Stop Buying Puppy Pads! Build a Low-Maintenance Puppy Pen (4-Week Old Puppies)

  • After cleaning up countless poop smears and walked-through urine spots on the floor, I knew I needed a new set-up for my 4-week-old foster puppies. It needed to cut down the hours I was spending cleaning dog bodily functions, and it needed to keep them cleaner.
I changed them over to a wood pellet, puppy litter box system that restricted their space, meanwhile making sure to give them plenty of exercise time outside of the sleeping/potty pen.
I changed their space entirely, and best of all, IT WORKED! No more buying & throwing away puppy pads or scrubbing pee off the floor. This setup did the trick.
Here are links to similar supplies I purchased:
    BBQ pellets, 40lb bag: amzn.to/2AdxB2s
    Plastic under-bed storage bin: amzn.to/2RmixJO

@@LifeWithK_T The best system we ended up with was a large area closed off using two xpens connected to a crate that had a side door and a front door. That way the side door was open into the pen area and I could open the front door as necessary. Wherever the blankets were was the cleanest. They naturally pooped away from that bedding area but if I didn’t keep on top of keeping the crate clean, they pooped in the pen area too. It was a lot of trial and error adjusting how much free space they had versus potty space. Honestly it was still pretty messy. The more often I checked on it, the easier the maintenance but man was that a lot of work!

When they're very young they may have accidents in their bed but as they get a little bit older they will not use the bathroom in their own bed so it's nice that you created that for them. That will definitely help in potty training.

    • @xradelox

It won’t hurt then if they eat it but use Equine Pine Pellet Bedding like from Tractor Supply since it’s cheaper than stove pellets. And many stove pellet brands have chemicals added for burning. But the regular horse breeding won’t hurt them if they swallow some. It’ll just break down into sawdust and pass through into their poop.

But for the most part they go directly on the puppy pad. At night I keep them in a crate right next to my bed at night and I check on them every 2 hours through out the night and give them a potty break, I think for only being a month they are doing very good !! here because ive been fostering for awhile but i havent found THE perfect set up yet and i have hardwood floors that have suffered greatly. ive found that putting vinyl sheets down with a pen on top and a sheet on that with puppy pads on one designated "potty spot" and their blankets, food and water, and toys in the other area. i usually have puppies potty pad trained in a few weeks. this works well for me but i somtimes have leak problems from the puppies (usually little boys) pee off the pad or outside of the pen.

I use kitty litter. I have a 8 week Golden Retriever and a 4 year old Golden and they both only go in the 4'X4' square litter box (made out of 2X4's). Tidy Cat has a 40 lb bag and is around $8 to $10 per bag. I put a 5'X5' plastic sheet down and then pour in the Tidy Cat. At the end of the week grab the 4 corners of the plastic and drop the whole thing into the garbage.

Great idea, I have three litters all about a week apart. And they are going every where to include their food and water dishes, I can't really take them outside currently as none of them are vaccinated yet, and I have parvo pretty bad in my yard I lost I think around 10 puppies from one litter several years back and they where on my deck that I had treated with bleach, so I'm super nervous to let them out to run around, but I can't keep letting them poop and pee everywhere, because I'm at work all day and my husband works grave yard so he is asleep all day. Buying the horse bedding pellets have NO dust (compared to kitty litter) and it is so much cheaper. One 40 pound bag of horse bedding pellets can last me 4 to 6 months with two cats and two litter pans and it cost about $7!

I wanted to suggest to you to get the horse pellets instead of the wood chip pellets because the horse pellets are cheaper!! I'm forgetting what the actual name for the horse pellets is, but basically, it's used for horse bedding. It is not dangerous for the dogs to chew on the horse pellets either l I use the horse pellets when i I am fostering young kittens. Thank you for this!! We rescued a pregnant mama dog and now have 9 puppies who just turned 4 weeks today! They’re younger than yours here & are just learning how to drink milk from bowls…. Wondering about taking your pups outside - do you not have to worry about parvo in alaska? We are in Hawaii and it’s prevalent. They’re indoors (we don’t have a garage) but it’s becoming sooo messy and gross! Trying to find a better alternative. Just keep them inside and try to make a litter box area like she did in the video. It’s not worth the risk of them getting parvo. And definitely make sure they start getting their combo vaccines. They’re old enough for their first shots at 4 weeks I believe.

