Interesting. I had read that Johnny usually didn't talk to guests during the breaks because he didn't want the audience to think he was pre-planning the next thing... he wanted it to be spontaneous. Billy Crystal had said when he came on the show, he was told by the producers not to say anything to Johnny during the commercial break. Crystal, however, said he just couldn't resist asking Johnny "So, how's it going?" Johnny politely said "I'm doing good." and that was it.
you can tell that johnny really liked you. almost in the same regards as being proud of a family member, even if it was his ‘television’ family. but i think you broke through with him on a personal level, perhaps you tapped into his midwestern roots, background and upbringing? you could tell by the twinkle in his eye that you took him back to home just a bit. hope you are doing well. as johnny would attest to, we are all richer for your experience, as are you.
Im a professor at DSU on the east coast. I still perform various concerts and events, but Im primarily a composer and trying to get one of my shows on Broadway. All the best, david
You definitely have a talent, David. I know getting to meet Johnny Carson had to be a chance of a lifetime. My very best to you and hopefully you will get on Broadway.
David Tolley I ran across this video today. I remember when Johnny picked you out of the audience, wearing a T-shirt and flip flops. What a great night. Thanks David!
It always moves me when a rookie is pushed to the plate with no warning and knocks it out of the park. You never know when the moment might be the only moment. Bravo.
Someone posted your first performance on Facebook today and that’s how I wound up here seeing your second one. Really enjoyed both! You’re a talented and humble guy.
David Tolley my man you absolutely killed it on your first appearance, and this one is just as fantastic! So happy you got to showcase your talent. If I ever learn how to play the piano, you will be whom I get inspiration from. Phenomenal!
+David Tolley So cool to learn about you today and in addition, that you attended OSU for your Ph.D. Hope that went well. We are in Yellow Springs and throw concerts in Columbus all the time..would love to have you attend. Best wishes!
I found the original impromptu performance by David Tolley on The Tonight Show to be very entertaining. David's handsome wholesome appearance and genuine talent was very apparent with just one tune played. I loved his ease of playing "Memories" and his "showmanship" with his warm smile did remind me of the great Liberace and the manner in which he performed. It is very clear he enjoyed playing that piece from "CATS" and seemed to do it without any stage fright! Very refreshing to see and certainly very entertaining to see and hear! This original arrangement of "Amazing Grace" for his second appearance on The Tonight Show shows the immense talent he possesses. Would love to see and hear more by David.

I have bipolar 2 but when I listen to your music my mind calms down and I can relax, if only for a few minutes. Thank you
A few months ago my 20 yr old piano was destroyed in a house fire..(no one was hurt) unrepairable, for Christmas I was gifted a keyboard. I’ve been staring at it for the past few weeks…I couldn’t get myself to sit and play until today. That’s when I saw your debut performance on the T.S. And also this performance that followed. To say you inspired me to play after many months is an understatement. Thank you for sharing your incredible talent with us. You deserve everything that comes your way.
What better way to EXALT Him Who SAVED us!?! On television in front of a live audience with the GREATEST talk show host ever, introducing you. Talk about the JOY OF THE LORD! Grace raining down all around. TRULY amazing!
David, your impromptu performance on the Tonight Show is exactly what I've been looking for to show my sons, 14 and 10, both of which have an unbelievable God given gift for piano. I keep telling them not to be afraid to perform and let themselves have fun with it in front of their class mates in school. Not to be prideful but for the shear enjoyment of it and to see the response and joy it gives to those around. Your enthusiasm and talent is truly and gift. Have you played with The Piano Guys before because it sure sounds like you could be one of them. God bless.
Hi I'm glad you enjoyed it! Tell them to keep practicing, and when I'm on tour, if ever I'm in a city near you I'll give them a free piano lesson. All the best to you and your boys, David
You jazzed that hymn up Mr. Tolly and then lulled it then up ticked it to a symphonic melody. You are very talented.I'm a self taught pianist. You inspire me to learn how to read music, I only play by ear but I did compose a song. My mom bought me a Magnus Cord Organ with the letters on the keys. Thanks for the video. My mom let me stay up to watch Johnny Carson since it was past my bedtime.
David Tolley, I remember when you were on the Johnny Carson show and I thought you were wonderful and I so enjoyed watching this again! I have watched this 3 times this morning! You are wonderful!
Wow David, you deserve so much more! You can hold your own with the great pianist of the world! You give me cold chills every time I hear you play!! 👏🏻 bravo!!

