Norton Nemesis V8 Rebuild - Episode 5

  • In this video im finishing off the engine strip by removing the cylinder liners and sorting out a few faults with the gearbox and alternator drive gears.
The Norton Nemeses is a pre production prototype that was made in the late 90's with claims of a 200+mph top speed from its 1500cc fuel injected V8 engine.
As far as I'm aware, this is the only bike that has survived but if any of you know of other bikes please leave a comment. This bike is owned by the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham UK has been on display as a non running exhibit for many years.
I have already worked on the bike last year getting the engine to run after a few rudimentary checks, new oil and batteries for series 12 of Henry Cole's "The Motorbike Show" where Henry rode it for a few miles up to around 50 mph, but it wasn't running very well and was leaking a lot of oil and coolant.
Episodes of "The Motorbike show" can be seen on itvx player on line and some shorter edits are available on Henrys TH-cam channel.
Over the coming months I will be stripping the bike to sort out a few issues with the V8 engine and hopefully make it run and ride how it was intended 25 years ago.

@@randylucas2458 source of the problems is the chaotic English craftsmanship that time.
I remember English produced cars from the late '80s with the front windscreen never glued to the car.
The quality that time was horrible...
And the V8 that Allen works on is a example of that time...

It's always easy to criticise a previous owner's work. Keep that in mind when doing your own repairs, and when looking at someone else's. Often people were just doing the best with the materials and equipement they had, the budget they had (and ALL of us are working to a budget), and the skills they had. We're all learners, for life.

Prototypes are often built under immense time pressure to check fit and function or to perform a short term demonstration. If Norton's engineers had got the chance to build a second and third prototype they would have produced something much better.

Spot on.... I have a 1993 KLX650C supermoto project in my garage. My plan was to build one bike out of three neglected old barn finds. Two of which had been pulled apart before been shoved into a couple of dozen way too hard baskets....
I figured a single cylinder project would be within my amateur mechanic DIY skill level.
I now think the 93 KLX650 was perhaps a few years ahead of its time but could definitely have been designed to be a whole lot easier to work on. Or maybe it's my much less capable 64 year old brain? 🤔🤣
It's fascinating to watch such a patient knowledgeable perfectionist at work. And no wonder Norton went broke!

I'm waiting for the government to provide a huge arena where we can watch things live ,smell and taste Mrs Millyards cooking thus bringing peace and contentment to our lives . Honestly the best thing on TH-cam, been on the spanners myself for over 40 years and feel like an apprentice when I watch ! I love the cutaways to wildlife , old clocks and other memorabilia , such a talent and pleasure to watch .

Excellent fabrication for the shift linkage, Allen! This engine will run and shift perfectly when you get fresh liners fitted to each piston and reinstalled in the crankcase assembly. An absolute pleasure to see in this video!
Cheers from across the pond, and looking forward to the next episode! Thank you!

The clock in the background plus Mr. Millyard's narration is the best ASMR. And you know the bike will be way better after the fettling, we might even see some hand fabricated new parts in this build.
