How to make a simple square box cushion cover with piping and hidden zip.

- In this video we use techniques from previous videos to make a simple square shape box cushion with piping/ welt all around the top and bottom and a hidden zip with pocket at the end.
The foam cushion inner is 10cm or 4 inches so we cut the border at the same thickness to ensure a nice tight fit. The zip is cut at about 2.5cm or 1 inch thicker than the border before zip is added so it finishes at the same size.
We made the piping and the border both longer than needed so they can be trimmed to the right size while the cover is constructed.
The top and bottom panels have had the stitching allowance added so they end up the right size after piping and border are sewn on. We use 1/2 inch or 12mm stitching allowance.
We hope that this all makes sense and can help people with some basic upholstery skills. Feel free to ask questions and we will answer as best as we can.

Thanks I'll keep trying. My corners refused to match after doing piping, yet I had cut equal portions🙈. My box is not boxy😊
@@gitahililian5838 what fabric? If it has a pile it can walk when sewing and doesn’t match up easily, velvets are notorious for this. You want to make lots of reference marks before sewing to be sure it’s all meeting up at each stage
Velvet it is. I've now learnt something. Thanks sir😊
@@gitahililian5838 yeah velvet is tricky, make loads of reference marks and keep an eye on them so they all meet up when sewing, best of luck!

Hello again! It took me all day but I’m finally done making a 74“ x 15“ bench cushion for my patio. you make it look so easy. I was using Sunbrella fabric which is pretty heavy and those corners are pretty tricky but it’s done and it’s pretty and the continuous zipper although tricky to get it started looks really nice. Thank you again for your lovely tutorial. I have two more cushions to go.
Hi and thanks for the update, that’s a really long cushion and also tricky working with sunbrella so want to say massive well done from us! Practice makes perfect so the next ones should only get easier 😅 thanks again for watching our videos and for the feedback.
I was wondering about sewing the thickness of the seams. I have duck canvas to use and hope my machine can handle it!
It was good to hear yours turned out well
I love watching your videos and your instructions are spot on. Even with that I would gladly hire you to make those for me since Pier 1 has gone out of business where I used to get my cushions. Do you hire out?
Thank you very much that’s great to hear! We are usually very busy so don’t have a lot of time and also places that make up cushions non stop are usually a lot cheaper than we can be. Feel free to email us on contact@premierupholstery.co.uk with some pictures/ sizes of what you’ve got and we can take a look though.
What a fabulous tutorial‼️😎 Thank you so much, no unnecessary talking, just so straight forward thanks! 🙏🌻
Thank you very much for the great feedback and for watching 😁
I'm a little confused, I've cut & "piped" the top & bottom panels - look great! But what is the purpose of the extra short side panel? I've cut all the side panels including the zipper panel - all fine (and broke a needle accidentally sewing onto the metal cinch that holds the bottom of the zipper!). I also assume the short side panel is sewn to the cinched end of that zipper panel, slightly unclear from the video. I think I would would understand better if I knew the purpose of the small panel. I've watched the video many times. It helps me to watch it at less than normal speed.
Hi and thanks for watching. The extra panel is just an extension to show what to do when your border panel isn’t long enough, it’s not needed for smaller cushions but when doing large cushions you would need one or possibly 2 (one each side) to make it reach all the way round. Hope this helps and best of luck with your cushion. Feel free to ask more questions on here or email us on contact@premierupholstery.co.uk with pictures if it helps.
@@premierupholstery-upholste90 Thanks so much for the prompt reply! I actually had plenty of material lengthwise. Oh well, I'll either remove the extra panel or just make it with an extra seam in the border. I'm replacing the worn out cover on an antique sleigh seat - 29x17, using the original disassembled cover as a template. Thanks for the great video!

Thankyou for this tutorial. I'm a rank upholstery amateur ..... not only have I never done sewing with piping before; but never attempted a box cushion .... let alone with piping. I found your video to make a box cushion. However, it begins by stating all pattern pieces cut out. How do I know what measurements I use. Did I miss a video? I am just learning how to sew and need it broken down into baby steps. Please help.
Hi and thanks for watching. No we haven’t made a video showing how to size yet. You basically want to measure your cushion inner and then add on your stitching allowance. So if using 1/2” allowance for a 20” square cushion you would cut at 21” then the zip wants to be roughly a third of the way round the sides and border cut slightly longer than needed. If you’re cushion is 4” thick you’ll want to cut border the same so it’s nice and tight and zip piece 1” thicker so that when you add the zipper it ends up the same size as the border. We have made more videos showing how to make the zip, piping, and how to sew them on if you have a look at our channel. Hopefully this all makes sense but feel free to ask if need more help.
Great tutorial. 1 question. What is the purpose of the small border piece that is sewn between the zipper case and long border piece?
Thank you.
Hi and thanks for watching our video. The extra piece is just an extension to show what to do if your cushion is too big for a width of fabric to reach around each side and also what do do if you’re limited on how much fabric you have. Hope that helps and best of luck with your projects!
Lifesaver.
My side panels were shifting terribly when I joined the top panel.
Now onto figuring this out on an irregular cushion cover ... with an arm extension.
Thanks for watching and we’re glad that the video helped. The basics for a shaped cushion are the same, plenty of reference marks and make sure they’re meeting up as you see the second panel on. Don’t be afraid to stop and take it apart if it doesn’t look like its working rather than soldier on and have more work to fix it. We will be making videos showing irregular shaped cushion in the future when time allows.
Very nice. Thank you for the tutorial.
You’re very welcome, thank you for watching 👍🏼
Wow you are good. Thanks for the perfect instructions!
Thank you, years of practice helps a lot😁. Thanks for watching.
I seem to miss how the notches were made. Initially you folded the panel and made one notch in the center, later there was many notches when you transferred them to the opposing side of the border. Should there be centered notches on every side of the panels? Thank you so much for this awesome instruction video.
Hi and thanks for watching. Yes make a centred notch on each side for your reference points. Mark them by folding and cutting with scissors or by making a mark with a pen or pencil and then using that. Best of luck with your project!
Exactly the video I was looking for!👍