And they picked you I was so excited when they did lol, little things you know like that and when I heard you play I knew I was right lol. I am so happy for your continued success in life you give me joy listening to you play.
David, I keep coming back to this, so you might as well know. For the first performance, totally unprepared, you knocked it out of the park. So much talent, such a sense of humor, knowing that something like 15 million people were watching you. Your parents must have been thrilled. And then this performance! Just superb!! I would imagine you must be having an outstanding career. You check all the boxes. Well done! Lee Sheldon

It is always a gift to be able to do what you love and have passion. Sometimes, a serendipitous moment helps, but your talent is what shined through. Fantastic TV moment.
Just saw for the your first and second performance on Johnny Carson!! I was so overwhelmed hearing you play, unprepared, "Memories", which was fantastic, but then I was curious about what you were doing now and found the clip of your 2nd visit to the Carson show and was just in awe of your performance of your many sounds of "Amazing Grace" which was just awesome! Just absolutely loved it and your incredible talent. Coincidentally that song is one that my niece Erin Krakow & her co-star, just sang in this 3rd season premier episode on Hallmarks, "When calls the Heart"!
I just saw both performances. Wonderful! Going to look David Tolley up. I have a degree in Music Education ('78) from Ohio State. Proud of David! Go, BUCKS!
I'm a big Carson fan, and thought I had watched them all. I'd never seen this until this morning. I saw David Tolley's 1st appearance earlier this morning. What a hoot ! Thanks, I always watched Johnny as a kid and was a big fan, and then actually meeting him, he was so enthusiastically kind to me, I will try to post or upload the entire 10 minute interview he did with me on the guest couch and so you can see, take care
Started piano lessons at 38 years old. Been playing for 13 years, my first performance was last April at age 50 in an auditorium in front of 300+ people, black tie candlelight event. Someone heard me playing one day and then contacted me a few weeks later to perform on stage with a singer. At first I declined, but then reconsidered when I realized that I may never get another chance to spark a career or something out of this effort. Was a terrifying, traumatic few weeks leading up to the performance, but it started to get a little bit fun mid way through the piece. Only made two mistakes, but luckily the wrong notes I hit were in the key of A major which is the key of the piece, so not too dissonant...thank goodness 🎹🎼🎵🎶
I absolutely love this! I watched the first one and was so glad to see the second one. Such wonderful talent at a young age. Now I’m gonna look you up and see what you’re doing today.
JUST HAPPENED TO BE GOING THROUGH LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO WATCH AND FOUND THE JOHNY CARSON SHOW AND YOU. I LISTENED TO THE SHOW, AND WAS JUST AMAZED AT HOW WONDERFUL YOU WERE AND TALENTED ON THAT SHOW. GOD GAVE YOU A TREMENDOUS TALENT. KEEP ON PLAYING. ALL THE BEST.
Absolutely beautiful - I enjoyed every second of it. I watched it 4 times straight and it gave me goosebumps. You are an amazing man and a fabulous musician!
Thanks Shari I'm so glad you enjoyed it I wrote that arrangement many years ago when I was leaving Ohio and moving out to Los Angeles, it was like a goodbye gift to the church I was musical director at during college. God bless, David
This was so much fun to watch. I was perusing Carson shows (it’s a great cheer up in these nutty times) and stumbled across your first performance. It was so hard to believe in these days of conspiracies and lies that I took a double take and googled up your name to find out you really “are” a musician, and a good one at that! Still I found it hard to accept that it wasn’t a setup. If I happened to watch the show back in the 80’s when I was a young man I would have believed it right away. But 45 years later and I’ve grown to doubt just about anything that comes out of anyone’s mouth, especially on TV. If you can’t believe the politicians and if you can’t believe the media and you can’t believe Dr. Fauci, at least that’s what they would like us to think, then how can you believe this! Then, when I found you did a second show it was absolute proof. You were the real deal, and Johnny REALLY was the real deal. I’m glad I found you - I hope more people find you too.
Thanks for the message Rick, I share your sentiments, Im very cautious about what is put in front of us these days, it’s hard to believe anything is really as it appears, but that first show on Johnny was just the way it looked. If I knew that 28 million people would be watching that night, I never would have raised my hand, lol. Take care, David
@@David.L.Tolley - you prayed before you played, eh? Glad you got the free exposure (eg In tourist mode and then more formal sans tails! 😂). Loved the closeup on the sandals. Good on the cameraman! God continue to lift up our nation during these apocalyptic times through your music and His amazing grace.
