    What a truly special experience! There is nothing quite like being able to look at a work without a crowd, case, or protective glass getting in the way. I worked at the MFA for many years and the Morse Study Room really is a hidden gem. If you're still in Boston, I'd recommend visiting the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. It's a special place and I think you'd love it! (There are several works by Sargent there - he was great friends with Mrs. Gardner and her art advisor, Bernard Berenson.)

    I love that you're ironing your jacket in your hotel room. You're dressing up to meet a very special friend. I iron when I travel as well, and people laugh at me for it. At least now I can say I'm in good company! 😊

    I know what you mean about getting teary seeing the paintings in person. I recall being at the National Museum in DC one day and becoming almost overwhelmed by the beauty of some of the landscape paintings. I didn't think an inanimate object could move me to tears until that day.

    I think this is one of my favorite videos from you. Your joy towards sargents work is infectious and wholesome. Hes clearly one of your personal heros.
    As someone who also doesnt want to get married or have kids, i also relate a lot to you saying this is a similar level of big day for you.
    Most of my big life milestone events have been going on vacation or going to events and experiences with friends.
    I feel like sometimes people feel sad towards people like us and think we're missing out on life, but ive never really felt that way. Im happy and get all the same parts of the human experience

      Very refreshing to read this, thank you. Sargent didn’t get married or have kids. He painted or sketched most days of his life. Or read books, or played the piano. Or went out to dinner by himself.

    You’ve reminded me of a special day I had about 25 years ago. I was visiting the UK for work and the UK Producer (who basically hosted our visit to the Liverpool area) knew I loved JMW Turner. He arranged for us to have a private viewing of sketches and watercolors at the Lady Lever Museum. It was such a special day getting to peek at those paintings up close. Our Producer arranging the day to see the art is amongst one of the most thoughtful things anyone has ever done for me too. I will always treasure that day.
    Thanks for the reminder and for sharing your visit and study of these Sargents! Always a treat to learn from you.

    I love Sargent too & appreciate your making this video. What often floors me, just blows my mind while studying his paintings is upon approaching them, seeing the brush work up close (esp. with oils) just how much he says with so few strokes. I have to go up & back & again just to even comprehend how he did it. The other thing I love is just how consistently strong & beautiful his work & over so many paintings. Amazingly prolific painter, consistently excellent.

    I adored seeing this artwork on tv. I don’t know if the tv does the true artwork justice to the true colours, Sargent used, but it was a delight to see such originals. I’m touched by how emotional you get. It’s lovely!!! Do the artists use the exact same paints as we have available to us today? If so, isn’t that amazing that we can choose the same colours as they did? Do the makers of the paints-Windsor & newton, etc alter over time, & how would you know what makers the artist used at the time?…I have so many questions!!! Please show us some more like this video. It’s a delight. Thanks Rajiv.

    • @rajivsurendra
      @rajivsurendra  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks, Jess. No, the colors on the screen are unfortunately not accurate to what I saw in person. Also, I've learned from my friend who is a paintings conservator at a national museum in Canada that the paints used by 19th Century artists were very different to the ones we use today. Many of the pigments are still available today, but it's the formulation of the binders and the consistency of the paints that have really changed.

    • @jessbarclay472
      @jessbarclay472 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m kind of glad that naturally, the production of paints have “improved” but also it’s a pity. I wonder how the conservators match the paints so well. I watch Baumgaten, a painting conservator on another channel & he matches the colours….but now you say the recipe n possibly the colour source may have changed too. I guess that’s progress. Don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing. Much care from “out bush” in Booubyjan, Queensland, Australia….on one of the oldest farms in Qld establish 1846…..give it a google. Wild red deer & pigs, wallaby’s, goannas, echidnas….& stunning sunrises & sunsets. Rolling hills n creeks. I wish you could see it all. Much care. Jessica

    I feel that way when I look at paintings by past masters. You can see their brushstrokes and feel their energy. You can see their pencil strokes and feel the way their mind works. It’s like they are still alive in some strange way (yes, like a ghost) because they left their life essence right there for us. Sargent is my favorite artist and I loved seeing his originals and the colors and texture of the paper he used. Thank you for this gift, Rajiv. You are a joy and a wonder!!