Great work. Thanks for taking the time to share. My question is, Is there a standard formula used to arrive at the price price to charge for an upholstery job?
Thank you very much and thanks for watching. Prices vary quite a lot depending on different factors like where in the world you are and also local rent/ rates etc that need to be covered. Ideally you need to work out what you need to earn per hour and then price each job by how many hours it will take. This can be tricky to begin with if you’ve got limited experience but the more you do the better you’ll be able to estimate time involved in each piece. If you’re just starting out it is well worth finding a friendly local shop and asking if you can spend some time working with them for a bit to gain experience. Hope this helps.
Thanks much, it certainly does.
@@anngeeder5181 fantastic! Feel free to email us as well if you ever need any help contact@premierupholstery.co.uk
I did it! Thanks to you, I was able to make a box cushion with piping and a zipper. Looks great!!! (I used a different video on how to make the zipper panel where you fold the panel in half and sew down the half the width of the zipper, then sew in the zipper and seam rip out the initial zip. I was too nervous to open the zipper and sew that way.) But my cushion looks professionally done!!! Really no mistakes thanks to you!!! I wish I could attach a photo! Much appreciated!
That’s fantastic to hear we’re really happy that our videos are helping people. We have seen that zip technique before and it’s probably a good way to guarantee a pattern match but for speed and not having to remove thread after we prefer this way. Please feel free to send us a picture to contact@premierupholstery.co.uk as we do like to see the result, thank you very much for watching!

Can we make it with ordinary swewing machine? Thanks for this vidéo !
Hi and thanks for watching. Yes it will be possible but we would recommend a light fabric as it will be much easier to work with than a heavy one and less chance of breaking needles.
I wish yo had shown the hidden side of the finished boxing to see what the zipper termination looks like on that side

Can just ask. Why is box material in 3 pieces rather than 2? Tia
Hi and thanks for watching our video, we’ve done it like this to show how you would make a cushion where the fabric isn’t long enough to make it all the way round to meet the zip, a lot of modern sofa cushions are very large and require extensions to make it work, hope this makes sense😄

Can you please tell me what that small piece of border is for? Can you just cut 1 continuous piece of border and attach the zipper to it? Great video!
Hi and thank you for watching. The extra piece is to show how you would make a large cushion where one strip across the roll wouldn’t be long enough to go all the way around and meet the zip.
Does the zipper have to be this long? or is it enough if the length is +- 90% of the back side. Would that be enough to put in the foam?
Hi and thanks for watching. Yes it’s possible to do that and get the foam in depending on the thickness and density. You may need to vacuum the foam down if it’s a big cushion and high density rather than struggle folding it in half and risking damage to the cover.
@@premierupholstery-upholste90 thanks a lot for your help

Good day Sir, I would like to know if what kind of fabric did you use in that project?
Hello and thanks for watching. This is a faux linen from a company called Wemyss in the UK and it has fibreguard technology so it can be cleaned with just water
Bien expliqué et sublime résultat j'essaye 🙏
merci beaucoup et merci d'avoir regardé notre vidéo, en vous souhaitant le meilleur pour vos projets
This is SO helpful!! Thank you! Can you give the dimensions of the border pieces…the lengths of the zipper piece and second piece? Many thanks
Thank you and thanks for watching. We don’t have a set size for these as all cushions tend to vary in size and shape. We would usually allow about 4-5” extra for the zip around each side, possibly more for very large cushions, and if you mark this on your pattern you can then work out how long the border needs to be and if you need an extension. You may find that once you’ve made some reference marks of where the zip and border will be that you would find it beneficial to make some pieces longer,or shorter, to make the most of the fabric available. Hope this helps!
You make it so simple. I really appreciate your skills and send you my best wishes and prayers.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching 😄
