My Apartment Dog Masters in Indoor and Outdoor Potty Training

  • We got Olive when she was 8 wks. Living in a city where rain falls almost half the year and a high rise building made it difficult to go out to potty each time. In order to avoid the frequency and for the flexibility we potty trained Olive both indoor and outdoor.

      and god forbid my dog learned outdoor training before indoor training. absolute nightmare to find out how to train my dog who refuses to go inside.

      @@podpathpro We trained ours to go indoor as a puppy. Once he got old enough, we started going outside. Now, 8 yrs old, he just gets it and goes in the apt and outside. We live in a 14 story high-rise in NYC but are moving to FL. When we've visited, he pees/poops outside 100% of the time. We now have to retrain him to go indoors as well. He hates rain so in FL, its important that he goes both in/out.

      @@isaacvega8310 I had easy access outdoors and housetrained right away, completely circumventing pads. puppy is now 9 months old and I'm on the 12th floor of a highrise in the GTA. Trying to train her to go indoors, but she refuses the pads. I'm trying a farm fresh grass service and will try a litter box as my last resort. made the mistake of not restricting freedom, but the unit is a 600sq ft box as it is. She's great at holding it in 4-5 hour windows and overnight, but will pee if suddenly excited. Just started snowing and she hates the rain too, so it's important I give her the option as she's a short-haired dog and gets cold easily. thanks for sharing!

      heyyy!! im french and i live in an apartment in Paris. I hesitated for weeks on whether i should train my puppy to go indoor first or outdoor first. Like ive always heard that its wasnt a good idea to potty train with pee pads, because the puppy will get used to do it indoor. So im very confused (as a non experiment first dog owner). Can you advise me? Thank you so much !@@isaacvega8310

    I am soooo happy with my stray dog
    At the beginning I thought he will never learn,but from the beginning he slept all night long,and now we have a routine.
    We go out at about 7 first time.
    He always slept the whole night, which is for me very important.
    He really is clever.and learns fast ,I am 76 and very happy that I found him.they left him in a dicth, and he is now the first class dog .I thank yu God every day for him

    Tip: as soon as they squat to go? Pick them up and set them where theyre supposed to go, and then treat. If you let them finish theyll think its ok and (as she said) itll take longer. No need to yell or punish them but soon as mine would squat to go? Id pick him right up and set him on the pad....he picked it up really fast and now he'll go all by himself

    My rough collie went through the same process. It takes time, but they get there. I actually trained my dog to rig a bell to let me know he needs to go to the bathroom. It works great until he started to wake me up a 3AM and all other hours of the day. Because he figured out that ringing the bell also meant letting out to the yard.

    This is a fantastic video! We find the grass pad turned into a bed, the fake grass needed to be thrown away and smelled horrible, and we are currently using pee pads on litter boxes but often having misses. We may just go to the litter. What brand did you say you like? How is it going now?

    My puppy had been newspaper trained.
    Owner said just spread newspapers over entire area where puppy was going to be kept, then gradually overtime begin removing newspapers until one is left.
    It worked so well ...that if anyone would place unread newspaper on floor for a minute pup would wet it😁

      That's not house training is it, it's the equivalent of vaping. As soon as you see it peeing then stop it shouting NO! & immediately take it outside until she pees & say lots of good dog, petting & a wee treat. The dog will soon learn & each time ONE small treat.

      @ Yan Luo hi there it is not unusual for a dog or a puppy raised one while to pee as that's what boy dog or puppy does Wells they are peeing. As you will find a female dog or puppy pees when they are sitting sitting down or squatting.

    Thank you for this video! I'm adopting a 3 month old pup and would like to know which litter is working best for you. My previous dog only used potty pads when we weren't able to get outside, but they took up lots of floor space in my laundry room because I spread them out for her. If I can train my new pup to go in 9ne spot, that would be ideal. Thanks again!

    This is the way I recently potty trained my Chihuahua. I litter trained it, as opposed to letting it go outside, and it was by far the easiest and the best method I have ever used.
    So what I did was purchase a 24 X 18 wire doggy crate and put a doggy bed, a doggy blanket, and some doggy toys inside it.
    At the same time, I also purchased a 24 X 18 solid plastic container with high sides that I customized into my new doggy litter box by using a hack saw to cut out an opening on one side of the container large enough so a Chihuahua can enter and exit it easily. Then I added an inch layer of pine pellets to the floor as the litter material.
    Next, with the Chihuahua puppy inside the doggy crate I butted the doggy crate opening to the doggy litter box opening. As the idea was that the Chihuahua puppy would sleep and play in the doggy crate but when it needed to eliminate, it would eliminate in the doggy litter box. Guess what, it worked like a charm.
    So for the first three weeks, I kept this up only letting the Chihuahua puppy out to bond and play after I saw that it had very recently eliminated.
    Then after three weeks, I slid the doggy litter box out about a foot and a half away from the doggy crate. Then I monitored my new puppy closely throughout the day to see if she was using the doggy litter box like she was supposed to, and she did flawlessly.
    Then subsequently, I slid the doggy litter box on each successive day a little closer and closer to the final designated location for the doggy litter box I had previously picked out. When the litter box was in its final designated location, I then considered my new puppy fully potty trained.
    In any event, this was not only by far the easiest time I ever had potty training a Chihuahua puppy, but it was the first time I ever trained a Chihuahua puppy without having any puppy mistakes.
    Moreover, a litter box, as far as I'm concerned, is not only the easiest way to train your pet because your pet essentially trains itself, but overall it's the best solution as well. As I don't have to worry about maintaining a set schedule to let my puppy out. I don't have to worry about whether it is snowing or raining outside or if it is freezing or too hot. I also don't have to worry about leaving the puppy alone for an extended time period. I also don't have to worry about fleas, ticks, mosquitos, or my dog getting a disease another dog left behind. I also don't have to worry about other dogs attacking tiny Chihuahua since she always remains inside the home.
    As far as the litter material goes, I highly recommend pine pellets because it virtually eliminates all odors and it is quite easy to work with. It's also far cheaper than other kinds of litter materials and does a far better job at eliminating odors. As you can buy a 40 pound bag of the stuff at Tractor Supply Company for $6.79 plus tax and you will use only about two to maybe three bags a year. Meanwhile, when a dog or cat urinates on the pellets, the pellets disintegrate into odorless saw dust.
    To make cleaning my doggy litter box easy, I purchased a sifting cat litter box as a cleaning aid only. So what I do to clean the litter box since I always flush down the toilet any solids as soon as I see them, is empty the doggy litter box in the sifter of the cat litter box. Then I sift the sawdust in the sifter into the cat litter box below. When all that remains in the sifter is pine pellets, I then empty the sifter back into my doggy litter box and then add about a scoop to a scoop and a half of pine pellets to make up for what was used. Then I empty the sawdust in the cat litter box from below the sifter into the trash since it is odorless. Lastly, I wipe everything down and put everything up until the next time. As I clean my doggy litter box out about once a week.
    By the way, pee pads are not only expensive, but they are also very disgusting.

