I’ve never had any luck taper crimping cast bullets.
I have had good success in.45 Auto Rim seating 200 grain SWC’s deep over a light charge of Titewad and rolling over the top of the front driving band.

@@NWAAdventures The Lee and 2023 Hodgdon manuals show a 3.6 grain start charge. I’ve been using 3.4-3.6. Titewad pressures up fast, so definitely keep velocity under 850 fps.

They don't make 45 Colt Government brass anymore but starline does make 45 Cowboy Special brass that works with the standard 45 Colt cylinder. No need to muck about with auto-loader style taper crimps. 😇

I talked to starline. They have no intention on making 45 Cowboy special brass for a long time. One of my TH-cam buddies made me 50 rounds of it though. Those videos will be out in a week or two. Thanks for watching.

@@jesseboutdoors Cool. Does Schofield brass work well in your SAs? I have often wondered if one made up their own government brass by trimming the Colt brass to Schofield length whether that would feed in lever action rifles.

@@mkshffr4936 never tried Schofield. No one local to me has brass and I’ve never looked for any online.

@mkshffr4936 Starline makes 45 Schoffield brass and is available on their website, but you have to buy it in a minimum of 500 pieces. You can, indeed, make a similar case from 45 Colt. Just look up the SAAMI spec for proper length to cut to. My Henry 45 Colt lever gun will handle it with a lead-forward bullet such as a Keith-type.

I went back to confirm that you did try to push the bullet in manually but crimp held and you explained why you didn't want to crimp too tight. could you have seated the bullet to the very top of the driving band and roll crimp over the top or would the coating still get shaved off as the case mouth expanded?

This was a test. I tight the crimp I did was good but it wasn’t. It’s just me trying something with these bullets. I’ve never done them before so I’m learning. Thanks for watching.
