I was a lonely, stolen abused little child, completely unwanted. I had such a hard time growing up. But Magnum PI.. sure I had a crush and it was a dad crush but it was a real one, not a sick one. I wanted Tom Selleck for my Dad.. xo
It's a great gesture, breaking the 4th wall so much. Obviously a choice of the writers/directors/Selleck. It can have two simultaneous affects---that the viewer is being treated like he's really there and a character in the scene, or that Selleck/Magnum is breaking character just a bit to let the viewer in on the fun, that this is all truly pretend. My late mother-in-law was a big fan of the show and I must've seen most of the episodes at her place when I was dating her daughter. The show would grow on a person and it was apparent that everyone in the show was having a blast making it which made it enjoyable to watch.
I got a chance to meet Tom Selleck and John Hillerman in the early 80's on location which was actually right next door to "Robins Nest" and they were filming the "Foiled Again" episode. John H was nice and Tom was pretty quiet but nice. Was a fun day to see how they film Magnum PI
This brought back so many memories and good times of this show. I have the complete series, and to watch this and from time to time pop in a season of Magnum, just is a complete joy. Good times, good characters, great actors, and to see the expressions on Selleck's face at the end and during episodes is priceless. Good vibes always, Aloha and Mahalo.
With the reboot not as entertaining (sorry, Jay Hernandez), and how the world is today, especially the COVID19 happening all over the world and the riots going on, this brings me back to a more funnier and more appealing time of television... seeing the real and original Thomas Sullivan Magnum, the one and only Tom Selleck, doing his trademark grin and eye brow popping, brings joy and tears to my eyes... thank you and Mahalo, Mr. Selleck for the character you portrayed as Human as one of us. If only we can go back to that time... if only...

The thing besides God and the comfort of family and friends getting us through this time is great classic television and movies that get our minds off all the world's craziness. I've been watching the hell out of Magnum on Hallmark mysteries and movies and I wish I could live in that imperfect but amazing time with Magnum, TC, Rick and Higgins.
kendall rivers Agreed 100%... the 80’s weren’t perfect, but compare it to how nowadays is, I’d go back to that time in a heartbeat. Re: the reboot. I’d say it is just different. I like that the show maintains the core values of the original magnum, but they try to directly copy it. Jay Hernandez is a different Thomas Sullivan Magnum, and is good in his own right. I enjoy the new show, but I still watch the original also.

All of these clips are so endearing, but the third segment was from the final compilation as the show ended.... still gives me shivers and so glad I've known these characters.
I read on Magnum Mania that this was the first TV show in which the main actor broke the fourth wall and didn't say anything; just a look, expressionless, sometimes shocked, bemused or smirking. It had been done quite a bit by George Burns in "Burns and Allen" but he always talked to the audience. Jack Benny sometimes threw it in for a split second as he was reacting to another actor's line and would look away and then glance at the camera as he looked back. The other interesting tie-in was the fact that Magnum would narrate the show with voice-overs.
@@Boondoggle6969 It wasn't exactly the same. Mr. Roper always delivered a stinging line and would then turn and face the live audience and laugh. He didn't look directly into the camera the way Selleck did and give a variety of facial expressions.

It's one of the few shows I bought the whole collection of.
