What is so fantastic about this entire video is the fact that Mr. Menard's musicians are young folks. Young folks to keep the values and traditions of South Louisiane going!!
I am of Acadian descent from Canada. The Cajuns are our cousins. D.L. Menard's 'Back Door' sounds so much like Acadian music. All the same musical instruments are used. August 15 is the Acadian National Festival. The Cajuns are just as much a part of it.
This gives me chills! These guys are so young but super talented! It's obvious DL is having a great time. Let's all pray these youngsters carry on the rich tradition of the finest music of all.
J'aime ca beaucoup! Il y a quelques annees j'ai habite a Pierre Part, Louisiana et j'ecoutais souvent a cette musique. La Louisiane et ces gens me manquent beaucoup! Merci bien, mes amis!
Went to Mr. Menard's house in 1992 or so to interview him for a project on Louisiana history. He was very kind, and sang for us live in his living room!
Génial mon ami .. que la vie te sois douce !!! Le bonjour de l ile de la réunion .. océan indien et .. francaise!!! Et ici des menards il y en partout. Un nom français .. salut d un cousin
As an old (73+) man from Texarkana, my kinship with La. runs deep. As it does for Tx., Ar., & Ok. Watch the singers. They play because of love & family, and love of life. America can learn by watching Cajun Music & and how to live a full life. Does DL look like he's ready to slow down and find a rocking chair? LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!
The younger people are the Reese family and there's more of them this band isn't together anymore the bass player and fiddle player are both married and the guitar player and drummer plays with the 6 younger members of the Reese Family they all sing and play multiple instruments the youngest Molly is 13 there are 2 adopted a brother and sister.
@@peggygibbons479 I'd like to know WHERE in Erath this is. Like to visit the barn before it's torn down. Progress, you know. Anybody know the location?
Haha agreed! Not just bc I’m a Cajun myself but my pawpaw “Belizaire” who barely spoke English was close friends with Menard and the back door was his all time favorite song! It was on the radio constantly growing up!
Just superb. I can't listen enough. I grew up Cajun, because mom was. Spoke French until she was 9. Grew up listening to it all, especially Aldus Roger. I had the honor of meeting DL, and so did mom. They spoke Cajun to each other for about 1/2 hour. A really, really, really class act.
Doris Leon "D.L." Menard (1932-2017) was a legend of Cajun Music. This rendition of his trademark two-step song is quintessential, because it shows how he passed on his music with heart and soul to the generation of grandchildren. Just look at how capable, but humble the young musicians play up to him. It is as if they felt, that even this giant would not cast his shadow on the Earth forever.
In January 1992, when my first grandchild was born, I went out to Erath and got a rocking chair from D.L. so the baby's mama could rock when she nursed. A great experience with a great musician.
Cajun singers have a damn unique voice. I can't get enough, how come in Mexico we didn't have this!!!!!! sound like we could probably collaborate on something.
There are a fair number of Hispanic people here from the colonists in the 1700-1800s as well as the recent immigrants from Central America. I would like to hear a Cajun-Norteña fusion band
Oh Man, I just love this!! Playing outside is not so easy but DL & Company do a Great job on this Classic. I could listen to this days non - Stop!!! I love it!!! ❤❤❤😂😅
Thank you Mr. Menard my momma's favorite song was rainbow at midnight and I know she would love this song also. She's where the French side of me comes in Thank you for sharing your gift song
I had the privilege of seeing DL in Chapel Hill, NC in around 1988; I had lived in Baton Rouge but had never heard of DL Menard...I was blown away and this video took me right back there . Thanks for posting this.
This is AWESOME music, and I love this guy. Cant understand a damned thing he saying, but that's what makes the Cajuns so unique, keeps mystery in the world. Greetings from the swamps of the Eastern Shore of Maryland!!!!
I had the pleasure of meeting this man before he died. I was young, no older than 15 or 16, so i guess i didn't realize how amazing that was. Looking back though, I wish i had talked to him more, because I would have been so interested to hear what he had to say
RIP, DL. One of the great musicians and great men of Acadiana. Just heard the news of his passing, and there's a hole in my heart (but a DL chair in my living room, so I'll never forget him)>
I like this a lot! A number of years ago i lived in Pierre Part, Louisiana and I often listened to Cajun music. I miss this area and the people very much! Thanks!
View this regularly. Gosh, I miss D.L. He appeared live regularly on Lafayette TV in the early morning hours back in the 1980's. Certainly miss Erath, Delcambre, Abbeville, and most of all, Forked Island. Sadly, stuck up here in North Alabama...
AWESOME. DL Looks VERY good still and as always is a true showman and a perfect gentleman. Still plays tight and his voice is still strong. And the rest of your band is just as tight and sound GREAT. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for the note. This is the third year we have played in D.L.'s backyard but the first time I recorded all the tracks. It's a great sounding space! I'm thinking we might do a 3 camera HD shoot sometime soon. Bearcat745
Had an uncle, Milton Touchet, who died in '08 and after his wake and his Catholic mass we gathered in the cemetery of the Catholic church in Erath, La for his burial. I never experienced this before but a man sang a French song for my uncle at his casket. Didn't know the words of the song since I don't speak French but I later learned that the man who sang the French song was the one & only D. L. Menard. Obviously they both knew each other and it was a great honor for my uncle to be sang a song at his burial by the great Cajun musician D. L. Menard.
+cajun1957 That, indeed, was a good send off for your uncle. Sadly, that hardly happens anymore. When the vieux et vieilles go, their ways go with them.
@nInAg114 sadly you are right about the ways leaving us. I remember back in the 90’s they were “teaching French” but Cajun french and Parisian french are pretty different. When they punished kids in schools for speaking it they effectively killed it off. Sad but true.
Thank you, Mark, (Cajun Guru), for introducing me to your Great Uncle's melodious songwriting! Truly special and unique! I appreciate your diligence in bringing this piece of Cajun culture to my attention. Wishing you great success with your Food Truck business. Great concept, bringing authentic Cajun Food to Kentucky with your Cravin' Cajun!!! Blessings! ...
We in Sulphur la still have that heritage in us. We can't escape it and I tried but I am what I am. A cajun with Ravia and Bertrand blood from Lake Arthur and transplanted in Sw. Louisiana

I traveled around the USA in 1982 for a year, and the nicest warmest people I met were in Louisiana and Mississippi. Kiaora from Aotearoa New Zealand.

The best Cajun song of all time !!! 🤘
