  • Amazingly, there doesn't seem to be much on this subject in other videos. So let's go ahead and load some common round nose 45 ACP bullets in the 45 Colt for revolver shooting. With the popularity of recreational and steel shooting with the 45 Colt, round nose bullets deserve consideration....

.45 Colt originally used LRN bullets. I've had great luck using .45 ACP LRN as well as 230gr FMJ (with taper crimp) in .45 Colt and Schofield. Great video!

I subscribed to your channel quite a while back but I haven't had much of a chance to actually take the time and listen to some of the videos. However I would say I can totally relate to what you're talking about when you're saying this causes so much joy and I think it's awesome that reloading brings you Joy and you're so positive about it instead of a lot of people that I've talked to in my local area are tedious about it. Anyways hope you have an awesome day and a lot of fun with those 45 Colt rounds.

    Bravo! Loved this video today!
This is like watching me load the in the same style with my old vintage gear. An old Lyman Spar-T press. Old Lyman AA dies, and an Ideal No.5 powder measure. All I've been using since around 1962. You're just alot more modern.😀
And I'm equally impressed that you're using 45ACP bullets in the 45 Colt. Here, with my antique loading gear, I'll load the Ideal 452374 RN, and Ideal 452460 SWC. Two months ago I got a Lee mould for the TL 230gr truncated bullet to try. Never used tumble lube stuff before. But they work great in the 45 Colt, crimped in the top lube groove as you did. Again, it was like watching myself, but with modern equipment. It truly is a small world.
Yes sir, I always enjoy watching you work! Take care, and never stop showing folks your methods to provide themselves with quality loading with numerous alternative choices.

      @anangryranger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@robaldridge6505 Yes sir, I'm finding that out recently with my 45 Colt SAA's I have. I'm not too sure about it through my Henry Big Boy's 20" barrel though. They're lubed with Lee Liquid Alox only. I'm afraid that TL bullet will run out of lube far too quickly as compared to a 4 3/4" or 5 1/2" revolver.
Three days ago, I bought a Great Western II Alchemista IV, in 45 Colt (like I don't have enough 45 Colt Single Action Army's already). That low wide hammer, recessed wide trigger, and 4 3/4" octagon barrel and checkered Colt 1860 Army grips makes for a great combination.
After I cleaned the surface rust from the bore and chambers (yeah, the previous owner shot BP and didn't clean it right) I went out to my range and shot some TL452-230-TC's over a moderate load of Trail Boss. It was starting to cloverleaf, centered at 15m then I started wobbling. I'm in my 70's now so I don't have as steady a hand as when younger.
But that bullet is designed pretty well, and the accuracy is there. My first experience with TL bullets.

@@robaldridge6505 Thank you for the advice! I'm an old school caster that started in 1960 with my great uncle's teaching using mutton tallow and beeswax, loading BP in the 45 Colt. Today, cartridges are loaded with smokeless of course, and I use 50/50 Alox and beeswax. Never used the liquid Alox until now. I suppose double coated would be appropriate for my rifle?

I’m using Lee 255 grain RF cast bullets.I found that 9.0 grains patterned the best at 50 yards. And old model Vaquero will be joining the lineup soon. Oh, I’m going to try loading 230 grain FMJ acp bullets next.

As always another GREAT video... I've fiddled around with ALL of Lees bullets in 45 Colt, I still use the 300 grainer in a +P load as my 'bear load' ( but I can't shoot more than 6 at once now) 230TL cone bullet is my FAV plinker in the Colt, the 160RF shoots the same as my .451RB load but its longer and has a bullet out front for easier loading thru the gate...

Solidity is important in our powder measures. I tested the consistency in charge weight from an RCBS Lil Dandy measure. Handheld charging a loading block of cases versus solid mounting to a bench and charging one at a time. Solid mounting was easily more consistent. I mounted a Uniflow, Redding 10X and my Lil Dandy on a pine round (think Lazy Susan), covered the bottom with felt and I place a 25 lb bag of shot in the middle. It gives very good consistency with all 3 measures and I can slide it around and rotate it on my desk wherever I want. Thanks for the vid, Cookie!

.45 ACP bullets should be .451" diameter. .45 Long Colt should be .454" diameter. A linotype (or Lyman #2 Alloy cast bullet) will be too hard to upset and properly fill the grooves of a .45 LC, and accuracy will suffer and lead to excessive fouling of the barrel and cylinders. Both Lee (NLA) and Lyman made cast bullet molds for .458" (as cast, before lubing and sizing) in round nose 230-255 grain styles. I used the ancient Lee mold for my Ruger "Old Army" black powder revolver in pure lead.

Great video just last night I loaded some 45 colt with some 230 RNFMJ that don’t have a crimp groove and used the Lee collet crimp die they say it doesn’t need a crimp groove. As for those super short Hornady brass you could always cut it down to the Starline 45 colt cowboy brass I understand it’s shorter sort of like a 45 special brass. Also the Hornady 45-70 brass is also super short so I avoid it when buying used brass but still got a lot of it so I’m going to use Quickload to try some loads or just throw it in the brass recycle can.

Surfinblues - Absolutely keep that 45/70 brass - even brass casings that have little neck cracks can still be used by saving up and batch trimming to shorter rounds. One of my favorite range and recreation rounds for the 45/70 is my own 45/55 Dabo (case shortened to 1.800" ) that is a mighty handy, efficient and pleasant shooting little beastie. I cast the flat nose in pure lead. Why? Well, I bought a Taylor and Company 45ACP cylinder for a 1847 Colt Walker. You see, some while back I was at a thrift store and they had a bag of over 500 used 45ACP brass for $10. I bought it cleaned them and given the cost of components decided that 45ACP with this cheap brass was the best option hence the cylinder. Anyway, I loaded about 100 with BLACK POWDER compressed with the flat nosed like yours. It works well. Also I have shot 45ACP in my 1917 S&W with full moon clips.

My “short list” of options are, in alphabetical order: Cimarron (Pietta) 1873 clone, Colt SAA, Ruger Blackhawk convertible, Ruger flat top convertible from Lipsey’s.

45-70 and other 45 rifles generally use .458 diameter cast bullets. 45 handguns like 45 Colt and 45 auto generally require .451 diameter. For cast bullets in 45-70 I’ve found 400 or 405g flat nose shoot best for me. Lee makes a mold for plain base, and I gave a mold (RCBS IIRC) for a gas check version.