    My Golden Retriever puppy didn’t catch the idea of pads before he started to chew them and play with them, so it wasn’t possible anymore to teach him to potty only at these places where pads are. He also haven’t got any pattern where he usually pee, so it was a tough one. The only way was to frequently go outside day and night. At 4 months it’s not a problem anymore.

    quick question, my puppy master the pee on a pad thing when he was 3 months old. But things gone wild after he under my parents control (because I went to the office quite often these days)
    now, even if I gave him the pad, he would destroy it... he frequently went outside for walkies, but still some accident happen during nightime.. any tips for this?

    • @OliveJoa
      @OliveJoa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We're no experts but some dogs master potty training by 3mo and can still have accidents occasionally~couple reasons he could be doing this is that he's till a wee pup and anything that's easy to carry he will see as a toy and "destroy" of boredom- 3mo he sure must have lots of puppy energy to release! There are pee pad holders that will keep the pad in place and keep your pup from taking it apart~🐾😀

    • @OliveJoa
      @OliveJoa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello!👋 cat litter is different from dog litter as it's made of diff ingredients, please use dog litter. As mentioned in the video and link in description, we Purina Secondnature brand dog litter, they say it is non-toxic and not harmful if ingested. Your dog may try to ingest some of the litter to investigate just as some puppies ear their poop out of curiosity when they're young. 🐾

I have a 80lbs black lab who will make an absolute mess of the pads if I use pads for the new puppy and god forbid if she started trying to use the pads too 😖😵‍💫 at least with the box it’ll be way too small for her to even think about trying it or so I hope and pray 🙏🏾😅

    Do u think it’s too late to train my one year old dog on dog litter box? Or should I just buy a grass litter? She did fine when she was younger on pee pad but my kids didn’t keep up with it. So he has many accidents in the house. I had to retrain her… she’ll go outside for #1 but not #2… past few weeks, she been lazy too not wanted to go outside.

      Never too late to retrain for going potty~ grass or litter they are both wonderful to train and 1 yr is not old~they both have their own pros and cons depending on your preference I'd recommend researching which one you'd prefer for your dog and which u think would be more suitable with his lifestyle🤗

    I tried the litter box, I can't keep my cavapoo-puppies-for-sale from trying to eat it. Was this a problem for you?

    • @OliveJoa
      @OliveJoa  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Olive used to try eating them in the beginning, likely bc she was a puppy and puppies are curious about everything so put anything in their mouths. She was old enough to know the word 'no' though and when we see this behavior would tell her 'no' and she'd stop doing it. She eventually lost interest. Not sure what dog litter you've been using but if using secondnature(see description)which is what we use, it's made of recycled newspaper and wood pulp which is said to be non harmful to dogs if eaten tho of course not recommmended to b eaten.

    Hope you can help us. Our Cavapoo was doing well with litter training. Unfortunately now she having accidents and eats the litter. We are also using second nature. We are extremely frustrated.

    • @OliveJoa
      @OliveJoa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and thanks for reaching out! We're not experts but from our own experience- how old is your dog? Usually puppies tend to eat their poop or in this case litter bc they're curious or something new to play with orrr due to environmental stress or behavioral triggers. For olive since we introduced her to dog litter when she was a pup it was curiosity and being too playful but she quickly dropped the habit when she learned the word 'no' and she had "other" toys to keep her occupied. If you're worried about the litter itself unlike cat litter, second nature litter is made of recycled newspaper and wood pulp and said to be harmless if a dog ate it. (-still I wouldn't just totally ignore the behavior either). Hope this helps🐾

    I have 2 cats and thinking of a puppy and I think they’re probably r gonna use the dogs box too , do you think that the dog may not use it because of the cats?

    • @OliveJoa
      @OliveJoa  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The litter box the dog can for sure use just remember to rinse it well before letting the dog use it. But no on if you're planning to use the same cat litter on the dog. Cat litter is said to be toxic for dogs so u should keep your dog away from cat litter and use dog litter for your dog.🐾

      For indoor potty training we began with a enclosed small area so she doesn't have an expansive room to pee on. If interested to train indoors perhaps try putting gates in a small space so when he usually goes potty(e.g after meals) he doesn't miss the pad?🤔