    Thank your for even more excitement of my new love of watercolors. What an inspiration and insightful detail to all things in this artis work. Im in awe of your oun eyes describing the tray of watercolors and your brushes.
    I'm looking at you and the corner to the left of you, I see shadows, textures, and many hughs of colors. While seeing his sketch of humans outline intricate details... I saw them in your own body in the movement of your arm, the muscle of your arm and shoulder against your crisp white t-shirt. The lines in your collar bone up to your neck are also an intense painting form if you ever thought of drawing yourself. Your lips and the line in your smile near your lips above your jaw line. This is unique to only yourself. Your jaw, line the lips the form as you annunciation of words. I could almost see how the artist eye sees and chooses what and where to highlight. Watercolors I've only just begun to play with, and your video came up. Thank you, and also thank you for knowing what you find joy in celebrating in your personal life. I can listen to your voice and hear your passion in all things you share in your videos. Your life I find sounds has had no accidents it has the upmost purpose. As if on purpose, deliberately in living it.
    Thank you for describing how I myself feel when my life has been deliberate to my own desires. Being true to ourselves and our feelings of passion for the past. Not only our own but others who have lived and used and loved good a great quality beautiful item that either please the eye, the paint palette or the cycle of a ride in the same city that hundreds years prior had been road by the owner in the same way you yourself had enjoyed.
    Forever enjoy and bring the passion you bring to your own life and those lives you touch. You are a rare ray of sunshine and a breath of fresh air all in one.

    😊Thank you for this interesting and informative video! Sargent is my favorite watercolorist. I have wonderful book called JOHN SINGER SARGENT WATERCOLORS which I originally found in my local library and on page 207, it gives Sargent's materials. I had no idea that you could request seeing his paintings at the MFA in Boston. I live on Cape Cod so I am excited to inquire. Originally I am a native New Yorker, so I am wondering for you Rajas, if the Brooklyn Museum would have a similar option for Homer's watercolors. I think they have the largest collection of his works. Another option if anyone is going to Paris is...years ago, I applied to paint in Monet's Garden in Giverny. I was accepted and it only cost $25! The garden was closed to the public on Mondays for the gardeners so that is when one could go. Not sure if that is still available. Cape Cod is extremely informal even for important occasions but I agree that one shows respect by wearing nicer clothes for such a rare viewing. A friend and I paint every week at my house and although we don't get dressed up, he and I just never wear something old or look sloppy.

    I'm someone who is obsessed with figure painting/drawing, Sargent is one of my favorite artist when it comes to Male figure art. I've told my friends that I feel like Sargent ironically paints women powerfully in their flowing gowns but his approach to painting men is always romantic to me.
    Whenever I get a chance to see any of his male portraits or figure painting inn person I gush over them for a really long time. The Museum of Fine Arts Boston is on my bucket list just to see that painting of Thomas McKeller that used to hang in Sargent's study.

    You are such a remarkable human being. Your appreciation for both the mundane and the magnificent is spectacular.
    I have to also say how much I love that you unabashedly shared that you’ll never marry and never have children. I’m in the same club and I wish more people were as thoughtful about pairing and procreation as us. Just because you can procreate does not mean you should or you have to. And partnering with someone … that is a whole ‘nuther thing that I’ve tried from all angles. I’m finally at the age where no one asks why I’m not married and my partner and I have been together long enough where no one gives a shit what we do.
    But back to you - I don’t think you fully understand how much people like us who watch you appreciate every single little detail that you share and point out. You make everything so much more interesting and wonderful.

    Fascinating thank you for sharing it with us. I had no idea you could do this at museums. I recognized that first painting and thought first “his art looks so much like Rajiv’s!”😂
    I must have recognized the copy from your apartment 🙄🤪💚

    Great to see these paintings through your lens Rajiv, thank you! I think shadows are a great trademark in artists, as they do contain a lot of colors, I think shadows reflect the opaque colors in the environment and light on the subject. Marriage! is it a beginning or and end of something...how many others do iron their white bed linens, marble polish to silk touch their toilets, and cannot watch a Hollywood formula movie...you know the ones...just saying😊🌈

    Congratulations on your special experience. You greatly enjoy subtle colors. You would love to draw with silverpoint. Maybe you do. You just put a rod of silver in a lead holder the color turns to sepia when the silver tarnishs. Silverpoint is archival and will look great with your watercolors. I have never tried fine silver just sterling.

    Love the video you’ve given me a renewed appreciation of his work. Also why not do a video on the Hudson River artists?

    Interesting lead-in to the video...Sargent's work looks like yours, especially that one of the columns. You taught me a few things today about painting and the value of studying something in person. I like studying original literary collectibles like Kerouac's notebooks. They make me feel like the artist/writer is alive before me -- I commune with the dead :)

    I really loved this! I've seen most of John S. Sargent's work, and I love them so much because of the attention to blending and details. But I do have a question when it comes to you painting. Have you ever thought of using other mediums other than watercolors? Or have you already done so? And if so, what style are you mostly into?

    Rajiv, I'm delighted with each and every video you post. I was wondering if you know Joaquin Sorolla, a famous Spanish painter, who was an expert in dealing with light. It reminds me a little bit of Sargent. Not that I know a lot about this topic, but just wanted to share this with you (from Argentina). Good wishes and thanks for your beautiful art!!!!!

      Yes, I do and I love Sorolla's work! My watercolor teacher, Marcelo, references Sorolla's paintings regularly.