I’m not sure what you mean by “milk from bowls”, but please do not feed cats or dogs cow’s milk. It’s very bad for them. Keep the puppies with mom until they’re at least 8 weeks old, preferably longer if possible. She will wean them. She’ll eat the food you give her and then throw it up for them to eat. Just make sure you offer mom lots of food and the she’ll take care of the puppies.

It's better to use a portable playpen made for puppies. This rack is good for a couple weeks at this age but when they start climbing over their back legs can get stuck going over the top. Puppy pens have longer rectangles so the leg can slip out of the hole and not break their leg.

I'm looking up any type of resources to make our life easier. I'm afraid the puppies will eat the pellet or scatter them around the pen.

My foster pups did eat a few, but lost interest in eating them after the first day or two. I hope you found something! Puppies are so cute, but a real challenge to keep clean!

We are good now, all 7 puppies have been adopted, waiting on the mommy to be adopted. We also seen a family who put a few baby crates together and they only went on the pads in one section and played in the other.. To be determined. Thanks and be safe

They won't if they smell like peepee, will they? I don't know, but just asking. I'm going to get my puppy in a couple months and I'm wondering if I should do something like this in her crate? I love how she created such a nice clean space for her puppies! I wonder about using the new generation of cat litter in a plastic tub for the puppies to do all of their "business" in & put a fine mesh screen over it that could be picked up & washed off with a spray enzyme cleaner? The only problem with this would be that the solid waste wouldn't disappear through the screen that they would stand on, but the urine would. Maybe there could be 1 section to put some of the litter on top that would attract them to go "potty" on! I don't know, but it might be worth trying! Or use cedar shavings?? Would have to make sure that it isn't harmful to puppies, first though, in case they would try to chew on it!

@Marilyn: I wouldn’t use anything other than Equine Pine Pellet Bedding that’s been kiln dried to remove toxins. Tractor Supply has a 40lb bag for around $7. Don’t bother with mesh. Just have a container with low enough sides for them to step over and a broad enough space to move around in and not flip the whole thing over. Pick the poop of the top and then every few days, use a litter scoop too soft out the sawdust into the trash and then throw the pellets left in the scoop back in with the others. Easy peasy.

So I'm fostering puppies right now and I've been instructed to not let the puppies touch the ground bc the parvovirus lives in dirt and it's extremely deadly. How did you find out it was ok for them to play outside?

Me too! I got nervous just HEARING that her pups were outside being that little. I am also fostering 7 week old pups (they were 4 weeks when I got them).

If you haven't had a sick puppy in your back yard in 3 years it's probably ok for them to go out there.

No parvovirus can live and stay infectious in the dirt or on other porus surfaces that have not been thuroughly disinfected multiple times for up to 6 years after a dog that had it peed puked or pooped there unfortunately with parvo there is nothing but fluids coming out until their gone so it is really hard to feel safe with your puppy(ies) outside

Hello . Quick questions. I am weaning my pups out right now. They haven’t had a solid stool for one week and they are almost 5 weeks. I want to try your idea but how did you get your pups to have a solid stool ?

    • @PoodleParti
      @PoodleParti 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Does that mean they have loose stool? They need to be wormed.

Been there - I feel for you! You could definitely try. You'd just need to find a smaller bin for the pellets, so they could step in.

I tried this once - just recently - and puppies ate the pellets. One puppy was very sick and I had to run him to the vet hospital. Puppies eat everything - so this isn't any different than anything else on the floor.

Mh. A You shouldnt even get a puppy before its 8 weeks old at least. 4 weeks is too young to seperate it from its mother.
My pup is 6 months old and still cries when left alone. It depends on the breed and its attachment to you.
