thinner which from a normal board would be a shock. I was quite lucky because I learnt to windsurf in the 90s when pots and only 60-90 volume amd were thin anyway. Most boards were ' sinkers ' as if you stopped or went below a few knots you sank. Which is what you have to do. Learning about needles and water starting with your feet already in the straps is something I learnt that helped with such wind and board that gets up to speed so fast and has little room to get your feet in the straps even when water starts. Makes life so much easier. The first time you point downwind with a needle force of 6-8 you will be hooked. What are the best ones I ever did I felt totally out of control because I was going too fast. This is why I say start with a cheap board because it's not for everyone and you will be out of control in such wind and set up a lot.
Great shots Ben, congrats for the speed, must say for somebody whose cherry on the cake is wavesailing you do a pretty good job on slalom gear nonetheless ! 😉🤙🏻💙
How to go faster? A cm more downhaul - ohh and more wind - epic!!! Some vicious bullet gusts coming through on that course. Hats off for >40kn in those conditions. Can wait to see the F2 speed board in action. That is my generation of boards. :) A mate used to have the Alpha Speed Needle. Had some fun sessions on that but it was way before affordable GPS speed watches.
Extremely good run one of the best I've seen on film I think you're GPS maybe reading slow there but 40knots is verry fast ,any idea on metres per second, great stuff, perry
Nice one Ben. Good to see you're having a good time 😊. We're hoping to move to PT later this year. Surprised you're still in a winter wetsuit. I'd be grateful for your thoughts on year round attire for when we make the move. Cheers, Chris
Awesome Ben congrats. Now that you have the support awesome mic... Could you tell us what's going on like how your going faster the theory of it all. Like you did with the bit about more downhaul.👍
Well done Ben! I’ll go to Sagres on friday for the national championship, unfortunatly I can’t go earlier, but my ideia is to stay a few more days after to do some Speed runs with you. I take a 59 and a 53cm wide boards 😉 See you soon 😀
Ben, congrats on your PB on this spot! You state that for more speed, one must add downhaul. But to what extend? In his 2019 video 'Sail Tuning: GO FASTER WITH MORE CONTROL', Nico Prien tells us that too much downhaul makes a board fly and makes a sail more unstable (the pressure point varies). In your video your board looks very controlled and not flying at all. So, how much downhaul in your opinion?
Yep.. less downhaul keeps the nose down. It’s a very tricky subject… as there is no blanket rule and mist of the too guys go off feel! Which is why no one can really find a video that helps… I think maybe the video that needs to be made is ‘what feel you should be looking for.. and how to go about learning it’ But like I say it’s a tricky subject. Basically more downhaul let’s the board fly.. but as you can imagine if you are going very off the wind.. like in the this video or in luderitz it’s harder for the board to fly too much. In slalom.. and more wind sailing it’s a little different as you need more control to keep the board down as the wind lifts from the side and gets under the board.
Hey Ben, Were you using a waist harness? And how long are your did you set your harness lines? I'm guessing you're about 177 cm tall? Same as me-and I always like to find out what other people are using etc. Great video! I was at that same beach a few years ago and the guy who rents equipment lent me his new Isonic and a Point 7 sail. That place is made for speed runs! Regards, Greg
Hello Ben, i have bought a simmer SCR 7.8 2014. You as a simmer Legend do you have Trimmung Tips for me? Is it absolutely necessary to Use a c100 simmer Mast or can i Use also alternative products with lower Carbon rate? I have the Problem with non-rotating 2th + 3th Chambers. I will decrease the battens tension a Little Bit. Do you have any trim Tips for a big SCR Sail? Thx
