  • DL Menard sings at Lake Peigneur with the Rees Family Band L'Angelus (July 2005)
Kermit Bouillion regrets that the video is a little shaky and wishes he had brought a tripod to support his VHS camera. The audio is excellent and so were the musicians.
This was totally un-planned and un-rehearsed. A few friends of the museum were invited to attend a Jam Session at the lake, and we are fortunate to have this video of the great D.L. Menard with young musicians of the Rees family who now perform professionally in Nashville.
Lake Peigneur is about 20 miles south of Lafayette, LA.

DL Menard was such a great man. I met him several times and he loved to talk to people after he was through playing. I love his songs and his great generosity and personality. He was one of a kind!

DL Menard was the King of Cajun Music even though I like Doug Kershaw & Jo El Sonnier! I enjoy any thing by DL. He is sorely missed!!

Just fabulous, this music - can't get enough. One of L'Angélus's earliest gigs, and such an honor to play along with D.L. A techie question - that pickup on the accordion looks remarkably like an aluminum beer can - could it be? A great invention, like Dylan's coat-hanger harp rack.

Amazing show. I’m so sad I just discovered DL Menard and found out he passed away in 2017. Amazing vocalist in Cajun French! May his songs live on and echo from the Bayou all the way to Benin!

Fell in love with Louisiana when I first heard Bois Sec Ardroin many years ago; the families of Louisiana are amazing and truly what America is all about, a melting pot of cultures who share the best of their culture with each other and the world.
So wonderful to dance and sing with Cajun, Creole and Zydeco music on the porch, in the moon light or a bar room.
I wish you happiness and love through out your life.

J'adore !

I heard is music most my life, loved his traditional style. I was lucky enough to meet him after I got my mail at the Erath Post Office, he was shootin the bull with another guy, and me being a prankster, I walked up and asked "Is this the bullshit station?" he said yea, join in!, and I did, and I had him and the other guy laughing and they had me laughing. I offered to give him a hand, he said I'm retarded, I don't work no mo. I held up my crippled arm, and said, "No this one...and it's tattooed, "Out of Order" lol He laughed so hard tears come to his eyes, he said "Capt Crip, you gots plenty humor and enjoy makin fun of yourself, you'r gonna go a longs way" I said, yup, can you believe the Coast Guard gave me a license to drive dem big boats in Intracoastal City? AND A company in Lafayette gave me the boats to operate, dey gots lotsa stupid people in dis world" I had him laughing till his sides hurt.......I miss old people like him, and now I'm old, lol He's known and loved all over the world.

I forgot....the term Whipper Snapper was from around 1580s, a young man with nothing to do would walk the streets practicing snapping his whip, started calling them "snipper snappers" and eventually by the 1700s the term was "Whipper Snapper" And to this day means "a boy who has nothing to do" and when said by an older person, it's an enduring joke.

Actually it changed to mean a youth with an excess of ambition and impudence.
Growing up in the Northeast in the 60's that is what it always meant when adults would use it when referring to us youngsters back then.