My dad never missed The Tonight Show but I can't say the same, so it was charming to see you on TH-cam. Much success in the future and I hope you someday make it to the rarified air of Broadway with your lovely music...
Thank you for your wonderful comments. You're probably a much better pianist than me it sounds like. 1rst show was December 1985 2nd show was January 1986 It really wasnt staged, my brother wanted to go sight seeing and then the TONIGHT SHOW before he went back to Ohio the next day. Thanks
WOW. That is incredibly beautiful. By far the best piano arrangement and performance of Amazing Grace I have ever watched! Superb!! I remember your first performance on Johnny and after all these years I saw a post on facebook and got me to this.
I don't know how many times I've watched The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and didn't see this? I saw the first performance a few minutes ago on Facebook and loved it. I went looking for more and loved it even more. Thank you David!
I remember YOU on Johnny Carson BOTH times. You were fantastic! So gifted and you made playing that piano look so easy. Your 'Memories' from Cats has always been a favorite. 'Amazing Grace' is a church and my dad's favorite before he died. Congrats to you and your family on your gifted talent. God Bless You and your family! Linda Kearney in Roanoke, Va
I remember watching the original show, and it's nice seeing how your career developed over the decades. These videos have made the Facebook rounds lately!
How did I ever miss these performances? I watched Johnny Carson with my mother every night on my way home. Absolutely loved your performances. Thank you for the memories of a time not so jaded. God Bless
David you're quite a creative person, because who else could come up with such a unique arrangement for Amazing Grace?? No one! But I think I'm not alone in saying, that your first time on the Carson show, was one of those special TV moments, and I'm thankful that we have You Tube, so I can watch it whenever I want. All the best!
AMAZING arrangement!!! Very talented!! Enjoyed your first appearance too....CATS is my favorite musical...saw it several times in my teens....MEMORY is great and your performance was breath taking!!!
Simply amazing! Aside from your tremendous talent, the absolute joy that radiates from you while playing is a sure sign that God's light shines through you.
How wonderful...for you! I once went to the View...and the comedian/ entertainer for the audience preshow was sick.and begged someone to help him out my friends pointed to me.I sang "You Make Me Feel So Young." I got to entertain the stars on the View and their guest- Jamie Lee Curtis came and shook my hand! I believe these things happen in our life when we need a little boost! And it was such a witness to watch you being blessed! Thanks for running up there that night. Beautiful piano.
David, I came across you on FB with your 1985 performance. And of course I had to search for more.Amazing and Humble Talent! Thank you for sharing your gift. Much Kudos from Arlington, Texas.
You are right David. There is only one Johnny Carson and his Tonight Show was unique. There will never be anyone that will match him. Truly the king of late night. My wife and I truly enjoyed listening to you play. I have always envied people who can play the piano like you. It is my favorite instrument.
Unfortunately, I didn't see this second appearance.. thank you for sharing it here! That arrangement of Amazing Grace was really dynamic. I always wanted to meet Johnny Carson, he was a phenomenal person. I wish you great health and an abundance of happiness David.
I was on FB today and saw the first video on Johnny Carson, that brought me to this one. The first is of course wonderful but this one is Phenomenal! Truly! I’ll be watching for your show to hit Broadway!! 😃❤️
David, a friend of mine just posted your first appearance on the Tonight Show and I enjoyed reading about your career since then. You personality comes through in your music. Congrats on all of your achievements.
How in the world had I never heard of you? I have no idea, but I am so glad I know of you now. You are absolutely amazing. And humble and sweet. I am so happy for your success and I thank you for making my life better with your music. You have a lifetime fan as of today.
I can not tell you how much I miss Johnny Carson. He was just great! Such class and fantastic comedic timing. If you have ever spent time with him on TV you know why everyone wants to try to fill his shoes. I had one opportunity to meet the man in person away from LA. He was calm and peaceful. Mr Tolly was a very fortunate man to just be picked out of the audience one night and then make a second appearance on the show. Thanks Reddit
Just popped up on my cell. I still miss Johnny. Made me cry. We so need nice guys without agendas. Just Kindness with some happiness mixed in. God bless you

