How to Make a Basic Cushion | 1 Piece Box Cushion | 30 Minute Cushion

  • For this chair I wanted to make a really basic cushion for the back rest of the seat. This 1 piece box cushion fit the bill perfectly. The best description of this style is a knife edge cushion (but I really could not find anywhere on the internet that had this exact style that I came up with)
    I am naming it the basic cushion, because you only need to cut one piece of fabric to make it. And here's how you can make your own.

    What a great tutorial! I was watching 30 minute, 40 minute videos on how to do this wrap around miter corners, all day and got such unclear instructions. This girl did a clear, perfectly understandable tutorial in 7 minutes. Thank you so much!!!

    CAUTION!!
    Use the *updated* written instructions when measuring and cutting the gussets, especially for thicker cushions, not the ones presented here.
    This video is fantastic just as everyone says, but we had to adjust our cushion to be 1/2" taller since we cut the gussets using the video instructions. This also made the resulting cushions narrower than we'd like so they don't sit perfectly in the chairs. We're still happy with them but wish we hadn't taken the video at face value!

    Brilliant tutorial !!!
    I have just made my first cushion cover, I followed everything but actually missed the zipper out and it has worked out really well. My fabric is curtain fabric so didn't want to waste a zipper as the sofa's are reclaimed and would add more cost to my project but it has worked well. I might just go in and reinforce a little by hand or sew closed if I can be bothered. Thank you I have 2 more to do and then I have re-upholsterd a sofa and chair for £70 with Orla Kiely fabric !!

  • @60Robyn
    @60Robyn ปีที่แล้ว

    I am enjoying following your instruction! Questions. Are you sewing 1/2 inch seam allowance all the way around. I am a quilter and 1/4 is the standard. Also, when using your cushion measurements are you using the original foam cushion measurements or the new measurements after adhering the batting? Also your batting looks like it has some type of outside coating instead of the batting I am use to using for quilting? Thanks for your help!

    This may sound kind of like a of weird request, but, flight sim pilots need seat cushions that have a "square notch" cut-out at the front of the cushion that is 110 mm x 110mm. This allows us to have the flight joystick being placed in between our legs. Real planes have the joystick center mounted between their legs. How would we go about cutting and sewing this square notch? If you Google an F/A-18C cockpit you will see what I mean about the notch for the joystick. Thank you!

    One thing missing are ties - Do you have a tutorial for these if you are putting them in chairs? Agree, this video was very well put together. Are all of your seam allowances 1/2 inches?

  • @mmcohen166
    @mmcohen166 ปีที่แล้ว

    Overall a good tutorial - but the zipper install is a challenge with the zipper pull. You could separate the zipper sew each side, then reinstall the zipper pull. However, I am unclear on the seam allowances. is is a 1"seam allowance on all sides OR is it a half inch on all sides? I noticed in the video you did what looks like a 5/8" seam allowance on the gussets. I agree with other viewers as to why the gusset formula is different on the fold. I made my cushion per the formula but did not wrap with dacron and the cushion fit was off in the depth (or width) it is an easy project once the measurements and SA's are accounted for.

    Loved the tutorial but confused about the gusset measurements. I understand that you use half the thickness of the foam and add 1/2” for seam EXCEPT for the fold. The. It’s just 1/2 the thickness of the foam, right? Why were your fold gussets 1 and 1:2 inches by 2 inches?
    Also the fold has to cover the wide part of the seat cushion - did I miss that somewhere for fabric measurement? Thank you!!!

    Love this tutorial! Just one question (maybe it's obvious), the number you get from the calculation for the size of the gussets... is that for the width of the gusset, height of the gusset, or both?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The width and height are going to be the same for the 4 gussets that are on the outside corners. The gussets along the fold are going to be a little different. The side that is along the folded edge, should be shorter by 1/2" because you don't have to account for the seam allowance

    Hi there. Your video is the best I've seen on this subject. I have a problem in the fact that the width of my foam is 12.25 and the length is 35.75, thickness 5". Because of the length it would be best if I had the zipper along the back (L) of the cushion. The way you cut out the gussets wouldn't work for me. I think with your instructions I would cut out a piece 82.5" L x 18.25" W. But the gussets would have to be cut out differently. Could you help me understand how I would go about that?

    • @onlinefabricstore

      I have a sewing machine. I just pulled it out and got is serviced. I made these and they are beautiful!!!! I was too scared to do the zipper so I made flap and used Velcro. I’m kind of glad I did because putting the cushion in was a struggle! It also gave me play if the cushion was a little large.
      I’m using this pattern to make a tote bag.