So amazing, David! I was a professional pianist and was good but you are truly great! I am so glad that I ran across your first two appearances on The Tonight Show tonight!!!
What an incredible anointed gift the Lord bestowed upon you and using it well and all those having been blessed by you. Thoroughly enjoyed this version of Amazing Grace! Thank you David and for the day your life became even more enriched in 1985 on the Johnny Carson Show. Blessings.
Just WOW! Watching your performances on The Tonight Show makes me think of how we all strive to find our place and purpose on this planet, and without a doubt.... you clearly found yours!! Well Done Good Sir!!
David, fabulous impromptu performance of Memory! Amazing Grace knocks it out of the park for me! Wishing you the very best success in your musical career! Deano
Hi David, Someone shared a video in Facebook about a random guy in the audience who was invited to play the piano because a guest pianist was not able to make it, then later became famous, that's how I got here. :-) So far, I have seen 2 videos, the first and second time you appeared in Johnny's show and I am going to watch more of your videos. You are simply amazing and funny too. I am a fan! I hope you can come here in the Philippines! God bless! Jane
I'll never forget the first episode. I'm so glad I found it on youtube because then I found THIS arrangement, which I forgot I had seen as well when it aired and it is Amazing! Grace and peace to you.

1rst show was December 1985
2nd show was January 1986
It really wasnt staged, my brother wanted to go sight seeing and then the TONIGHT SHOW before he went back to Ohio the next day.
Thanks
WOW. That is incredibly beautiful. By far the best piano arrangement and performance of Amazing Grace I have ever watched! Superb!! I remember your first performance on Johnny and after all these years I saw a post on facebook and got me to this.
WOW

So good!! I love the piano and to see both Mr.Talley's performances for Johnny is such a treat. Tho I did miss the flip flops.😊

I came across your story on Facebook. It was inspiring! Love from the Philippines!
Hi Christine,
THANKYOU.
If I end touring in the Philippines this next summer I will send you a message.

You are right David. There is only one Johnny Carson and his Tonight Show was unique. There will never be anyone that will match him. Truly the king of late night. My wife and I truly enjoyed listening to you play. I have always envied people who can play the piano like you. It is my favorite instrument.
Jay Leno came close but after him, it went way downhill.
Unfortunately, I didn't see this second appearance.. thank you for sharing it here! That arrangement of Amazing Grace was really dynamic. I always wanted to meet Johnny Carson, he was a phenomenal person.
I wish you great health and an abundance of happiness David.
Thank you
Absolutely Stunning..!!.. Beautifully Done…👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Wow. I'm just now seeing this, along with your first one. Wonderful.

I'm a Christian too. God gave you an amazing gift, Dave, over the top........Thanks for sharing it with the world.
Hello Rebecca
How are you doing?
Just popped up on my cell. I still miss Johnny. Made me cry. We so need nice guys without agendas. Just Kindness with some happiness mixed in. God bless you
I was in the audience, when you first performed for Johnny. It was totally random; not staged. A great day.

Hi David,
Someone shared a video in Facebook about a random guy in the audience who was invited to play the piano because a guest pianist was not able to make it, then later became famous, that's how I got here. :-) So far, I have seen 2 videos, the first and second time you appeared in Johnny's show and I am going to watch more of your videos. You are simply amazing and funny too. I am a fan!
I hope you can come here in the Philippines!
God bless!
